Flames of War FTW: How To Deal With Dug In Infantry

A tactic I've used is to advance with Churchill Crocodiles or Wasp flame tanks to rout out the troops, but also to survive the antitank guns that the germans shoudl have in the rear as a layered defense. Also drop a Land Matress bombardment to really ruin their day.

Please explain that lifting gone to ground thing. Can any "scout" unit do that? (Specifically, my Sherman OP.) I've been using him to direct 105mm artillery fire against German infantry but thought they were still dug-in. I don't have any M8 Greyhounds.

If you smoke a enemy and then assault them then the enemy dont get to do any defensive fire if I remember right?

The problem i'm facing here is that as Russians, i don't have any smoke. As long as they manage to dent my platoons enough to lose Quality of Quantity, i can't do much more then try to pin. Katyusha's help but are unreliable. Maybe Pavel is the way to go, then at least i always get to charge, even at ridiculous losses.

Can't fire through own teams. Direct fire smoke is not done right-assingment and placement. Some defending teams would have been able to fire without going through smoke. Range of nebs boggled. Assaulting troops have to be within 2" to hit, not take out any defending teams in the general vicinity. Mortars too close to hedge to do indirect fire. Get your point about tactics but several rule details are played wrong and thus the presentation is counterproductive.

the bailed out shermans wouldn't be captured and destroyed they would still retreat the 2inches because the assult failed. If the assault had taken place and they failed a motivation test then they could be captured and destroyed? I think thats right?

I don't think direct smoke was correct. It is one team smoked per hit. And I would have smoked with the mortars, but then that would have been the very first thing after the recon remove gtg.

I may be wrong but first and foremost smoke has to be fired first, second infantry can not fire through infantry, third the template for bombardment was wrong. In assault you have to be in two inches and line of sight, then the assault fire by panzerfausts is 4 inches so not all could fire. Frankly these guys need to read the rules and although the principles are right the mechanics are wrong. Lift gtg, pin with artillery, use 50 calls from tanks etc.. I am just old but getting frustrated with this series. Pinning mg teams in third edition makes assaults still in on impossible because the roof is only reduced to two. Sorry for being so dull but I prefer 2nd edition rules they are far more balanced.

Mark Landymore I am not 100% sure, but i think smoke bombardmends have to be fired first, before any other shooting (for all units). Direct smoke only needs to be fired first within the firing unit. So you can fire with one unit und then direct smoke with another unit. But shooting the MGs with the "smoking" unit would be after the smoking.

i dont understand the value of this. obliviously 600 points vs 200 points will win, thats not really a shocker. the issue with this strat to deal with that unit, is what are the 400 extra points of Germans doing to the other flank while you use 600 points to tie up only 200 points.

dave yesiam well, the assumption is that these units would be brought into play for this assult but still be available before or later for other tactics. Mortars can be used elsewhere while the infantry advance, likewise the shermans.
