An interesting piece of foreshadowing in this scene: everyone talks in Alice in Wonderland references throughout the movie; follow the white rabbit, the rabbit hole, the mirror itself. However, Cypher drops a Wizard of Oz reference here, which implies that he's the odd one of the group and later ends up being the traitor. Intentional or not, I think it's a great detail.

I never realized this but the mirror aspect of this scene follows the reverse Alice in Wonderland motif of the movie where, instead of going through the looking glass and traveling to a fantasy world, the looking glass travels into Neo’s body and wakes him up from the dream world into the real world.

Lots of people talk about the action and groundbreaking visual effects, but if you ask me, what really made this movie so special was the storyline, the mysteriousness, the incredibly well defined characters, the dialogue that's pure perfection, the acting, the steady, deliberate incredibly artfull cinematography, (no b.s. shaky cam nonsense and every frame is an art piece that communicates a story) the music (which is near perfection) and overall atmosphere and vibe. The action and visual effects were simply the icing on an already outstanding masterpiece.

I think it may be for disposal when humans die of old age. The other is a sprinter who pushes himself past his physical limit during a race and unintentionally unplugs himself. Funny thing is that humans become truly "self aware" when they first realise that their reflection in a mirror is not real. In a way, this scene where Neo's reflection in the mirror getting distorted is a way of saying that he's truly become self aware as he wakes up, since his reflection isn't actually real, but just the Matrix all along.

Actually, the Matrix has many ties to Christianity. This scene depicts when a man is born-again. Neo was always alive (but only naturally) just like how most people in the world are always alive but only in the flesh. However, in order to see things as they really are, by the Spirit of God, a man must be born-again as Jesus puts it in John 3. Only then is a man awakened and has past from death unto life.

This scene is an example of spectacular cinematics and plot writing. You can see the confusion in Neo's face upon hearing the bizarre answer Morpheus gives him about the "pill" that he swallowed. I also like the point where Neo's carrier signal connecting his brain to the Matrix begins to be disrupted resulting in him receiving conflicting signals that result in his mind to drift in and out of the world of The Matrix and the Real World hence the cracks in the mirror disappearing then covering Neo's body after he touches it, reflecting his surroundings, while giving him odd sensations such as that "cold" feeling.

In their small, 2 shelves movie section mixed with CD's and kitchen stuff there was a small, 5-inch TV playing this movie, and the wake-up sequence gave me chills and my legs were shaking - but not from fear. I remember this scene so clearly and it stuck with me for over 12 years when I finally got to see the whole movie.
