Claire Locke is pitching her range of personalised children's underwear. Claire's 'Smarty Pants' has found itself at a standstill due to Claire's own mental barriers... when Doug begins to question her marketing strategy - it becomes clear that she's in desperate need of business mentoring. The investment Claire's seeking is £150,000 in return for a 25% equity stake.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

So let me get this straight. She came up with a not very impressive idea, then made a mediocre design and ordered 180.000 units of 'em with no idea how to pay for it. She somehow managed to spend 15k during this time (no idea where the money went) without even having something like a warehouse to run her operations from. She hasn't done any market research, she hasn't done any branding, marketing, or selling, all while she's on government hand-outs? And to make things even worse, she crumbles at the slightest bit of critique and starts crying. Come on now, she must be one of the least investible people I've ever seen.

From the BBC website 😊: "Claire left the den without investment and when we last saw her she had moved to new premises to accommodate her stock. The children's range of Smarty Pants sold well at country shows and Claire took the business to the next level, opening a shop in Sheffield's Meadowhall centre. Claire declares "the whole of Sheffield's got their name on their pants!" Unfortunately Smarty Pants were caught in 2007's floods but Claire has a positive outlook for the future. Having successfully delivered small print runs for large companies in Yorkshire she has opened a second shop in Doncaster, hoping for a third in time to make the most of Christmas trade. Claire's been busy expanding her personalised printing business and has seen a steady growth in turnover despite the recession. Keeping her prices low and service high, Claire has been welcoming return custom, particularly from students. With the mantra "pennies make pounds" Claire continues to work towards her ultimate goal of a concession stand in Topshop's flagship store."

As of 2021, the business is still trading 16 years after the initial appearance on the show. The last year saw profits of almost 100k, turning an accumulated deficit of 13k into accumulated profits of 85k over the life of the business. While that would have made for a poor investment for the dragons at 150k for 25%, at least Claire has managed to maintain profitability even if not particularly stellar.

Another issue, not dealt with here, is the personalisation. I assume the names are stitched on by the manufacturer in India. So if she's ordered 180,000 units, what names has she picked out and how many of each name has she ordered? My name was kind of common in the UK in the mid 80s to mid 90s, but I very, very, rarely see anything that is already personalised and on the shelf with my name on in places like Clinton's, W H Smith's or T J Hughes, these days. I have to go to Studio or eBay to get my name personalised on items.
