Flat Coated Retriever - Manners training

Thank you very much for this video. I’ve just adopted a flat coat retriever being transported here Saturday. The foster says he’s this breed though their website says mixed breed. He’s 4 and they say 45 lbs so seems smaller than a full breed. But the videos they’ve sent, he looks & seems to act just like one. He was boarded with a dozen other foster dogs and don’t think he’s received much training, so wish me luck! He’s coming from Texas to Oregon. 🐶❤️

Lovely calm force free training. The way all professional trainers should work ;-) At the end you'll have an obedient dog with lovely manners and won't have broken his spirit in the process :-)

This made me very happy seeing he is one is years old with these problems and able to fix them. My FCR is 9 months rn and she has energy like no other. When people come around she just forgets training and starts jumping and licking faces. Not exactly cute anymore considering shes like 60 pounds , ill take this approach next time😂

Great work. Corbyn did so well. Unlike the other people in the park, completely oblivious to you doing some training. You were obviously training and they just allowed their dogs to run up to you and drag them over to you on lead. I have this problem all the time (I am training my dog for similar problems) - I find it very frustrating. I know it's up to me to train my dog, but a bit of understanding and co-operation from other people would sometimes be nice. :( Another great video though.

I've tried these long leads and find them a nightmare, always getting tangled. Is there a drawback for using an extendable lead for this type of training?

yes, they keep tension on the dog because they are spring loaded, they neither teach good lead walking or mimic off lead walking, they only allow you to use one hand for lead handling because if you use too it will cut your hand up, they don't offer, good control. I could go on. Flexi leads have no real training application, long lead handling skills need to be practiced like anything else.

I am looking to get a flat coat (first dog together with partner but I grew up with a flattie). I am really keen to train manners and manage recall/engagement from day one. Would this early training improve behaviour later on in life?

Hi Katie, all early training if done appropriately affects future behaviour. It helps to think of training as a lifelong endeavour rather than getting to a stage where your dog is "trained".

@@GlasgowDogTrainer thanks for your reply! Yes I will be training with positive reinforcement and I know that flat coats are quite sensitive so absolutely no need to raise your voice with them. Our previous flat coat was generally brilliant but he had poor recall and he tended to pull on the lead so these are things I am really going to focus on more than anything with our flat coat puppy and hopefully they have better manners as adult dogs. But like you say, training is lifelong and I hope repetition and consistency helps. In dreading the teenage stage where they revel though!

What a bizarre comment. It wasn't a pitbull, the dog didn't have a biting history, beagles human allowed the interaction and I have zero clue what "bad behaviour" you think is being reinforced here.
