Dr. Shungite it’s not 50/50. 50/50 chance implies complete randomness of which it cannot be influenced of any sort. We are dealing with human thought here so you cannot calculate the probability of one using sucker punch, as human thought alters the probability of using a move. For example, statistically speaking, the opponent has a 99% if not , 100% chance of using sucker punch on the first turn as substitute blacephalon is unorthodox. There is no “correct” move, it is completely perceptive and based on what the opponent chooses. There is no “50/50”. It could be higher, it could be lower. -The opponent may have wanted to conserve PP right away considering sucker punch has less PP than substitute. -The opponent may have considered using 5 sucker punches in a row to be unorthodox. Etc. The Statistics here is just too vague. We won’t really know what happens until you run a large simulation and analyse the results. As I said earlier, results are completely dependant on human thought which can change over time and respond to trends.

If you insist purely from a statistical point of view and disregard all variables, there are 4 possible outcomes from 2 pokémon with 2 different moves. -Blacephalon has substitute (SUB) and an attacking move eg. Flamethrower(FT) -Toxicroak has sucker punch (SP) and an attacking move eg. poison jab (PJ) *Beneath are the 4 possible outcomes.* SUB->SP battle continues SUB->PJ Toxicroak wins FT->SP Toxicroak wins FT->PJ Blaspheon wins The scenario can be modelled by an infinite series which each outcome occurring 25% of the time. The probability of blacephalon surviving 3 turns and winning on the 4th turn is: (0.25)^1+(0.25)^2+(0.25)^3+(0.25)^4 = 0.332 or 33%

I don't think that Nightmare would be worth running, even on a sleep-focused gimmick set- the move is atrocious now because of the sleep duration nerf, not to mention Smogon's sleep clause. Because sleep only lasts 1-3 turns now and Nightmare ends on the turn that you wake up, even if you're put back to sleep again on that same turn, I think (but haven't tested) that even going Spore -> Nightmare has a 2/3 chance of failing to do any damage (because your opponent woke up on either the first turn or the second turn).

It might still not be that great of a move compared to other damage over time effects but I'd be willing to bet there's atleast one scenario where it can outshine those
