The button on the underside, you pressed to get more wire out, can also be 'struck' on a harder surface whilst actually strimming, so you don't have to stop the machine and do it. Great video as usual, Mr Fowler!

You do realise that you can just tap the strimmer on the ground while it is spinning and it will extend the line. No need to do it by hand.

I do see one drawback with this particular model: the lack of speed control. Many of the other Makita cordless trimmers has at least three speeds. I'm not saying this has to be a problem for everyone, but I do a lot of trimming with my gas-powered machine at reduced speed.

It's a brilliant bit of kit for the money. Not as powerful as my old electric grass strimmer but so light and no leads to worry about!

Well you've broken my Mrs, already did the trimming and lawn edging yesterday morning after a mow. Looks a good bit of kit. I've got very similar with stihl. Can't find what I'd done with the shoulder strap though. Perhaps it's on one of her bags haha.

What about this for cutting back overgrown soft weeds/nettles etc. I have some large areas of newly grown weeds/grass due to be landscaped in time but would this work to cut those back? My dad has a brilliant petrol strimmer but I don’t want to keep asking him to bring it over. He’s suggested this for me.

Hi, yes it's not as powerful as a petrol strimmer but it's been really good for me. I think it will be find on weeds but not anything like brambles. It's really light and the battery lasts a long time. If you shop around you can get deals at places like powertool world or ffx.

Well - what I would need to know is how it handles more serious weeds than just grass!? What if there is a bit more serious and long grown jungle and not just short grass. Would be good if you included stuff like that on your video to make it more realistic - what it can and cannot do!?

Yeah, that would be a good idea, I don't think it is really suitable for really overgrown areas.

I bought DUR193 in August 2023, it worked 14 months, now broken. I bought 2 spare motors from my dealer thinking that would fail first (like my DUR181 previously) but no, the big plastic gear above the strimmer head unstuck from its shaft and slips making it useless. Super glue is not strong enough. I cannot find that part listed yet, am asking the dealer today if he can get from Japan.

If you registered your DUR193 with makita within 30 days of purchase, you get 3 years guarantee. All of my makita tools (i have a lot) are all registered to avoid situations like this. If you get any other Makita products, ensure you register them on makita's website.

@@FixitwithFowler thank you :-) here in Indonesia we get 2 years so I'm covered, my dealer has just found some of the parts for me. If I send it to a service center I could also get them to repair it. Really I just wanted to let you know what part on mine has failed. Perhaps we give it some heavy use so thats what failed first.

How long does the battery last?

I can do the edges of 2 lawns, one about 40m x 12m and the other 14m x 20m and there is still 3 bars of battery left. So the 18v 5ah battery lasts ages on a single charge

It may look it, but i have been using it regularly since my review, and I can honestly say it isn't. However, if I was comparing the power of those to a mains powered strimmer, then it isn't as powerful, but then again, it won't be.

Every time I stop my Makita 18V LXT string trimmer, the head spins off. I cannot figure out how to tighten it enough for it to stay on every time I stop my string trimmer. The 3yr warranty just ran out. Any ideas on how I can fix it?

Oh no, that's not something I've come across. Have you tried contacting makita direct, they are normally really good

If the head is removable, which yours obviously is, then there will be a hole somewhere where you can insert a metal rod (screwdriver or hex driver will work as well). Spin the head by hand and when the second hole appears, the rod will drop a bit and lock the head in place. You can then tighten it properly.

like a bellend i bought the black and decker one purely bcoz i had a spare battery from the drill i bought from lidl back in 2021. which also had a charger. remember when they had the drill, battery and charger for 45 quid? well ide bought that. so 3 years later ide started a gaedening business. (bought loads of makita tools labouring and ended up with 10 batteries. so when ide bought the shit black and decker strimmer, i wasnt aware that makita made gardening kit. the reason why i think the black n decker strimmer at 90 quid is shit is bcoz the battery takes 4 hours to charge fully. and what do you get out of that 4 hours? 20 minutes ON ECO MODE!! not a good deal that is it? however, 20 mins charging the makita battery on a makita charger gives u 20-40 mins usage. seem like a no brainer. so im selling the black and decker drill, 2 batteries and charger, and also a corded black n decker strimmer and just bought the makita 18v strimmer. my gardening jobs are increasing. gaining more n more customers every week. so.....i now have the makita 18v for small lawn jobs and went out n bought the makita petrol strimmer for large lawn jobs (where there are no windows close by LOL. last year i bought the makita 36v mower too. thats a decent bit of kit for small to medium lawns but i worked it out..... going through 2 batteries each time, then whipping them onto the double charger, and using another 2 fully charged batteries.... over the months ile be draining their capacity very quick...and at 60-70 quid each.......i decided to buy a petrol mower. finally got my tools tweaked down to efficiency. Oh and i bought the makita telescopic hedge trimmer too. hardly use it but its decent tool!! hope my massive story helped someone make sense of gardening jobs hahaha
