Flame Grilled Lamb on a Winter Hike | Bushbox XL | The Chilterns

This was my first time using the Bushbox XL, in fact the first time I’ve cooked on any stove other than my usual gas hiking stove. I loved this! It cooked my lamb to perfection, but even if you’re not cooking and just want to have a fire without damaging the ground, this seems to be a top bit of kit. Let me know what you think of yours!

Another enjoyable video Claire. I used to use a fire bowl for static camps or if I was able to get a vehicle close enough but find any naked flame container of fairly limited use for any walking/trekking due to: vagaries of getting it started if not under shelter; carry-in weight of components and fuel and/or axe and of course, there's messiness! But, all that said, you're right you really cant beat the smell or sound of a real flame. Very sweet of you to mention people trying to cope with issues who use the outdoors as therapy....I think to various degrees, we're all in that boat at some point/s during our fragile lives. I for one am regularly in Mother Nature's consultancy room! Stay safe & well.

That lamb looked gorgeous! Nothing better than some flame grilled lamb with lots of rosemary! And eating it outdoors just makes it taste that much better somehow. I was lucky enough to get out for an overnighter with a buddy of mine a couple of weeks ago. I did roasted veggies in a dutch oven and threw a couple of bison steaks on the grill. Up until then, I'd only had bison burgers, (which was delicious) but these steaks were on another level! I kept it simple with just a little olive oil, some kosher salt and pepper. Imagine nice, lean beef with just a whisper of a stronger flavour. SOOO GOOD! We sat around the campfire, cracked a couple of craft beers and ate like kings! I think I'll have to definitely try it again. Thanks for taking us along and showing us the BushBox in operation. I hope you're keeping safe and hopefully your lockdown will be ending soon with the arrival of the vaccine. Hopefully we here in Nova Scotia won't be too far behind you. ATB - Darby 🇨🇦

I love the look of the big bush box, a few years ago I purchased the small one, hard work keeping it burning, it's too small to be of any real use, but, the bigger one, you're using, looks pretty useful.

I too have a bush box xl!..... love love love it. A couple weeks ago I was out in deep (4foot) snow. My bush box was my only way to melt snow and make drinking water! Worked like a camp every time. And I cooked my meals on it too. Totally worth carrying the extra weight!

Hello Claire.. This is what i love doing to. Just going to the freezer and getting something nice. I do that the night before then in morning i grab my cooker water and coffee then off I go. Finding a nice quiet spot near the lakes or river then having a few hours there. I take an old tarp with me just in case it is windy or wet there. I love cooking out when the snow is on the ground in the Winter. I stay a long time there just to watch the wildlife and listen to the birds sing in the early evening. It is sad to go home after but i am not allowed to stay over night as you know.. Regards Mick from Hampshire.. Xx
