Having to redo the work we did last week was super annoying😅…timelapses and the magic of KZbin definitely make it look easy, but all that shovelling and raking is a serious workout! In the end, we’re glad things worked out the way they did. It’s a much better set-up and more future proof. We kinda wish we got more done and could give a nice reveal with the heaters and everything up and running but honestly, it’s just not the reality. We talked about it a bit towards the end of the video but it’s a tough time of year where rest and down time is so important. If you're reading this I'm talking to YOU...show yourself some kindness this week and do something just for you that makes you feel special. Sending all our love until next Sunday xo 💛

Hey Dudes.....I'm Baaaaack Don't feel cheap Todd, taking a bath in the Rubbermaid tub was just a progression to the present...you two are amazing.....You've come a long way 'n yer hard work shows in 'yer beautiful homestead....Is that 'yer new John Deere 3039? I got one of those too with a cab, bucket 'n mower 'fer field grass management, no backhoe ....yet....LoL And...going Green is commendable, but, You need a reliable Hydrocarbon based backup system....I have a 25Kw Generac backup generator with automatic disconnect and self start when grid power fails....Yer project looks good, I'm so pleased that 'yer plan is finally coming together....God Bless.

We enjoy watching the problem-solving, and to be honest, the mistakes are where we learn, so having that in there really makes your videos the ONLY videos I make sure to watch every week. My first thought when you said you were exhausted was “oh, I feel exhausted just watching you.” Well that’s total BS because I’m sitting around reading your posts while you are hard at work. I CANNOT imagine how you must feel by the time the sun sets. Every day you guys work like dogs! God bless you! I can’t believe what you’ve taken on. I’m so impressed. I hope you know we are all out here pulling for you. BTW, I love “the boys” and Squirrel. Sorry to tell you that one of my daughter’s cats is at least 12 years old and she still gets in the tree. Makes for adorable pictures but it’s hard watching your favorite ornaments shattered on the floor. Best idea, no matter how tacky, is to use styrofoam ornaments in the cat hot spots or at least on the bottom branches. Helps with kitties who want to bat the ornaments around and wagging doggo tails. If you’ve hung in there to read this post, again, I wish you all the best. ♥️

What I really like about Tyler and Todd is they are real world. This isn't some bare bones "off the grid" shed that a person could live in for about three days to a week under tough conditions. This is a modern four seasons year round home in the wood that they are creating. That involves a LOT.

The one thing I love about the colder weather is spending more quality time inside with family, a good warm fire, and a homemade meal to share. Good Stories are always told. The shorter days can take their toll. SAD ~Seasonal Affective Disorder plagues a lot of our population; especially in the northern places. I'm from Northeastern NY State (Lake Placid, NY area). So your weather is similar to where I live. We live in the coldest town in the US. It can be difficult in the winter months. But the views are breathtaking year round. I've always loved that 💞 Great video guys 😍 I got a chuckle about you saying that your kitty hasn't learned any respect with your tree ornaments. Most of them don't have any holiday tree etiquette 😂 I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones bc my kitty, Sophi pretty much leaves the tree & ornaments alone 🐈 And for being a lover of tree climbing, she resists that urge as well. Happy holidays to you and the animals 💗🎄⛄🦌🎅 PS: You've gotta build some snowmen & decorate them, make some snow angels, go ice skating on your pond 😜 PPS: We have the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival every winter. We have a real ice palace, and a entire couple weeks of winter fun. It was started over 100 years ago to break up the monotony of the long, cold, dark winter months. And has continued on as a yearly tradition. They even pick a Royal Court, with a king, queen, prince, princess, and court. Google it please... Be neat if you guys came up with your own version of outdoor winter traditions for your show. You've got beautiful land to come up with something small, yet festive, and fun ❤️

For Squirrel and the tree, hang a couple strings of bells underneath the lowest branches, all around the tree, or wherever you have the greatest concern. When Squirrel starts playing, reach in and give the strings a shake to make the bells ring. This has worked for us, and we have never had a cat/tree misadventure. As far as your daily activity cycle is concerned, I'm pretty convinced that I'm part bear because come late fall, and into winter, my activity drops way off, and I feel like 'denning up'. We are, after all animals, and mammals, so we are of this planet, and its nature, so we are going to respond to our hard-wired instincts. Who knows, it might be a reaction to less intense light. I have friends from northern (and southern) climates who swear that the stay inside all winter and only do home cottage work. Things like turning wool into threads and dying them, to then weave cloth, or flax into linen, tending greenhouses, and growing cabbages and mushrooms. You guys have decades to go before you are 'old', and until you make the final decision on where you are going to 'retire'. That's a lot of living before, and after that too, and you will have plenty of opportunity to maintain your health, improve your modern off-grid homesteading, or decide it's time to go build a big huge treehouse in the islands of Malaysia, Micronesia, Polynesia, etc., and fight the monkeys for snacks from your hammocks. ;-) Be well, happy, and at peace!

I have an off grid home in Arizona which is way easier climate to do and off grid house. But when I watch you two putting in redundant systems to keep the place alive I shake my head as I made all the mistakes one can make and the big one was a back up propane generator (a Generac 7KW) auto start. That dam thing would never start as the battery or control unit was faulty and of course the battery would go dead just sitting. Replaced every circuit board countless battery's voltage regulators and in a short time the stator failed which at that point it was cheaper to buy another new one. I had a cheap Coleman i ran for weeks non stop when my charge controller failed, but had to gas it up every 2 hours, then on to a propane 3000 watt Honda which was the best of the generators. Last summer we hit a 126 degrees and I had to get the Honda fired up to run additional AC to keep the house cool. About every hour the Honda would quit and I would have to go out and restart it. It finally dawned on me it was just too hot and the heat was causing the Honda to fail. So went to Lowes and bought a water misting system to keep the Honda cool enough to keep it running. Even the battery on the Honda failed in less than a year so now I need to buy a new battery for it. Moral of the story, generators are junk and will never fire up and run when you need them. And who wants to be working on a generator when it is a 126 or -10 A portable Honda is the best but I would have a charger to plug in to a portable Honda that is kept inside and warm in the winter just to charge your batteries. My buddy next door had to stay here during covid and decided to do the generator route to keep his house in AC for the summer and he burned up 3 Westinghouse generators and the 2- 8000 watt Honda's he bought the engines blew up all in one summer.

I made the huge mistake of replacing the plumbing in my cabin and NOT using pex plumbing pipe and then the winter ice blizzard hit here in Texas and broke the newly installed pvc pipes. Use pex plumbing so your pipes do not break when they freeze. My house in Austin has pex plumbing and thus they did not break when they froze for a few days. It was invented by the manufactured home industry here in America about 20 years ago and it its cost is very competitive and easy to install. Other than that propane is the way to go and hooking it up to the generator is a great idea. It is also great to cook with if you would like to use a gas cooktop. You could also use it for the oven, water heater and clothes dryer. Yes, placing the tank by the driveway is always the best for easy access and I think they last quite a bit longer than 10 years. You will get all of this figured out one of these days. Cant wait till that huge pond out back freezes so you can skate on it or maybe even play some ice hockey. Thanks!!!!

I’m glad that things are working out and you’re making good progress. Sometimes “mistakes “ are actually opportunities to do things a better way and try something new. Even professional builders have to stop and rethink things especially when Mother Earth has different ideas and plans. Plus with the help of Mel, who has been such a blessing to you, and the various professionals you have been working with are usually good at telling or showing you ways to get things done properly and many times it saves you money and headaches down the road. My Dad was an amazing man who could trouble shoot most things and make repairs or install and build almost anything. He made sure that all of his 8 children helped and learned how to do so many things which has come in handy so many times throughout my life. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 92. I miss both of my parents greatly as we lost Mom in 2011. She was like Dad and could tackle most things. She died shortly before I discovered that I had breast cancer which I thankfully found very early, but I was already dealing with spinal cord injuries and was scheduled for 2 major spinal surgeries to be done back to back in a 10 hour surgery as I was dealing with losing the feeling in parts of my body, severe chronic nerve pain and was at risk of becoming permanently paralyzed if I didn’t have surgery asap. There were some major complications and I am lucky to be alive and cancer free. I could definitely use my Dad’s skills right now because our furnace has suddenly stopped working and today our water heater stopped working and my husband was never taught how to do anything that is needed when you own a home and my disabilities make it so I can’t go in the basement let alone try to fix either one.

This week the sun rises after 11am and sets before 4pm. But we're passing the winter solstice so now the days start getting longer!! It was also -40 here today. I was glad to have the day off! But this is part of being a Yukoner. Part of being Canadian.

Lots of hard work again boys. Proud of you for persevering. LoL Lillith! It's funny, I have had cats my whole life, like over time 14 diff cats, and none of them climbed our xmas trees, nor caused issues. Our dog ate our angel once before we could put her on lol. We have a young kitty now that swiped at one ornament a couple times, but we said no & she has never gone back. Not sure why we have been so lucky.

I literally laughed out loud when you were talking about your cat attacking your 🎄! “I thought she would have outgrown it since last year.” I laughed and thought, “oh, poor deluded boy, lol!” Next year, when you are in your container home, wire the top of it and attach it to the ceiling, this will keep it standing tall. Secondly, only put wooden or un breakable ornaments on the bottom tiers. Love your videos! Warm hugs from Florida

I was wondering if you have made a map of your property to show where all your underground cables and pipes are and how deep they are. It's amazing how when the years go by you forget exactly where they are. Speaking from experience and digging over my gas line and punctured it. Major bummer and expense to fix it. I love your property and your decor and attention to detail is beautiful.

Progress isn't always pretty (or linear), and can be so frustrating to take 1 step forward and 2 steps back, but you guys are killing it, and I hope you get a much needed rest after all your hard work.

every single emergency backup measure you’re putting in place is nice, but i think the thing that will truly save you in the hard times is the amazing way you support each other, and the way you almost always find a bigger perspective of how things are continually turning out for the best for you. This is your most valuable asset always, and no matter what material thing you put in place on the land, it won’t hold a candle to that. one of my favorite parts of watching these videos is seeing that you constantly come back to that remembrance. so cheers to you and merry Christmas!!

I agree, you guys should write something up about what you have been doing and sell it online in segments. Create segmented explanations of specified things you did, for example; setting up the solar panels, batteries and electrical wiring for your dome house.

You guys are amazing. I bought my place with all the energy needs in place and your work through your videos gives me a new reverence for all that was done for me here so that I can appreciate the solitude, the views, and the pure joy of living day to day in such natural beauty. I love how your work inspires this 70 year old woman to feel gratitude deep in my soul. Thank you for your youthful enthusiasm and physical ability to create your world, your way!

I still think that you can build an enclosed stairway on the side of the container to the roof and either have more space on the main floor without the spiral staircase or use it as a bookcase/plant stand if you love it.

We have had our 500 LB tank for 30 years and it’s been just fine. They last a lot longer than the 10 years unless it’s different when you guys get snow. We live in the desert.🤷🏼‍♀️ from what we have learned composite and aluminum tanks last even longer than 30 years. Don’t let them tell you 10 years it’s a way to make money off people. As long as the integrity of the tank is good and there’s no leaks it should last for a lot longer than 10 years. My brother works for suburban propane here in the states and that’s what he just told me❤

I am always so excited to see when you guys post. It's coming together, and how happy for you we all are! One step at a time and roll with the punches is the best way to view anything to do with home renovations. You both do that with such grace and a sense of humor. It's the right way, otherwise you'll make yourselves crazy.
