Did the Knock Off Carb have the same power as a stock OEM carb when it was under load on your boat? Was it from Amazon?

Hi. I noticed no drop in power due to the new carb. It is a little cruder on the outside but seems to work just fine.

Was it the flywheel slipping that made you think the timing was off? I am about to disassemble and rebuild my Tohatsu M9.8B power head (bad piston needle bearing) and I'm not sure if I need to adjust the timing afterwards. I have the service manual but honestly I don't understand the adjustment procedure described.

Hi. Well in retrospect I think you shouldn’t have to mess with the timing if you can disassemble and put it all back in same position. Use a marking pen or fingernail polish before taking apart to mark how everything lines up! These engines are SO worth fixing!

Marking is a good idea. I'll be doing that. I have taken a lot of pictures but I think I'll take some more showing how everything looks with different throttle settings.

It looks like you re-used the old damaged engine base gasket. I don't think it will run for long.

I thing the better way to put piston into the block is u just release the connecting rod from the crank shaft

where did u buy the new carb?

Hi at the end when you get her running, she sounds a bit rough, could it be that the connecting rod bearings are not the best anymore ? She sounds a bit like a two stroke engine that has been submerged in seawater and not being cleaned up and desalinated immediately... Did you check for any play in these bearings ? It could be, the sound is just KZbin and compression... Matthias, with my Freyia 2 at Samos at the moment

Matthias, yes we shall see if these camshaft bearings last. I did extensive cleaning but it is limited by the fact that I wasn’t willing to take the whole shaft, lobes and bearings assembly apart. It would have been a few hundred dollars more to send it out to a specialty shop for proper camshaft rebuild with new bearings, and I’d rather just find a replacement clean used power head if necessary. The motor will go back in service when I take it back to Ravenswing next month. So until then we will hope all is well ;)

Hi Matthias. Yes, this motor is now loud, which makes me think the crank bearings are not reliable. I’m not going to trust that powerhead for cruising adventures. It’s back home now for local use. The cheap backup Nissan I took to MX at the last minute worked great on the recent trip. If I take my truck back to the boat, I may swap the power heads as the grey tohatsu has a much better body and lower end.

Ouch, did I say that? At least I was thinking crankshaft anyway ;)
