You haven't noticed the cats? If you approach any random cat, it'll rear back and hiss at Geralt. All but two. The second of the two walks right past Geralt right before his fight with Olgierd, forcing him to step back out of its way. It's extremely subtle, but it's a small added detail. Details have meaning. The cat strolls past Geralt in the direction of where O'Dimm appears from. The first is actually in the main storyline of the game. When Geralt finds Tamara. As he waits for her to come downstairs, a cat appears atop a table. Completely unfazed by Geralt. Geralt takes an interest in this cat, stooping down to analyze it, seeming perplexed by its lack of reaction to him before Tamara distracts him. Again, just another added detail with seemingly no purpose. Could these two cats have been O'Dimm following Geralt? Also, where was Geralt when one of Olgierd's men just so happened to be posting the contract at the exact time Geralt was there and when O'Dimm can be seen, for the first time, lurking in the background? The Seven Cats Inn, of course.
@Fizhy
@Fizhy 19 күн бұрын
The cat appears to be its own mystery/inside joke from CD Projekt. I think its purpose in the cutscene where Geralt finds Tamara is to use the cat as a distraction so the camera doesn't have to focus on some scuffed stair descending animations. The cat that doesn't immediately hiss at Geralt is apparently called Nibbles and shows up a lot. Perhaps Nibbles is watching the Witcher on behalf of O'Dimm, I like this idea but I can't say it occurred to me when producing.

"Rome" or in Polish "Rzym" is a fairly common name for traditional inns in Poland, as a nod to the legend of course. The moon is also part of some versions of this legend, as it is said that when the devil captured Twardowski and was taking him away, the nobleman managed to free himself at the last moment, either by praying or invoking the unfulfilled part of the contract. The devil dropped him off but instead of returning to earth Twardowski landed on the moon where he lives until this day. In the game ''standing togather on the moon" was likely not mentioned before the ending simply because it would be too obvious of a twist to the Polish audience.

Polish VA for Gaunter is brilliant, he just sounds distrustfully happy to be there
@Fizhy
@Fizhy 19 күн бұрын
Ooh that sounds even more eerie. The English VA has a more flat tone, not dimensionless at all simply, calm and eerie and that range widens as you get to more lucrative conversations. Can't hide those slight Scottish twangs in Alex Norton's voice mind you.
@ThePresidentofMars

1:44:30 i suspect gaunter chose the lady because he felt her forsaking of the old customs was a slight to him, just how he felt slighted when the drunkard kept impeding Geralt's path. if he was just a beggar asking for food, it wouldn't have held much significance or weight but using a custom centuries old did, i feel customs are like rituals or sacrifices for the pagan gods which gaunter essentially is, a god of contracts. So, like refusing to offer a portion of your harvest might anger a god of agriculture, shoeing off someone in need of aid in the manner she did, then saying they are less deserving than a mutt. she kinda had it coming. in his mind at least.

The name Gaunter O’Dimm and the acronym it presents (G.O.D) blatantly reveals how O’Dimm sees himself or wishes to be seen; a God. A true God, though, wouldn’t be so vein - dimm is definitely some version of the devil, or at minimum a demon, envious of God’s title. Such a great character, so many interpretations. A devil whom’s acts of evils reflect humanity’s flawed morality. Great video !

Gaunter O'Dimm has been one of my favorite video game characters for a good while now, and i personally have had some thoughts about him. the 2 critical clues to his "true nature" or what not that i personally believe in are the title of "master of mirrors" and his sentence of "But i could" during the wedding event. I believe he reflects, to at least some extent the human nature and the personal nature of people back to them, seen in him having nice conversation with the 2 elderly, wishing Shani had better end for the night she got dragged in to, and his treatment of von Emeric and the noble lady from blood and vine. "I would if i could" comes to mind with the 2 latter: i believe O'Dimm knew that the noble lady would send homeless vagrant in to the woods starving if given the change, and i believe he knew von Emeric would spill the blood of his own for the love of his life if given the change. so, as were shown over the game that he is not bound only to contracts, i believe he uses the contracts to ruin those who would do such to others if given the change, just as a some sick game of "I have the means to do as i wish, just as you would if only given the chance". there is also the scholar who had such greed for knowledge that he would not stop even as he was going blind. Edit; this came out as a bit of a rant and being non-native english speaker i have no idea how to put it to better words, so i will just add this TLDR at the end: I believe O'Dimm targets those who to an extent believe 'might makes right'. those who believe they have the right of walking over others for their own benefit because they have the means of doing so, and simply shows them its not very good idea, because in that world something else will walk over you.

Since Gaunter is meant to be, by most people's interpretations anyway, the Witcher universe's equivalent of Satan or at least a higher level demon, that line of his, "When all is said and done, I am a merchant," has always stuck with me. Gaunter has been speculated over exhaustively, but I always thought that was something of significance that has been relatively neglected.

The talk with the grannies about gingerbread is the only seemingly innocuous thing he's done, if not for Gaunter knowing that it would unsettle Geralt himself("So you were listening to my talk!" quote later in the tavern when Geralt mentioned it. He always knew that Geralt was highly suspicious and wary of him, so talking about time was meant to make Geralt guess what he was up against. In the tavern Gaunter clearly demonstrated what he could do with his powers of time to a random blok, as a warning to the witcher that he should not even consider regular monster slaying against him(which Geralt did by trying to investigate the nature of O'Dimm through his questions feigned as curiosity).

in my headcanon Gaunter is an entity just like Q from star trek. Q are immortal almost all powerful beings you could call them gods. They're extremely bored since most of them already experienced everything that can be experienced. So for some of them the only entertaiment value that they get is from playing with the more primitive species. Creating games, giving them a challange to overcome for their own amusement or just messing around with them. Sometimes being marely an annoyance but sometimes they're straight up evil. But not everything is allowed since all Q live in a 'society" called Q continuum. All Q kinda oversee eachother. for example its not allowed for any Q to give powers to other primitive species or have children with them. If Gaunter o'dim has something like that it would explain why he has to go when Geralt beats him, its because other like him would force him to obey the rules he himself set up. And he had to set up those rules so the rest of his species allowed him to have his little game.

Huh, didn't realise you were going all in on _Witcher 3_ content, EJ. It's good though! Didn't think more than a decade after the game came out people would still be making compelling video essays on it, but here we are. And what a good choice of subject - Gaunter is one of the best written characters in a video game series full of them. Master Mirror, the Master Manipulator. A man who, in his own words (about Olgierd but applies to himself) "feeds on the pain and suffering of others". Although there is a little truth to him being a self-described "travelling merchant", like most of what he says, there's a lot more to it that he *isn't* saying, and that all adds to the illusion, mystery and danger of him. How every conversation is a transactional exchange, a way to put more and more people in his debt. That is his greatest pleasure in life, that power, but able to do it while seemingly incognito, so no-one ever sees him coming. Genuinely a great villain, but also a great villain because the morality of his character isn't pure evil, there's depth to it. I feel the video captures and chronicles his character better than others I've seen on the subject, maybe goes a little deeper into his motivations. Also, something few people notice - three blue stripes on either arm of his tunic. Gaunter wears Adidas.

Honestly I wonder what itd be like to possess Geralt's body. The dude is relatively old and has been fighting since he was a child. His joints and bones must be in a state. And as someone with chronic pain, you get used to it. You become numb to the pain basically. But a ghost? Suddenly getting sensation back? we are missing a scene where Vlodimir is like Why do your elbows creak?? Why does your knee feel so weird?? What did you do with your ribs?? And Geralt just shrugging

@casualcookin3893 Thats not what chronic pain is. I wish it was. And he has taken a battering over the years. Like with the striga. He was out cold for two days and he has a lot of scars from various other injuries he sustained Fighting monsters man. Itll leave a mark on ya Its also just. Wear and tear on the body. Mutations can do a lot but it cannot remove the ravages of time.

@@elvingearmasterirma7241 Ur speaking like chronic pain is some sort of a magical curse, but its in fact a bodily function that doesent happen to everyone for a reason

@@casualcookin3893 Yea and sometimes that reason is just your body being battered and thrown around due to your profession. this is also me telling you to take care of your body because you really really dont want chronic pain trust me on this

@@casualcookin3893 Also I mean. Chronic pain is one of the closest things we have to a real life curse. I have hypermobility and lemme tell ya it feels like a curse. And Im one of the luckier ones because my joints wont randomly dislocate itself while Im just sitting. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is the universe playing the biggest prank and only the universe finds it funny. Even as Im typing this my left shoulder and my hips are in pain because I slept well. Because no matter what I do, or how many pillows I try to support my joints with, theyre gonna do their hypermobility thing as I fall asleep and my muscles relax. So yea. Curse.

Fab video - usually I stick to elder scrolls lore stuff but I do have a soft spot for the Witcher series and you have a great knack for lore vs narrative which is lacking in some other channels 😉 Don’t know if you write these whole vids out yourself but either way good job

I have seen people try to argue this dude isn't actually evil...no, he is very evil, one look at his actions and you will know it. The only reason Geralt is ever spared from a fate worse than death is because Gaunter thinks Geralt can be of use to him later. He would dispose of him in an instant if Geralt ceased being useful.

My opinion on Gaunter is he's a very powerful demon who wants to see people suffer and derives malicious pleasure in doling it out through wishes. I don't think he's a Djinn he isn't behaving like one. You don't have to rub an object for him to pop up and grant wishes. He seeks out people with a destiny and he tries to prove they're petty, selfish, and rotten. He may even be a connoisseur of suffering created by presenting a seemingly cornucopia of wealth only to really lure them into giving up their soul for trinkets/shiny things. He could be the devil 😈 he certainly seems to be almost all powerful through most encounters with him. Freezing time (at least locally space-wise) storm summoning, burning a sigil of ownership onto a witcher, creating a pocket dimension or maybe making Geralt believe he's in an Upside Down version of reality. Having most answers to any questions, knowing personally intimate details about everyone around him. Obviously most be an ancient being. Yes, he very well is the devil. But I don't think he is God because he is easily banished when he loses the maze/solve-the-riddle but I going to sh*t talk at Geralt about how I will get him another time is what makes me think he's definitely not God. If God of that world wanted to have his way he'd have his way. He wouldn't just be like, "Oh can't get even with you, you solved an easy riddle and a bullshit maze, guess I have to piss off for a bit"🤣
