In which Rowdy and Chris fix work done to the Polson 70 by the last operators of the railroad. Be warned, opinions abound. Rowdy also gets Sir David Attenborough's name wrong, which he will be firmly reprimanded for with a formal written warning.
We’re a nonprofit organization and despite our irreverent tone, we are passionate about heritage rail preservation, economic development and especially - Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. Check out more about our nonprofit at wfim.org and support us on Patreon at / mtrainerrail

Sell the parts in the gift shop... I've watched foamers buy that crap. $100+ a pop. Do it. Also... preach. I know exactly what you guys are dealing with with the delivery lines... We oughta have a beer sometime. :)

Absolutely loving your channel, In the 90's I was following a lot of the logging railway museums, (Usually via trains and railpace) Your RR was always a favorite to see articles on and when new geared locomotives came back on line. so great to see that you guys have brought it back. Keep up the good work!

Having spent countless days lapping valves, I prefer bonnet valves. I will say that the quality of valves in todays world is less than stellar. Copper injector steam and delivery lines are definitely the way to go!

You joke about selling clapped out parts, but people buy them! Guarantee you - put them in the giftshop and they'll sell. The EBT was selling old stays, foot boards made into clocks, and even cinders last time I was there. May have bought the clock 😅

Ahhh, doing it twice makes it twice as nice. There's nothing worse than fixing something that...yea, you covered that pretty well. Unfortunately it's a typical story in not just heritage railroading. Oh, thanks for the driving video. We may never make it that far west from New Hampshire. You live in some pretty County.

Maybe I missed you explaining it, but when you say "steam cutting" are you saying the uneveness in the gasket are letting pinhole leaks of steam start cutting into valve? I'm familiar with diesel exhaust doing a similar thing, eroding away the manifolds if you ignore an exhaust leak for a very long time. I love these mechanical videos and hope you continue to make them with a lot of mechanical detail!
@gregorycross612

Yep, same as exhaust. A leakage path becomes an erosion path.

hmm sounds like a real mess, unlike materials are less then ideal on things just trying to souder or weld let alone trying to keep leaks from happening, though bronze and copper are expensive but if you want it to work right you got to do it right. as for lapping valves yea the big ones can really be a thorn I seen it done once and I was getting ready to leave but its got to be done if you want it to fit perfectly. and many say older brass and copper castings are far better, but noo we got to outsource everyting, no one is willing to do the dirty foundry work even if we have a place to cast it here, and do it as quick and dirty as you can got to pump out the volume as time is money in the west and quality control just isn't what it was especially for garden hose spigots and valves I heard a few people say.
