I think Gift of the Metallic Dragon has potential for monoclass warlocks. Adding Cure Wounds to your spell list is quite good paired with Gift of the Ever Living Ones invocation, letting you maximize your self-healing from Cure Wounds. Plus, a free casting of any spell is nice for the warlock. Plus, the warlock really doesn’t want to spend spell slots on Shield, and can’t always get it on their spell list. The defensive features will be very nice for a warlock too.

The draconic gifts section is designed for just such rewards. I'm not sure why these weren't included as draconic gifts. If the designers wanted to give players the control to take them as feats rather than leaving it to DM generosity they should have made them a little bit stronger so they were worth taking as feats. They don't feel evocative enough of dragons to me to fulfill their stated role of giving any player some draconic ancestry. There is nothing about telekinetic retribution that screams dragon and you could as easily flavour the Telekinesis feat as having a Gem dragon related origin. You could use magic adept to give yourself Thaumaturgy, Resistance and Command for example and flavour that as being due to draconic heritage and feel more draconic than you would with these feats.

I'd put Gift of the Chromatic Dragons on a Paladin. Paladin's tend to be really bad at Dex saves, even with Aura of Protection, and the chromatic damage types often target dex saves. Giving the Paladin a way to get a bunch of castings of a damage reduction ability, PLUS just a flat d4 on damage (that CAN stack with Divine Favour because its not concentration) and you can have a paladin thats hard to put down from its most common weakness, dealing an extra 2d4 damage on attacks, with extra room for smites because you're not investing spell slots into Absorb Elements (assuming you dipped a level multiclass into a class that gets that spell). I'd put this feat on a sword and board paladin.

I really think the chromatic dragon feat is underrated on martial classes, fighter can benefit a lot from this one. The damage stacks with other sorces such as the aforementioned divine favor, and a adaptable resistance is a lot better than it seems at the first glance. It is a more practical feat, easy to use, stacks with other similar effects and the resistence is good.

The build that combos with the Gift of the Chromatic Dragon is the Tempest Domain Cleric. As your 8th level feat alongside polearm master or booming blade strategies. For example, using high elf to get boomimg blade alongside glaive proficiency using Tasha's racial adjustments. The class doesn't get absorb elements, and adding lightning to your weapon damage allows you to trigger the 6th level Thundrous Strike push ability while also getting some benefit out of divine strike.
@jonathanvanoostveen53093 жыл бұрын
The problem is that this only becomes really useful with 5 levels of fighter for action surge and extra attack. Which then becomes an 11 level build. Might as well get the crusher feat and go straight fighter. Or combine both but that has to be a high level campaign to be worth it.

While Gift of the Gem Dragons' damage doesn't scale, it is useful to note that the push gets more valuable at higher levels as more enemies can multiattack; with decent positioning that makes enemies use their movement to get to you, it can mean you take one attack instead of two or three. I could see taking the feat in particular on Hexblade builds; they like the +1 Cha of course, and unlike most casters they don't really have a good defensive reaction since Shield is eating up a precious resource. It's still a somewhat niche feat, but I do think it serves a pretty different role from Telekinetic; I want to use Gem Dragon when I need to deter melee attackers and actually care about damage numbers, while I want to use Telekinetic on a character that really wants to influence positioning to utilize something like Spike Growth.

Chromatic Feels like an option that you might give a caster that wants to have an extra non-concentration support option (bard, maybe?). They can touch an ally's weapon (bonus if it's the Crossbow Expert) to give it a boost (and unlike Elemental Weapon, it can be magical), and get partial compensation by getting a weaker Absorb Elements (which a bard doesn't get unless they multi or use a Magical Secrets selection, which might not work out depending on the build youé going for). That doesn't change the fact that it's just "okay", but there are definitely scenarios where a supportive character might take it and it would be worth the trouble.

I'm considering gift of the metallic dragon for my Eldritch knight/war wizard playing through Rise of Tiamat. The thing to remember about shield and absorb elements is that they are awesome spells, but after you cast them 4 times total, they become second level spells, then third, etc. If I can get away with arcane deflection or gotmd early in the adventuring day and save a spell slot, that's potentially a lot of damage prevented when I have to use shield or absorb elements vs a dragon later on. The fact that I also get cure wounds for some emergency healing is just a nice bonus.
@AuxCasts3 жыл бұрын
I think something to be mentioned for the Chromatic Feat is it's not using your concentration while Divine Favour or Elemental Weapon, definitely doesn't suddenly make it broken but the fact you could stack it with Divine Favour gives it a lot more value. On top of that I think for a lot of martials you can usually avoid B/P/S damage with high AC but it's going to hurt when hit with elemental spells or abilities and you don't usually have Absorb Elements to negate this. I think the feat functions well to make up for that gap, I don't completely disagree with your assessment though but I could see it being good on a fighter who gets a lot of attacks and extra ASI's to allow for the luxury of a feat like this. I think of the 3 this is the only feat I would really see myself taking, would definitely find value in a campaign with a bunch of casters or dragons where you can get good value from reducing say a few Fireballs or Breath attacks a day.

The value of Gift of the Metallic Dragon I think is giving a class that doesn't have access to cure woulds, like a sorcerer or wizard, access to a bit of healing. As a defensive option it's not bad, not great, but at least it doesn't cost any additional resources. It's ok but not phenomenal.
@shawnpeterson25233 жыл бұрын
On the one hand, I guess they missed the boat with these feats. Had they made them more like fey touched, then they would be really nice. But, on the other hand, it is now at a point where if I make a magic user and DON"T take fey touched (or at least it's ugly cousin shadow touched), then I feel like I am doing it wrong. I mean, everyone wants misty step, and it doesn't even matter if you could have already had misty step anyway because it still frees up a spell slot. So, yeah, these feats probably need more, but fey touched probably needs less. IDK, maybe the meh shadow touched is the sweet spot? I did use the metallic dragon one on a celestial warlock that I was trying to build as a support, rather than the standard damage dealer warlock. I think it works, but it's a fairly niche use case.
@aprinnyonbreak12903 жыл бұрын
I think Feytouched's problem is that it's a half-feat, yet is comparable to a full feat for most purposes. So, if you made a character with a 17 or 15 in the appropriate stat, it's essentially getting BOTH the feat and the ASI. Like, it's a good enough feat that Fighters may seriously be looking at it as their bonus feats pile uo, with maybe a +1 to perception on the side. I think the problem really is Feytouched being overtuned as far as feats go. It'd be like if Polearm Master also gave your choice of +1 Str, Con, or Dex, but was totally balanced because Polearms are just a handful of weapons, nevermind that they're great weapons.

For Gift of the Chromatic dragon, I'm not sure if I'd call the 1st benefit a 2nd level spell - I'd probably place it between 2nd and 3rd level - taking a concentration spell and making it non-concentration adds ~2 levels imo (eg, wall of force -> forcecage). However, that doesn't really change the ranking - being usable 1/day is rough, even if it is a powerful effect in a lot of situations imo. Also, the Reactive Resistance is notably worse than Absorb Elements in one way - it only applies to that one instance, while Absorb Elements lasts until the start of your turn. How much that impacts things heavily depends on the fight, but I think it's worth pointing out. On the whole, it feels like a pretty decent feat - but not one that's worth picking up early, since it's not build defining. For gift of the metallic dragon, one noteworthy thing on the first part is that it's a way to get a healing spell in classes that don't usually get them - which can be valuable if you're with a DM that doesn't allow multiclassing. I do agree that as a feat it's not very useful on the whole, but I could see a situation where it pops up. Something like a hexblade could be an example, where you're going to be in melee (and don't have low level slots for shield/absorb elements, so the dragon wings might get some use), might be next to another frontliner (to save them from time to time) and having a healing spell could be nice. But that's very marginal, and in most cases I'd still rather dip for one level to get features like that rather than spend an entire feat on it.

Metallic dragon is definitely the best of them. Probably best on people wearing light/medium armor like rogues/dex rangers. Still not amazing. Getting cure wounds, and 2-4 uses of minor shield spells for yourself is VERY comparable to the the "magic initiate" feat. Shield is probably one of the best spells in the game, and for one feat you basically get a free dip into a half caster class in terms of the "spell slots" you get. Having that clutch healing spell on a pure martial class in your back pocket can be huge, and the wings aren't even bad! I'd give it at least a C in terms of feats. If the range on the wings was say, 10-15 ft, it'd actually pretty great. Maybe a rogue who's trying to get sneak attack anyway so is near allies. Then the occasional time you get hit you have the chance of adding that 2-4 AC.

There's a possible build with the first feat involving the Tempest Cleric Thunderous Strikes. Adding lightning damage repels the enemy by 10 yards. If you can add booming blade (which REALLY should be a Tempest Cleric spell) via another feat or multiclassing, then you can use your booming blade to repel the enemy, forcing him to move on its turn to get back in melee range. I think the Gift of the Metallic Dragon (wings) are broken when paired with a tank with a soft taunt (disadvantage when attacking someone else). It would provide the tank a reaction to beef up a low AC by up to 5, if a disadvantaged attack were to land on a squishy. In other words, it would really shine when the tank is having a hard time repositioning in the middle of a fight and the squishy can't afford to take damage (maybe because it's a Paladin's strike, which might have a divine smite behind it). I think the heal is also amazing from this perspective, as it would allow you to make the hard choice of letting a squishy die, and roll some saves, significantly easier for a couple rounds of breathing room.

I would use Chromatic Gift on a fighter. Fighters rarely get many resistances, so the ability to just half damage on some pretty common elements is a good way to make you a bit tankier. In addition, the 1d4 extra damage becomes a lot more frightening when comboed with action surge. Metallic Gift can also be good on fighters, who usually don't have spell casting access to friendly healing or Shield spell. This damage increases to 2d4 at 5th Level, 3d4 at 11th level and 4d4 at 16th level. You choose the type of damage this ability does when you infuse the weapon, choosing from: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. You can only use this ability once per long rest. Reactive Resistance: When you take damage of a type from the following-acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison-you can use your reaction to give yourself resistance to that triggering damage type until the start of your next turn. This resistance applies to the damage which triggered the reaction and any subsequent damage of the same type until this ability ends. Alternatively you may use this ability to use your reaction when you are required to make a saving throw that will result in taking damage from any of the listed types, you can add 1d4 to the saving throw and take 1/2 damage if you fail and no damage if you succeed. This ability can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest. Gift of the Metallic Dragon The power of a metallic dragon has manifested within you, giving you the following benefits: Draconic Healing: You learn the Healing Word spell and can cast it for free as a level 1 spell once per long rest, you can cast it additional times by using spell slots if you have any. The spellcasting ability for this spell is Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, you choose when you gain this feat. Protective Wings: When you or another creature you can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack or forced to make a saving throw, you can use your reaction to shield the affected creature with spectral wings. The creature gains a bonus to their AC or Saving Throw equal to your proficiency bonus, potentially making the attack miss or giving a success on a save. The creature also gains resistance to damage dealt by the attack or source of the saving throw. You can use this ability before or after the d20 is rolled, but you must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest. Gift of the Gem Dragon: The power of a gem dragon has manifested within you, giving you the following benefits: Ability Score Increase: Increase your choice of Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma by 1, to a maximum of 20. Telekinetic Shield: When you take damage from a creature within 10 feet, you can use your reaction to gain resistance to the damage and force that creature to make a Strength saving throw. The DC equals 8+ your proficiency bonus + the Ability score you increased with this feat; on a failed save the creature takes 2d8 force damage and is pushed up to 10 feet away from you, and on a success, the creature isn’t pushed and only takes half of the damage. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.

I think what is overlooked here for metallic and chromatic is that these are great options for non-Spellcasters who don't have the spell slots to recast a 1st level spell of fey touched or Shadow touched. A caster is definitely better off with shield or absorb elements. But especially a barbarian can appreciate 2-6 discount shield/absorb elements every day. Any non-third caster fighter or rogue would as well. I'm not sure if they are good enough. They're definitely not premier. But I can definitely see them as like a decent option for a 3rd or 4th ASI. And I think that's a healthy power level for a feat.

There are some campaigns where Gift of the Chromatic dragon is pretty useful: if you're fighting evil elemental wizards and evil dragons in every single session multiple times per day you'll get a lot of use out of that bootleg absorb elements; even if you already had absorb elements, this is more uses of it in a campaign where you'll need to use it a lot. And the bootleg elemental weapon is a little useful too, i guess. But honestly, can we expect dragons and wizards to make up most of your encounters even in campaigns with a higher than average number of them? However, I can't think of campaigns where the other two feats would be useful, other than maybe "level 1 one-shot" for the Gift of the Gem dragon since that 2d8 damage might instantly explode a goblin who hits you or something. But who plays level 1 one shots? When I hear the words "one-shot" i think "oooh! levels 5-20". I really want to like these feats but HNNGGGGGG other things are so much better

I think the gift of cromatic dragon feat is great for a Vhuman or Custom Lineage Barbarian. While just one per assault, you can have the durability of a bear totem barbarian when it matters but with another subclass, i can think of Beast Barbarian from the top of my head, so you can also make the best use for the d4 damage boost with your triple claw attack at level 5.

The HUGE advantage of gift of the chromatic dragon is the absence of the concentration requirement. SO you can take fey touched with hunter mark or bless AND add gift of the chormatic dragon on top, while if you took divine favor you cannot also cast bless So imagine a build where you specialize in having a huge amoutn of attack, and that you can in a realiable way have at 1 one fight per day where you can set up before the fight (let's imagine a rogue 1, gloom stalker ranger3 with 5 level of fighter battle master (we are not playing in Matt Mercer games, so no Echo knight for us), The would allow that character to have a pretty good stealth check (ranger cast pass wthout trace, plus rogue expertise in stealth etc... giving him HUGE bonus in stealth scouting ahead and seeing a group of ennemy. Send a warning using telepathy (any good party should have a solid telepathy option) to the party to join him in 6 seconds (1 rounds) then cast cast bless, apply gift of the dragon on his weapon on the first round, the ennemy still didn't detect him so still no initiative, second round Run toward the first target (initiave start 1st round of combat) action for 2 attacks, gloom stalker ambush add 1 more attack in the mix, action surge for an other action giving 2 more attack plus a 6th attack with the gloom stalker ambush, then free interaction wo switch your weapon in the ther hand and bonus action for an off hand attack. That is 7 weapon damage (and I mean if the invisible sorcerer want to tag along he could cast haste and give me an 8th attack) and I'm sure if we theocraft a bit we can find additonal way to gain more attacks; all dealing an extra 1d4 (so 7d4 extra damage, that is 17.5 additional damage without concentration and without requiring a -5 on my attack roll and without requiring a special weapon type (and not all feat can be as strong as great weapon fighting as you said in your feat survey video) and it will keep going for the entire fight (very rare are teh fight lasting more then 9 rounds) it cannot be dispalled (it's not a spell) I mean sure, divine favor offer a similar boost, but you need to choose between divine favor or bless or hunter mark. Who will take divine favor adding 1d4 when for the same spell slot and same concentration you could get hunter mark dealing 1d6 and lasting 1 hour (sure costing 1 bonus action when switching target) Then let's imagine you are a tempest cleric, here an eay way to get lighting infuse weapon to benefit from that free push when dealing lightning damage. Fighting a troll or a flesh Golem, no problem here a free fire weapon. Could it be better? sure, make the duration 1 hours or make it recharge on a short rest or maybe put it inthe same poll as teh defensive reaction and you can use either a umber of time per day equal to your profiency would be interesting Would I take it on every build? no it's not crossbow expert, sharp shooter, lucky or great weapon master, it' snot a feat taxe, but I will certainly take it on build having multiple attacks or being able to benefit from the damage type. and yes it require a bonus action to set up, but I'm sure you can prepare before a fight at least once per day. Approcahing a door hearing the ennemy behind it and getting ready before oppening, or stealthig around getting ready to ambush or during a conversation that is deterioting fast etc... just need it to happen once a day to make full use of it, or if you know the fight will last a few rounds (facing the BBEG and his leutenant) or if you are not in position to be able to use your other bonus action (stuck at range, unable to do a off hand attack, you shoot with your shortbow, and put gift of chromatic dragon on your shortsword gettign it ready for the next round.

As for "when you might take it," I'm considering adding Gift of the Gem Dragon to a Psi Warrior Fighter. The Psi Warrior gets Telekinetic Movement at Level 3, which makes the Telekinetic feat's invisible Mage Hand mostly irrelevant. Also, they have many uses for bonus actions, but (aside from opportunity attacks) only one for a reaction: Protective Field. And its adds versatility to be able to choose to push-and-damage on a reaction versus shielding. Also, the flavor of Gift of the Gem Dragon seems a better match to the "rough and ready" feel of the Psi Warrior. Your thoughts?

I think Gift of the Chromatic Dragon could be useful for Tempest Clerics as a way to reliably have lightning damage on their normal attacks, allowing them to push enemies around with Thunderbolt Strike without having to give up their concentration. Granted, there are a lot more ways to push enemies around nowadays compared to how it used to be, but if a player was trying to get the most out of that aspect of the Tempest Cleric, I'd give it a soft recommendation.

Metallic feels like it might be a good fit for my Warlock. While an ASI is always useful for something, her Charisma's already 20. Cure Wounds would be a nice addition to her spell list since it would get cast at 5th level if she uses a slot and while she does know Shield, she'd rather not use a slot for it. Comparing it to Defensive Duelist, you do at least lose the finesse weapon requirement, you're able to use it on ranged attacks, and you can use it to shelter others. On my lock, she'd mainly be using it to protect herself, but she *might* be hanging out next to the cleric and want to use it to protect her as well. I'm likelier to just do Eldritch Adept and pick up another Invocation, but I'm at least going to consider Gift of the Metallic Dragon next time I get a feat.

Gift of the Gem is good for the damage at low levels, but rapidly gets worse. Maybe if you're a hexblade, monk, rogue, or war cleric (or Zheal cleric) that has their bonus action tied up and you take this at L1. It should do a number of D8s equal to your proficiency bonus or something.

@treantmonk I've noticed in the other feats that grant spells that they specify that you learn the level 1 spell X and can cast it once for free. However this feat for metallic dragon says you learn the spell cure wounds and can cast it once per long rest without a spell slot. It doesn't specify it is learned as a level one spell.. I wonder does that mean you can cast it at any level you can cast at. If you are level 3 you can cast it as a level 2 spell as opposed a first level for free? Why not say you learn the first level cure wounds spell if they weren't letting you cast at a higher level for the free casting. What do you think? Is my argument weak?

Gift of the metallic dragons is the standout imo. Great for a sorcerer or wizard. Grants access to a healing spell, an essentially extra casts of shield which scale with level an can be cast on a Ally which is pretty great. Could be decent on a var human sorcerer who wants to twin spell cure wounds without being divine soul. The real issue is that allot of classes don't get enough ascii's to justify this. Once again I feel locked out here unless I'm playing a fighter. Maybe they'd be good on eldritch knight? Chromatic infusion seems standout for them here

There are lots of threads on various Internet forums on how to do that exact thing - make a monk-like build without taking mini levels. That being said, I’ve never seen one that actually outperforms a base monk, which is a pretty low bar. If you want a high-mobility skirmisher, just buying a horse, grabbing Mounted Combatant, and doing an otherwise normal build will probably outperform most pseudomonks. The bladesinging idea isn’t bad, but you’ll be a primary spell caster first and foremost. If your wizard, even a Bladesinger, insists on running directly into battle, they will not last particularly long.

I'm curious how often DMs tend to award those weaker feats to players, heck even just on the racial kind (outside of Elves and Halflings). Obviously it would be a hard sell to just ask for Mobile or Sentinel "for free", but Gift of the Chromatic Dragon, Poisoner or even some weaker half feats like Chef and Keen Mind feel like I would never actively spend the limited ressource for... which is a shame cuz there are mini features that look occasionally neat... just in very minimal ways.
@nicka36973 жыл бұрын
Is there any synergy with these feats and the equivalent dragonborn races? It is sometimes nice to take a racial feat that enhances your choice of race and while these are not limited to a specific race I wonder if there is some roleplay synergy here at least.

I think the Metallic Dragon feat wouldn't be a terrible option on a wizard I'm playing right now. The party's only healer right now is the paladin, who also doubles as one of the front line fighters/tanks and so it could be handy to have that option to get them back in the fight quickly in the event the only real healer gets taken out. Though if I wanted to go that route, I could also instead go with Magic Initiate and choose Bard or Cleric and also gain a couple cantrips out of it. I could even swap Cure Wounds for Healing Word which would allow me to still cast a cantrip as an action. The only benefit I would get from the Metallic Dragon feat in that regard is that I could use my best ability (Int) for the healing instead of my weaker Wis/Cha. So even then, it is kind of a toss up, and I think Magic Initiate would still have a sleight edge.
@SamXala3 жыл бұрын
Remember that you can only use once per day any spell that you learn from Magic Initiate if it is from any other class, Gift of the Metallic Dragon gives you the chance to spend any spells slots for Cure Wounds if you need more uses. I think this feat is good for a wizard if you're with a small party and there's no healer at all

@leodouskyron56713 жыл бұрын
The fact is the design intent is not clear on the feats vs gifts of the dragon. And they seem gun shy on letting these feats be powerful as a result. The Chromatic gift is (like everything in the book) lesser and not too useful. And the bonus maybe helps a bit if you are a Drakewarden and using it on the Drake if you had to summon them but niche case. The gem is sorta cool as the damage is good at the lower levels and when the damage gets poor, the push keeps multi-attacks off you for the squishy people. The metallic (again) is the best because if you are a quarter ( arguably even half) caster then getting cute is positive and in the case of say a Eldritch Knight when you have good armor maybe saving that shield spell will be valuable (maybe).
@NiteCoffee2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't take concentration and doesn't specify non-magical weapon. You can stack it with divine favor and/or elemental weapon... or Hunter's mark. If you have multiple attacks, It does a fair bit! Also, there's no counterspell to the feat.

Like many features in Fizban's, the Chromatic Dragon feat seems like it would work much better if there were more monsters that were Vulnerable or otherwise hindered by specific elements. As it stands, though, being able to chose to inflict, say, Lightning damage on a foe just isn't that great.
