I grew up driving my 1966 Ford Mustang down Old Route 66. What a blast from the Past. Thank You!

I literally grew up on route 66. In Winslow all 66 traffic went right through town and I remember it well. There was a bustling downtown with many motels, stoplights and constant activity. My babysitter lived on 3rd Steet. A one way street that all west bound route 66 traveled through Winslow. We would be outside for hours skipping around on the sidewalk or sitting on the porch just watching everyone who was driving to LA. We saw famous people's tour busses and all kinds of people and things right in front of us, so close we easily made eye contact with people. Our daycare provider was a strict little old lady of about 70 and she didnt have a car. So she lined us up like a little army, 3 in a row holding hands and we went with her up and down 2nd and 3rd streets to pay her phone bill, her electric bill, shopping at Safeway and Babbits and sometimes Ross Drug, Sears or Wards or Whipples...whatever she needed...there we were. She was no-nonsense and you didnt dare step out of line and our reward for behaving was a ludens cherry cough drop on occasion. But the curiosity of watching the comings and goings of route 66 travelers meant we were never bored and therefore well behaved. When I was 4 I moved into a tiny little house behind Circle K on 3rd Street so then I lived on route 66 for a few years. I fell asleep at night listening to the cars and trains passing by. I wonder what they all thought at the time of our little town. When I was about 8 or 9, I-40 came through and while there are exits to Winslow, route 66 was no more. The downtown area dried up, busy motels closed. A new shopping center was built next to the freeway exit and our town completely changed. Even though I was very young, I have so many wonderful vivid memories just living a small town life on Route 66.

Winslow looks like a nice little town. Been to lots of locations around Arizona but never went to Winslow or at least never stopped there that I can remember. The Petrified Forest is amazing and worth the trip. Thanks for taking us with you on your day trip.

I live there and it’s a nice little town. I moved here from Flagstaff two years ago and Louisiana before that for 22 years. Tired of running from hurricanes down there but Winslow is great for my little family of three.

If you need ideas, the Piccacho petroglyphs are really cool. A pain to get to but once you find them you will be amazed.

Nice trip. I took my new Corvette from Las Vegas area along the famous Rt 66. I took the backway from Flagstaff to Winslow. By Lake Mary to state rt 87. prettier drive, missed the Meteor Crater, have to take the car there one day soon. thanks for the show. I did get my photo standing On The Corner! only thing I thought was missing, was a restroom facility nearby. was able to use the stores facilities, had to ask nice, and left $5 for cleaning ladies. Have ridden most of Rt. 66 on a Harley or Corvette. fun freaking trip!!

Next year, when the Corona-insanity is over, I will visit the USA again, and this time I wanna visit this meteor crater! And all the other beautiful places in Arizona. I have been there twice, one time at Phoenix for business purpose and one time in northern Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon during a vacation. But I wanna see it all! Thank you and greetings to all the beautiful people of Arizona, I´m looking forward to visit you again!

Thank you for this! I have property in sun valley. 1 1/4 on the outskirts of the painted desert and 2 builders plots on the sun valley exit. I am currently looking for septic or alternatives to build a structure. Permits etc. Hoops to jump through but worth it.

It was almost exactly 26 years ago that I drove through and visited this stretch of AZ. Sept 4-5, 1994, as part of my week-long drive cross country moving to CA. Sept 4 I left Albuquerque following Route 66 (and the parallel I-40). Visited Acoma Pueblo, Bandera Volcano and Ice Cave, the Painted Desert, Joseph City, and then stopping for an overnight in Winslow. Didn’t get the chance to visit the Petrified Forest (I need to spend a full day there if it’s open when I visit again this coming late Sept). On Sept 5 I went thru Winona to visit Meteor Crater in the early morning before going to the Grand Canyon for a full day. Then off to Williams, Seligman, Kingman, with an overnight in Needles before heading to my new home on Sept 6 (26 years ago). Sooooo looking forward to my 11-day AZ trip thru much of that same area again (with a 7-day base at Prescott). Thanks for the inspiration, J! 👍🏻😎🌞 Maybe I’ll return to AZ permanently within a year or two. 🤷🏻♂️😉
