Recently, as a result of my own incompetence, I dented one of the drivers of my Monitor Audio Bronze C150 center speaker. In this video we take a look at the damage, take a look inside the speaker and then finally install a new replacement driver.

Very decent polypropylene capacitors in the crossovers too. The different spade terminals save them money not having to strip them down and swap terminals. The lacquer on the pcb is a conformal coating to stop corrosion of the pcb tracks and solder joints: crossovers are good quality.

As you say, repairability in the hifi audio world is quite common - my BK sub started humming after 16 years of daily use. Dropped BK an email and they responded with a video showing how to take the amplification board out of the sub, asking me to post it back to them and they'll fix the board or replace it. Saves binning an entire subwoofer cabinet and driver. Great service.

Cameron what a great video, sorry to hear about the damage, but was great you could get a new one, iv monitor Audio my self did no the bolt held the driver in, thanks a lot for the video, great speaker 👍

When trying to fit he new speaker in I would try kind of unconventional way of putting the bolt first. When you bottom it out into the hole it should protrude just enough to put the speaker onto the bolt while being able to see it or feel it better. When the thread just catches I would then try to fit the speaker in.

Great video. I am looking to do the same thing for a monitor audio bronze 50 but there isn't a bolt on the back to remove the driver. Do you know how to remove the driver on that model?

Usually these sort of dents dont need to be fixed. Otherwise vacuum cleaner or strong pump is very helpful. For me whether i keep the grill on or off is not the tiniest bit the questions of the look, but purely acoustics. Metal grills usually don't need to be taken off. Cloth grills usually have a thick solid wooden rim which introduces a lot of diffraction. I think surround doesn't actually mind diffraction and could do with slightly muted sound as well, but main speakers need to be as diffraction free as possible. Which looking at this speaker isnt much of an option to begin with, oopsie. You don't want to see the tweeter smack dab in the middle and baffle edges near it straight, no.

I could have probably fixed it with a vacuum but it would have still likely been visible. I suspect you and I have very different priorities when it comes to speakers. While audio quality is of course very important to me, for me the aesthetics are also crucial as these are sitting out in my living room. I'm looking for something that sounds good but not something that is absolutely optimum in terms of scientific measurements. While I'm absolutely not an expert on all of this diffraction type stuff, I trust that Monitor Audio would have done their research when designing these and they sound absolutely perfect to me. In particular, with this being a center speaker it spends most of its time either silent, or producing dialogue, so doesn't seem like things like the position of the tweeter is necessarily going to make a huge difference to the overall experience of listening to the whole system.

@@camerongray1515 You probably would have introduced a vacuum tip ring seeing as this thin foil seems fragile. And vacuum not strong enough to pull hardened dents like that. No functional damage. When not using speaker or when fiddling with stuff around it, put grills on. That's what I try to do anyway. Too many nice cones around waiting for some cable to whip into them

Have you thought about making your own grills? You're a pretty handy person so I bet you could make a nice looking cover. Maybe ask DIYPerks for help, since all you UK KZbinrs know each other, right? 😜

The speakers came with grilles I could have used, I just prefer the look of the speakers without them. I'm pretty handy when it comes to technical stuff, but I'm utterly incompetent when it comes to making things look good 😅
@David_Phantom
@David_Phantom Жыл бұрын
@@camerongray1515 I meant you could make grilles you like the look of. Also, you make your walls and ceilings look good after you put holes in them, you make your bathroom look good when you had to improvise stuff, so how much different can making a grilles be? :P

Haha, you're just lucky that all you've seen is what you can make out on camera, the paint and silicone job I ended up doing in that bathroom is absolutely dreadful! Really need to redo it!

If this is the grey version gen6 you can buy the whole thing for £150.

It looks as though there are heavy discounts on the Bronze 6G range currently, at the time of making this video a replacement speaker would have cost around £299. At any rate, even at £150, it was still cheaper and better for the environment to replace the driver for £75.

Plastic baskets are fine as long as they are made properly. Usually quality speakers with such baskets will last decades. Once I had a super cheap speaker that used a plastic basket made from plastic you would use for a crappy bucket and you could bend it out of alignment lol

I would be very interested in how to remove that tweeter mesh cover. I need to remove mine and I can't see any way to do it without damage.

Take off the rear terminals and see if anything attaches the tweeters from the rear? Otherwise might have to heat the cover with hair dryer and attempt to peel it.
