I am subscribed to a plethora of sailing channels and you are the only one to talk about the pencil zinc... thank you! I didn't even know about those... my sailing is done on lakes right now so not much electrolysis issues, but I am hoping by this time next year to try my hand at shore cruising in the gulf of mexico; I need all the education I can get! Also, I really like the life vests you have put together for the two of you... I'm going back and trying to identify everything you included on your vests. Thanks for sharing these videos!

I would also like to re state David Russell, its the first time I've heard of pencil zincs . . . . THANKS FOLKS ! PS. you know its not just that Randall mentioned them, but he did touch on NOBLE metals and its just exactly the right information you'd expect from a actual course on the subject. cool beans !

I too just bought a boat that was kept in fresh water. I did some research on zincs in fresh water and was surprised to find that they can waste faster in fresh water. I brought my boat back to salt after nearly three years in fresh and all the zincs were gone. Gone. There was not much left of the pencil zinc either even though it was only idled every few months while there. That was the Fraser river.

Turtle dudes, I too am a turtle, and my engine also wears a diaper because the transmission is not potty trained. You both kick ass and I appreciate you sharing your ancient turtle wisdom.

Randal, have you ever considered converting to an electric motor? If so please let me know your thoughts.
@SailingTurtle6 жыл бұрын
Pete Nauth, thank you so much for leaving us a comment. I’ve been on sailboats with electric motors and I’m typically not impressed....Since our diesel engine still runs like a new sewing machine, I would never consider replacing it. It has worked beautifully for us and also offers charging capabilities. It is so efficient that fuel consumption is a total non issue. We typically use 2 tanks of fuel per year. If I were to re-power our boat, and the boat were to be used primarily for day sailing, electric would be a great option, because I can recharge at the dock effectively. However if I were cruising there isn't enough space on deck for sufficient solar charging to keep up with the electric propulsion demands. Consider your effective range under power into a headwind with chop using electric propulsion, could you motor in these conditions continuously for 3 days without needing a generator? If you need a generator you might as well have an engine. Thanks again for leaving us a comment and for watching our videos. We really appreciate you being part of our journey!
