Condolences! But, yet again an assume video! Please keep us updated on these upgrades and advances. They look great!! The best upgrades seems to be upgraded every year. This is a Great thing happening !! But what about the guy that upgraded 3 years ago? It would even more great (bad grammar) If there was a hardware unit that can do everything on the hardware side that is possible were made, with as little needed internal and external modifications (for each platform 400, 800,1200XL, etc) so we have a Standard. Then it is just a mater of software upgrades. We are getting close to this with U1Mb and Side3, side of things (pun intended). Then there is the Stereo Pokey, Rapidus, etc., and video output. Hopefully these can be Standardized. Yes it is a hobby, that we all have fun with. But I think we are starting to fork like android did at their mid-start. Just saying...... I am not against this, keep on innovating !! KL

Some kind of 'standardisation' is appealing to me too, and this is one thing I like about Candle's approach: he is such a prolific designer, that he is able to make many different devices work together cooperatively. Likewise, having broadly similar hardware on multiple devices makes it easier for me to port firmware from one device to another, and to make the user interface and APIs totally compatible. This is a crucial phase, though: since I am (this time) involved in firmware design while the hardware design is being finalised, I can help the hardware designer to envision things from a software perspective. The hope is that - as a result - I will not hit 'brick walls' when attempting to exploit the hardware via software improvements.

I've got quite a few U1MB machines each with his own Side2, and several Incognito 800's. These new iterations of the Side and Ultimate 1meg are incremental improvements on really great upgrades. I don't feel in the slightest need of Side3 or a newer U1MB; not to replace the ones I've got. If I upgrade a new machine I'll buy the new version hardware most likely. Certainly the cartridge emulation feature of Side3 is quite nice. I have an AVG cart which, ironically, I use almost entirely in that mode, emulating a Side2 (Yeah, I know, but it really can do that, FJC firmware and all). If I had a side3, what would I emulate? ;-)

@@Technoid_Mutant For me, the most interesting features of SIDE3 (now we have the beta loader) are the FAT file management facilities and the FAT-based DOS which is loaded when you run an XEX. That presents some interesting opportunities for software which wants fast read/write access to GBs of storage using standard CIO calls without relying on bootable disk image support, and using a file system which is 100 per cent compatible with PCs and Macs, with no need for disk image containers.

@@flashjazzcat I gather there is fat16 WRITE fcnctionality? I have wished for that with Side2 and INcognito. It would come in handy to move data between the Atari and the Pea Sea. Presently there's no way to copy a file out of an sdfs partition onto a filesystem the peasea can natively read. Copy, rename, delete, those would be nice features to have in Fat16/32. I know the Commies have writeable fat 16.

@@Technoid_Mutant FAT16 and FAT32 writes, yes, as well as CIO functions for directory creation, deletion, changing attributes and time/date stamps, etc. I just used the facility while Candle and I were debugging a new JED for SIDE3. I wrote a simple tool to dump memory from $8000-$BFFF so that we could perform forensics on a loaded cartridge image. The dump was written direct to FAT32 and I was able to drag the file straight into HxD on the PC.

I just picked up an Atari 800XL. The Atari was my first computer. I am absolutely blown away by how versatile the machine is and by the diversity of products that continue to be released. It’s incredible. My Macintosh collection is going to be jealous very quickly. Atari was my first true love and it doesn’t fail to impress. Wow!

Wow! Just stumbled onto this video. Really impressive new stuff! Especially the "merger" of Ultimate 1Mb and SIDE3 are a very logical and very welcome next step. Indeed: I am one of those who has been eagerly awaiting this - I have got a SIDE2 and some other Lotharek goodies, but I never felt happy removing ROMs and bending sally's legs for soldering to install the U1Mb - Really good stuff, I can't wait to get my hands on one of those!

My guess for the USB connector on the XL version of External U1MB is really plebian; Power for the 800xl. Only the 600xl has 5volts on the PBI, so the device will be externally powered on the 800xl. 'Course you can add 5volts to the PBI, but that entails working inside the machine, and since that very thing is why the External versions exist, Candle in his wisdom has supplied this handy usb jack for power. (Yeah, a usb controller WOULD be cool).

So strange, was listening in the car TODAY, to your interview on Antic podcast from (I think) 2014 ! :-) Veteran here, looking to get back into 8-bit Atari - if you have any suggestions on how to get hardware, plus perhaps some upgrades installed before shipping to Australia, that would be great! My original setup (in the UK) was an 800XL, 1050, 1020, 1010 and TV of course, all installed in my bedroom cupboard with a pull-out wooden tray (fancy!) for the computer itself, so I wasn't 3 inches from the TV screen!

It's possible to modify the SIDE3 hardware to work with the 'Wing', but you won't get things like 8MB of SRAM, and I don't yet know if the 3.1 functionality will absolutely depend on this chip capacity. And yes: my parents are now together for eternity (whether they like it or not). ;)

Yeah it seems like SIDE 3.1 is more for XEGS, 1200XL and 400/800 except it will only (barely) readily fit in the XEGS.

I should have made it clearer that the XL and XE versions of the External U1MB are functionally identical. If you want what's currently offered by U1MB+SIDE3, but greatly improved, it would be better to purchase the External U1MB. I have no idea regarding pre-orders; we're not quite at that stage yet. I expect, though, that - like SIDE3 - there will be no pre-order, and these device will simply go on sale commercially in unlimited quantities once they are ready.

@@gamedoutgamer Internal U1MB+SIDE3 (or 3.1) still remain the most powerful option for the PBI-less machines (XEGS and 1200XL), precisely because the 'wing' will still not work with them. Incognito 3 and Incognito lite will basically be External U1MB for the 800 and 400 respectively.

There's a facility to add a secondary cart, so I imagine that if you first attach the SDX cart type, then a secondary cart, that should work. Other than that, the easiest way is to set up U1MB in emulation, and then just add carts in the normal manner. This will be functionally identical to having the old SDX cart plugged in.
