i think the reason Himmel said it's the way Frieren is, is because Frieren would be happy to see the people around her react to the beauty of the sunrise. She herself wouldn't be able to enjoy it, but by coming with Fern and seeing Fern's reaction, she will enjoy it more than she thought she would've. That's how much Himmel knew her.

I agree. I also think that Fern's commend that Frieren would not be able to see it by herself takes on a double meaning here because not only could she not see it for herself without assistance waking up but she also couldn't see it (appreciated it) without someone to share it with.

9:09 The most beautiful thing about this episode, to me, is how much Heiter & Eisen's love for Frieren is demonstrated in Eisen's conversation here. Reading between the lines, when Frieren cried at the funeral and revealed her regrets to her two long-time friends, they mutually decided to do what they could for her with a nearly 40-YEAR-LONG plan to give her a second chance at connecting with humans on a journey while also using that journey to secure a second chance to talk with Himmel (spoilers for episode 5): 1. They knew the rumor of Aureole in Flamme's notes, so the two of them spent the next 20+ years researching the notes' location. 2. At the end of that time, when the search was nearly completed, Heiter adopted Fern. 3. Shortly after that, Eisen began training his apprentice Stark. 4. Then both of them waited for Frieren to visit, as they knew she would eventually. Heiter tricks Frieren into adopting Fern (which takes 4 years). They wander around for a couple years before Eisen sends her on her mission AND tells her to pick up Stark along the way (been 28 years since Himmel died by this point). 5. In so doing, the two of them socially engineered a near-exact copy of the "mere 10-year adventure" with their younger proxies ALL so that, by the end of the journey (38 years later!) Frieren can resolve all of her regrets from the last friend-filled journey & prove to herself that she can connect with & appreciate humans. Such careful writing is truly a thing of beauty to witness.

In an early episode Fern said that Frieren learned a spell that makes grapes sour. Then last episode in a flashback Eisen said he loves sour grapes. And now we saw Frieren making a spel on the grapes for Eisen. God, I love this anime

Frieren dwarfs live about 300 years, with old ones closing in on 400.

15:26 😊 One should never fear Speaking to the Dead … in fact, We do it all the time. - those nagging voices. - that tug on your sleeve to remind you of something left behind. - the comfort of warm memories around the holidays. Our Human Family has been around for over a hundred thousand years, and its most important lessons are remembered in the Instincts that Save Us from our Weaker Natures. 🥹 goodness, how I love this show.

This story has the same nostalgia as someone going through a photo album, but in this case Frieren is actually travelling to those places and retracing her journey with the heroes party... Hers or people's memories coming up (BEAUTIFUL show).

I love you emme, but i think you missed the reason it was beautiful. Its not that the sunrise is all that special, just like frieren said. Its that she saw it with fern and how it made fern feel. Then frieren got it, why himmel and the others wanted her to see it. Because it would be a memory with them. That they could share together. Still love your reactions!

It's a bit like as an adult when you see a child see something you are very familiar with but its new to them and they are amazed by it. Its the reaction and pleasure of another that you are enjoying. Hence the statement she wouldn't have been able to enjoy it without Fern.

It's not a spoiler because it's essentially not clarified any further from what I read but I estimate Frieren to be around 1300 years old. more than 1000 for sure, and likely less than 1500 because (among other reasons I won't touch upon here), in this very episode she talks about those 10 years being less than 1/100th of her existence, and above 1500/1600 years it would start to make more sense to say close to 1/200th instead. As to why I narrowed it down more than that, it's based on phrasing she uses in other flashbacks and a few clues that we'll discuss later, but it's by no mean a sure thing or anything, it's just an interpretation.

That's a very good estimate. She said the line about "ten years is only 1/100th." of her life back when Himmel was alive when she was around 1300 years old. So sufficed to say, at 10+80 years after Himmel's death, Fieren is now approximately around 1400 years old.

Regarding how quickly time passes in this show: Fern was nine-years-old when we first saw her in, and 13 when she left with Frieren. Ep. 01: 20 Years After Himmel's Death. Fern is 9-years-old. Ep. 02: 24 Years After Himmel's Death. Fern is 13-years-old. Ep. 03: 27 Years After Himmel's Death. Fern is 16-years-old. Ep. 04: 28 Years After Himmel's Death. Fern is 17-years-old.

the thing about an actual journey is that it takes time most animes skips through it. but walking from one town to another takes days if not months. it's also a reflection upon Frieren sense of time a day or month is but a drop in the bucket and flashes right before her eyes the same way.

I think what Frieren does is very admirable, being someone who is not human trying to make the maximum effort to go against her own nature so that the rest of humans feel a little less uncomfortable with her. It must be very difficult to live surrounded by, literally, an entire world that cannot understand you.

You missed the point about the sunrise. Himmel knew that she would enjoy it because she would see the joy in her companions. That's why she you wouldn't have enjoyed it without Fern. Not just because she couldn't wake up early.

Frierens age should be somewhere between 1100 and 1350. Which is considered young for her race, also she shows signs similar to girl going through puberty at times, which might indicate her being in what might be a similar phase in an elves development.

as big as himmels and Flammes impact on frieren had been... the impact of fern on frieren seems to be even bigger. it is just not that obvious.
