I just bought my first home and moved in a month ago, thank God. The door to my bedroom wouldn't stay open or near closed no matter where you left it, it would swing back to the mid-way position by itself and that was driving me nuts. I found this video last night, I followed the easy instructions, and my problem was solved this morning. Thank you Rosie on the House!

Genius! My hinges were squeaky, so on a lazy afternoon I went around with some silicone lube and cleaned them up. It was a game changer. But ever since I had this one door that wouldn’t stay - as you said. And this was the master bath closet door, which - because of the layout - can come into contact with the toilet/shower door if they’re both open at similar angles. AND I found that if they’re both open just so the doorknobs can overlap and get jammed together, potentially locking someone in the toilet area of the bathroom. So I needed this door to stay where I wanted it and not be constantly opened by annoying house ghosts. I figured it was off balance and the silicone did too good of a job. I was about to resort to adding some dirt/sand to the hinge, but I thought I should do a quick check online and see what other people have tried before I go damaging my hinges. I would’ve never thought to bend the pin, even though it makes perfect sense. I did what you recommend and voila! Problem solved. You really helped me out! Thanks for a great tip presented succinctly!

Oh wow, you have just saved my arm from more scrapes. I didn’t even have to use a hammer to pull out the pin in the middle, probably because I have WD-40’d it from squeaking. I have a very small bathroom so I need the door to be open and it would always close in behind me or partially and I’d run into it. Thank you, thank you! 👏

We built a house 15 yrs ago (suffered door issue a long time) and all the doors work perfectly except for the most important door in the house the Master BEDROOM door always open and had to be latched via door handle to stay closed. This drove me crazy bec my cat could not come and go. I had to bend both the bottom and the middle hinge. doing just the bottom did not work so thanks for the tip to also do a second hinge. In addition, we have 4 pocket doors with higher end hardware railing. Guess what, 3 of the 4 doors slide in its pocket like a breeze but of course the master bedroom door is difficult to open and close. I've worked on it many different times to know avail. A video on a pocket door problem would also be helpful. Thank you!

I replaced the knobs and hinges and it was swinging slightly closed and I have been struggling trying to fix it. This worked like a charm. I did have to do it twice because when I had it on the ground it didn't enough of a bend and the door still moved. Just put it in a vice and gave a fair swing and had just enough bend to go in fairly easy but snug and stopped the swinging. Thanks so much. Marybeth

OMG! This worked fantastic on two doors. Additionally, its the small things I noticed. For example, the way you removed the pins with the claw of the hammer after punching it. All this time I was pulling pins out with my fingers and getting all that dirty grease on them LOL. Finally, your communication and delivery skills are excellent. You would fit in quite nicely on This Old House. Thanks again!

I see you have an Estwing hammer... my choice of hammer too. I have an heavy, old, solid core wooden door and I used the top hinge as recommended by others. Using the top hinge merely requires a slight bit more effort aligning the hinge when re-installing the pin. Not difficult. Easier than having to use the bottom hinge when one has only 2 hinges....IMO.....in my house.

This really worked for me. Did it in 2 to 3 minutes. Instead of pounding the the pin on a concrete floor though, I put it in a large bench vise I have, and then hit the part that stuck out with a hammer until I noticed just a slight bend. Went back in the door hinge pretty easy too. And my door is fixed after years of being annoyed with it.

I couldn't get a very good bend on that door hinge pin, even after several hits with a hammer, but it did bend a little and the door stays open if I put some extra pressure on the door and try to hold it on place for a second, I no longer need to use a door stopper. Thank you.
