What an absolute unit. I'm currently working on one of our ancient Matsuura 3-axis mills and I just got done with roughing a 1100 lb block down to the point where the largest of our 5-axis machines can actually lift it 😅

Good point re fixturing in general.. in my days as a NC PROGRAMMER it was something that planners and cost analysers overlooked especially on castings and similar prismatic components. Trying to explain that design and Toolroom manufacture would be required sometimes boiled my brain. Other than that, great times.

Not to forget I believe you have a rotating table somewhere in the shop, I believe instead of flipping that job you can fit a rotating table to your Grinding table and then, yes, rotate it while grinding that will even give you a great surface finish!! Challenge Jessy!

@@MrPRECLIK if the setup isnt perfect, yes, but rotary grinding with a spinning magnetic chuck can give much better results on large workpieces because you stop worrying about twist in a long machine axis, and instead worry about tilt on a much shorter rotary axis, which is relatively easy to adjust for (grind the magnet on the machine, if nothing else). It's one of the reasons double-disc grinding is so effective. Rotary grinding would also have been probably about half the time, even considering the extra setup, because the mag chuck and that now-magnetic material don't need to be meticulously cleaned several times. I do it at work on parts that need to be flat and parallel within .0002 and can be sub-tenth with relative ease, less than .00005 with some extra care taken in setup. We had one job with a stack of discs on a rotating arbor that runout across the whole assembly (28 large discs, with 27 smaller in between as spacers) was .0002 tir. Takes a lot of time to set up, or a lot of practice setting it up quickly, then it's relatively straightforward. Defeating the magnetic distortion from the chuck and stresses from heat treatment was the worst bit.

You can’t those magnets will scratch the shit out of your fixtures from any chips they pick up, lifting bolts is a much better option. I used to use them at my last job they worked great to move ( yes It sounds bad) long shafts into my lathe.
@GrumpyMachinist

I'm not so sure. We use magnets occasionally but the big problem with magnets is magnetizing fixtures and every fine piece of material is drawn to the fixtures. However, sometimes you just have to do what you gotta do...

Oh god, what a nightmare of a setup if you don't get the table super clean or accidentally drag a chip onto the table when loading the fixture/chuck. I love the challenge but setups like this are why I'm grumpy. My back doesn't like all the leaning into the machine anymore. It will usually take a couple of days for me to recoup. That chuck is beast tho.

Hey! I'm wondering if you know how to paint/fill text and symbols that are cnc engraved onto metal such as aluminium? I have previously ordered cnc engraved panels from some various companies, and they always fill the engraved text with paint - either white or some other color. Is this paint, powder coating, what is it - and how do you do it?

@tizianoxocco4413
@tizianoxocco4413 Жыл бұрын
