I was 18, lived at home and enjoyed my life. I miss that America and how you didn't need to work 2 jobs to rent a mediocre apartment, the American dream of owning a home was attainable to the majority of people and you didn't have to take out an 8 year loan to buy a new car. What the heck has happened to this world.

I realize your question is probably rhetorical, but I'm going to answer it anyway... the restraining power of the Holy Spirit is being slowly withdrawn from the earth and humanity is being left to the evil they have chosen. "And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man..." (Genesis 6:3).

"Sex, Drugs, Rock and Brew; we're the Class of '82 !" Ha ha, I'm your age. RE: Your rhetorical question; several things happened. First; remember the USA basically ruled the world from 1945-1975, meaning the first 30 years after WWII. The hangover effect (in a positive way) was still largely in effect in 1982. Now; well, decreased communication and transportation cost have made it so U.S. workers are competing 1-to-1 with workers across the globe. This includes people who will labor 12 hours a day for a decent place to live, some rice/vegetables, and a leftover $100 per month. Second; the "Information Age" widens the income disparity. Meaning technology allows an attorney or financial analyst to become 5X-10X more productive than before; while it does essentially nothing for something flipping burgers, cleaning homes, or digging a ditch by hand. Finally, and I'm far right wing so I am NOT a government conspiracy person, but finally.... Our tax laws changed so that wealthy people benefitted a great deal; exaccerbating the impact of the technological revolution. End result; highly polarized income growth, along with highly disparate net worth. There is vastly less in the way of a middle class. On the positive side, a good chunk moved up the foodchain. Conversely; those without educations or a true skill fell further down the foodchain. Personally; I have an undergrad in Acctng (along with a minor in Aero Engineering) and an MBA with a focus on Int'l Finance. I retired from the Fed last year, and my retirement gig is with a major bank. That's about what it takes to be on the upside of the massive societal shift(s) of the past 40 years. Meaning since we graduated back in May of 1982. XO and Good Luck !

At that time the longest you could get for most cars was 5 years or 60 months. Banks felt that the longer the terms on a depreciating asset wasn't a good idea but the yuppies changed their minds later in the decade with their 7 year Beemer loans.
@ButcherBird-FW190D
@ButcherBird-FW190D 2 жыл бұрын
@@alancarnell2747 Somewhat valid; but note that cars were lasting longer as well. Made some sense. But yeah, I just recall my old step-pappy (born in 1920) complaining over the "Unbelievably long 48-month car loan" my Mom took out for her 1978 Volvo. He was just so shocked. Then, early-80's the loans hit a staggering 60 months. Now, the average is 76 months.

I loved the 80’s, because no Cell Phones, Computers, and my Children grew up outdoors riding bikes and exploring. All my children’s friends would come to our home and play outside, and we had a basketball goal, and ping ball table in our basement. My friends would come to my home and visit and we would have coffee and socialize. I had a phone on the kitchen wall and on a table at my bedside. I gave my son a telephone for his room when he was 13 and stereo system with turn table and speakers for his bedroom. He told me years later he was the most popular in his Class at School, cause he had a phone and stereo system in his room. And we survived and my children survived without a cell phone in there pockets at all times.

I was 12 years old in 1982, and I can relate to your recounting of how things were back then. The above video with its references to TV shows, music albums, and news headlines has very little or even nothing to do with how each of us experienced that year. The video is not actually about life in America, even though it claims to be.

I remember when we'd meet at a friend's house, you would see our bicycles laying in the front yard, so you'd know who was over. We would play outside and recreate Star Wars, Battle of the Planets, or just whatever crossed our minds. And of course, we did play Atari 2600, but video games were just another thing in the box, it didn't dominate our activities.

Lol people are such hypocrites. There's no way in hell you would go back to 1982 if you couldn't have your cell phone and you would be just the way you are kids are today without it. I don't know why so many adults s*** all over the current generation when they would do just the same as if they grew up in this generation as others

Outstanding, my Brother ! My first car was a massive, honking 2-door 1970 Olds 98. 455 4-barrel. Gas was $1.35 per gallon (~$4 today) and she got 8-13 mpg. That was at age 16 in 1980. Uhm, yeah..... Filling up was painful; but the old dog was only $500 so..... Had a good high school job netting $7 an hour (about $20 today) so I could swing it..... But, yeah. Drove that old dinosaur for two years until it just couldn't go any further. Best investment I ever made.

Randy Rhoads was killed in an airplane prank accident gone wrong on March 19, 1982, in Leesburg, Florida. He was only 25 years old. He was a phenomenal guitarist in Ozzy Osbornes’ band. He had just decided to leave Ozzy, after the Blizzard of Oz tour, to go to college to major in music, and play classical guitar. It happened about 25 miles from where I live. Sad day.

I've always considered 1982 as my favorite year. It was the year I graduated from elementary to junior high, saw my first R rated movie (Private Lessons) first time I've ridden a roller coaster, first time I fell in love ❤ with a girl in my class and got my fist kiss 💋. And got my very first game console for Christmas (the Atari 2600) in which I officially considered myself a gamer. Because you can't really call yourself a gamer until you've brought and owned at least one game console hooked up to your TV. Even in the 80's.

Also in 1982: Paul Lynde and Will Lee (Mr. Hooper from Sesame Street) died. North Carolina won the 1982 NCAA Men's basketball championship. Michael Jordan was a freshman on that team. Daryl Hall and John Oates released the album "H2O". It had the hits "Maneater" and "One on One". The First CDs were produced in Germany. USA Today was founded. "Silver Spoons" premiered on NBC "Taxi" got cancelled by ABC, but picked up by NBC shortly after that. "Joanie Loves Chachi" premieres on ABC.

Tron was released July 9, 1982 and was the first major film to combine extensive CGI with live action. It was denied an Academy Award nomination for best visual effects because the Motion Picture Academy felt at that time using CGI was "cheating". The movie went on to have a cult following and a sequel, Tron Legacy was released 28 years later in 2010.

Was 6 years old, remember playing outside with my friends from the neighborhood, riding bicycle and exploring, without a care in the world. It was a considerably poorer era from a materialistic point of view, but nevertheless people seemed happier and had a more optimistic view on the future. The 1980's was an exciting and unique decade to grow up in, often miss those times.

1982 was a great year, ASIA released their debut album and was a huge success! John carpenter released a updated version of THE THING, it has become a classic but unfortunately at the time, the good Alien/ E.T. overshadowed the bad Alien. HILL STREET BLUES & ST. ELSEWHERE were huge hits on TV. ROCKY III, BLADE RUNNER, FIRST BLOOD and FAST TIMES AT RIDEMONT HIGH and many more classics were released in 82 at the movies.

Turned 16 in 1982 and was supposed to have a huge party but an ice storm killed that. AirFlorida's crash due to ice build-up on the wings -- THE reason I will not fly during the winter. Thankfully, I never had a job that required travel and I don't travel much for personal reasons. April snowstorm -- we had at least two feet of snow on Long Island and I was thrilled to be out of school for a few extra days. We had a fire at home after the snow stopped falling. It was caused by my brother's gloves sitting on top of our kerosene heater when he turned it on. THAT was a mess. The fire department was less than a mile away and had great response time so that helped a lot. E.T. phone home ... great movie! The only troubling thing was why the Mom left little Gertie home alone when she went to the school to pick up Elliot. What was she ... four? five? Something my Mom would never have done. Could be because she was raised in the Bronx and, in the 1970s when NYC had soaring crime rates, we lived in Queens. Family Ties and Cheers ... two of my favorite shows that year. The summer was great that year ... tons of time at the beach and lots of parties. Wish I could go back to those days. Much simpler time.

Growing up in rural Alaska I think my mom might have left me home alone for a few minutes if needed. At 4 I was riding my horse with a friend all day long miles away from home. But that was in the 60s.

@chayastaub-krell6601 2 жыл бұрын
@@KMF3 I think Alaska had a much lower crime rate than NYC 😉. Still does. Our neighborhood had lots of drugs and gangs moving in which drove us out to Long Island. We were fortunate to be able to move when we did. It became dangerous to live there in the late 70s and 80s.

Before the Tylenol product tampering incident, OTC products didn't have tamper-proof packaging. That incident caused manufacturers to create tamper-proof packaging for all their products, which of course we still have today.

The biggest thing I remember about 1982 is that I met my future husband in October. It was the BEST thing that ever happened to me! I really wasn't impressed by ET. This was also one of the years when I didn't watch ANY commercial TV. I only watched PBS. I lived about 10 miles from where the Tylenol killer lived. So tragic.

I didn't watch much TV back then because I was in the Military and didn't have much time for it, but I do know Newhart started in 1982 and was a major hit, with I think a seven season run. Although I didn't have time for it back then, I bought all the DVDs and enjoy watching it today.
