Hi Julie. I have a handicap card and I use mine when I am in pain or don't feel well and walking hurts or is a struggle. On the days I feel ok I don't use it. As far as what people would say when I'm sick its obvious. Our doctors don't want you to struggle so they can easily say yes to this card. The government, in my experience, don't care one way or another. This doesn't mean you are handicapped. It means it is help on those days you need it. Today I need it. Much love and Gods blessing. License department folks shouldn't question if your doctor says you need it. The state has diagnoses that qualify for permanent tags. Otherwise there are temporary ones. I don't think considering yourself handicapped is helpful. As you say, you are living with a chronic illness. As a side note, some airports allow people with handicapped tags to park in short term parking at long term parking rates.

Thanks, it's a lot to take in, it so helps to have friends like you to give perspective. Didn't know about the parking benefit!

I can only speak for PDX, and they don't advertise it, so it pays to ask.
