Did no one note the extreme amount of hair on that girl. I thought she was sitting on a fur rug. Once I noticed it, I couldn't unsee it & it was very distracting. Great commentary and insight on the Victorians, Puerto Rico's great buy, and Leighton's demise the day after receiving his earldom. Bizarre.

I don't think it is hair. There is a fabric of a different colour that she is lying in top of.

I live in Cyprus and can confirm that Oleander is highly poisonous when injested. There is a story that tells of women who got fed up with their husbands would use Oleander wood for kebab meat... but it's never been confirmed. 😊 However, it certainly is poisonous. Just discovered your channel - yes, subscribed. 😊

Ponce Museum de Arte is under repair-remodeling. I would contact the musuem to make sure painting is on display. Some art has been temporarily relocated to the US,etc.

I must strongly disagree on the inclusion of the Oleander. It is a strong factor in the composition. Almost creeping into the frame towards the sleeping woman. If it had just been one of many plants in a background I would have an easier time with your explanation. But given that Leighton undoubtedly studied classical art and symbolism, especially considering his use of it in his other works, I find it incredibly difficult to believe that it was included haphazardly. Although, I will qibble with others' assertions of it being a direct link between sleep and death. I see it more of as a warning. As if to waken the sleeping maiden would invite danger. Almost as it it's guarding, or watching over her. Desiring her. Coveting her. Like us as the viewer. And like the snake in the other painting. Do we dare wake her? And potentially invite her firey wrath and anger? Or continue to gaze at her in her beautiful slumber with this nearby undefined danger encroaching? It definitely serves a purpose with it's inclusion. If you changed the type of flower to something else, like grapes or even Ivy it would completely change the feeling and subtext of the composition. Even though there are also many other poisounous flowers to choose from. I still do not think it's inclusion was accidental, or incidental. But these are just my thoughts and opinion as an amateur admirer of art and symbolism. So perhaps I am also slightly biased. I just think it's an incredibly important part of what makes the painting so special.

It's shocking that the Victorians and Pre-Raphaelites were slandered and disgraced by barbarian "modernists" who turned our art markets into a racket, peddling frauds; with some exceptions. The Leighton’s are my family going back to the year 1300 including Wattlesborough Leighton’s. Such unique paintings and a hard worker. He was also friends with the Prince of Wales. Rhoda Leighton is my 4th Great Grandmother ❤❤❤

Its a virtual paraphrase in oils of the opening words of the chorus prologue to Shakespeare's 'Henry the V': 'O for a muse of fire that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention'. 'Flaming June' is Leighton's own 'muse of fire'.

Leighton’s oil sketch for Flaming June (7:58) has just been acquired by Leighton House Museum and will be going on show there from 7th June 2023. If you are ever in that part of London it is well worth a visit.

A very nice appraisal of a wonderful painting. It may have been wiser to mention that the jury is still out on the identity of the model used by Leighton. Some art critics, eg. Martin Postle strongly argue in favour of Mary Lloyd rather than Dene.

He said, "may have been". Which is perfectly adequate. "Wiser" was a poor choice of words.

@@Bowie. Agreed; but it wouldn't have taken an extra second to throw the other name into the ring as an alternative. That's my point. There are only 2 options so why not mention both., Wiki does suggest that "the body of the woman remains a mystery" with the face only being Dene or Lloyd. Actually Mary Lloyd was predominately a hands and face model.
