An overview of my technique for embossing card stock with a Cricut Explore or Maker. This is a stencil based technique that produces flat embossing (as opposed to line embossing). To follow along with this demo, open this Cricut Design Space file on your computer
design.cricut.... If you are having trouble opening the file, try this alternate link community.cricu...
for more information please visit cleversomeday.com/cricutflatemboss. Followup video • Cricut Embossing Prep ... Update: Offset can now be done in Design Space so third party software is no longer necessary.

I did a quick try of this tonight. Extremely cool. Thanks for reminding me of it. It's actually one of the reasons I bought a Cricut...then forgot all about it. Omg... I LOVE listening to you. I'm so jealous of your voice. I have spasmodic dysphonia, and embarrass myself to death every time I open my mouth. What I wouldn't give to have a normal voice again. : ) You're awesome to do such detailed tutorials of such creative projects. Thank you so much!

I only just found you today and I'm beyond thrilled! I have been thinking about doing this with my Maker for quite a while. I watched your video, downloaded the file, watched the video as I performed the steps, and it worked! My printer won't take 110 lb card stock so I will print and cut two from lighter card stock and stick them together around the peremeter and around the design. I think that should work. Thank you very much for posting this tutorial. It is very easy to follow and understand. I look forward to making my own designs and embossing them for cards! Again, thank you!

Thanks so much for this, I was struggling to get it all to line up when working on a print then cut project. This worked really nicely. My own riff on it: I wanted to use kraftboard for my stencil, but unfortunately my printer wouldn't print on it as it's too thick, so I printed on normal paper, then sprayed the back with adhesive then stuck the two together. Worked like a charm.

Just wanted to say think you and I am using this technique on a fairly complex holiday card. I am using the method with the printed rectangle as the register - making 125 have to replace the stencil from time to time but the registration really works! Very cool thanks for teaching us. A little tip I never could figure out how to draw the registration border in design space, once I drew it in illustrator along with the other artwork all was good.

Great video and explanation and thanks for adding how things were done in the "old days". It all makes more sense. I have the Maker and had a lot of trouble with the stylus popping out or tearing the 80gsm paper. From your explanation, it gave me the confidence to try some other options to get the result I needed. I eventually got a great result by changing project to Deboss Tip and only debossing once on 216gsm paper. My stencil was also 216gsm as 300 gsm wouldnt go through my printer. The fish is a bit tacky to the touch from the mat (blue mat) on the embossed side but I guess that is to be expected. It's funny, when i was watching it, I was expecting the stylus or deboss tip to go backwards and forwards to "fill in" the areas but of course it just does the outline. . The magic of the stencil allows the paper to match up with the outline! Genius! Thanks again for making this video, you have opened up a whole new world for me and feel like I have learnt a lot.

There is a limit to the thickness of stencil that can be used without tearing the paper.

Yes, I have done a newer video that shows using the Maker with the debossing tip. 216 gsm should work fine, especially with the debossing tip that has a shallower dwell anyway.

O-M-G!!! I have wanted to be able to do this with the Cricut for years because you can design and make some very elegant note cards and other stationery. I can partially see the one you have done with the monogram - LOVE IT! I bet you can also make the stencil with the plastic stencil blanks you can buy from Joanns. I also wonder if you can get a deeper embossing by gluing 2 layers of card stock together and then setting up the Cricut to cut it twice, or if that might be too deep and tear the card stock. Once I dig my Cricut out of storage I think I might do some experimenting.
@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 6 жыл бұрын
The paper tearing is the limiting factor. You can try different media for both the stencil and the blank to get the optimum for what you are doing. I use plastic on the Curio technique but to do that on the Cricut is more complicated because you have to print. It is already double cutting, but you could also try more passes. Tons of variables you can fiddle with. I would love to see what you come up with!

Hi- I was wondering if we could create the file using chipboard instead of the 110 lb. cardstock?
@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe. The criteria are that it has to be cuttable, printable and a color that the Cricut can read marks sensor marks clearly from (white for Explore, wider range of colors for Maker). If the material for the stencil is too thick the card stock being embossed will tear.
@creativediva52
@creativediva52 6 жыл бұрын
I wonder if we could "hack" the chipboard by adhering a frame of white paper with sensor marks?
@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, as I mentioned, you can layer media, and this is what I do with various plastics such as Michaels plastic poster board. However, chipboard may be too thick to not cause the card stock to break when embossed. It really depends on how thick the chipboard is.

@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind comment! If printer doesn't accept heavy card stock, there are several options. My first recommendation would be to use printable magnet stock. That's more expensive, though, so another alternative is so print on full sheet sticker paper and then stick that on top of heavy card or poster board. You could also print on plain paper and attach with spray glue or xyron.

I do not use print and cut, so the weight of the cardstock is not an issue. Place and attach prepared image to a template you create to you specs in DS, hiding the scoring images when cutting, then hiding the cut image when scoring. Works very well for me, offers larger area for embossing, and is flexible, should you want to create a different template shape later.

O cool so that takes the place of all the hand embossing tools and machines one can just do all the embossing things in cricut. The only issue i am worried about is it won't get the depth or 3d look as the other embossing specific tools ? humm not sure that be way cool. Seen it done with embossing a couple thin copper metal sheets to in cricut .

This process works exactly the same on Maker if you have a scoring stylus (choose Edit Tools to pick stylus instead of scoring wheel, which will be default). If you have a scoring wheel, it still works the same except you would choose Deboss from the operation type menu (instead of Score).

@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 6 жыл бұрын
You can not use this stencil emboss technique on leather, but you should be able to do a direct emboss on leather with the scoring stylus or other tools provided the leather is thin enough to fit under the Explore's rollers. I do not know of any tutorials doing this on an Explore, but I do know that a lot of Curio users are doing this and the process should be similar, so I would check for Curio leather embossing tutorials and then see if you can translate that over to the Explore.

You can't adjust the thickness of lines in DS. You can, however, slice one rectangle from an offset that is set to the desired line thickness. Keep in mind that a complete rectangle is not stencil friendly, though, as it will have trapped white space.

@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 2 жыл бұрын
In this technique, we use the print then cut sensor to precisely position the embossing over the stencil. At the time it was the only way to do that but this technique has been updated (see newer videos on my channel) because we can now keep the mat loaded. You would still use print then cut to make a reusable stencil.

@@cleversomeday Thank you for your (prompt) response. Yes, I subsequently found your newer video. So I can skip the PRINTER portion and just do everything with my Cricut Maker 3? I'm confused, if I don't want to use your fish how do I use my own image and get the rectangles around the image. I wish you had showed how to do this by taking an image from your images in DS and showed us from there. I don't know how to get to the point you are starting from. I brought in an image but not sure how what to do next. Sorry, I'm a newbie at this. Thanks for any help you can give.

If you could do this entirely in DS then I certainly would have shown that. It can only be prepared in 3rd party software, which I show in the followup video.

I place then attach my prepared image* on a template I create in DS, hiding the images for scoring when cutting, then hiding the cut image when scoring. This method is a work around for using print and cut, allows for a larger area to be embossed, and is flexible should you want to place the image on a different template later. * The "prepared image" is a set of 3 images created in any vector graphic software. Inkscape has worked well for me, is available online for free, has a terrific online manual, and many tutorials on KZbin. Hope that helps.

Hi! I love this tutorial, thank you so much. I am wondering if the stylus is only able to "outline" or if it is actually embossing the entire stencil area. I was trying to do a simple shape, following your amazing instructions, but then the stylus was only outlining the shape. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how I can make it "fill" the shape (emboss the entire shape, not just the outline of it). Thanks again!
@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 2 жыл бұрын
Getting an outline is easy, and doesn't take a special tutorial. The whole point of my method is to give you a flat embossed area as shown in the samples. If you are following the video exactly and only getting an outline you may have a mismatch between the A and B sides of your machine. You can compensate for the mismatch by shifting the draw layer; or switch to a B side tool like the foil tool. This is covered in my newer embossing video.

@@cleversomeday Thank you for such a fast reply! I am following the directions of this video because I have a Cricut Explore 3 which doesn't have the debossing tool, so I am trying to do it with the stylus like you showed in the original video. Whenever I select "score" on the offset layer, it shows the dotted outline and I'm not sure how to get it to be filled even though the file is a filled file. Does that. make sense? I really want it to have the full flat embossed look but it seems to only outline.
@cleversomeday
@cleversomeday 2 жыл бұрын
@@laurenjoygreen there is no fill in the file itself. The "fill" or flat area is created on the cardstock by the pressure of the stylus bearing against the cut edge of the stencil below it. If you aren't getting a flat area when you remove the piece at the end, then it is because the score line is not lining up with the stencil edge underneath it (wrong position wrong size or both).

Can I use me debossing tip to score?
@kdiannestephens5546
@kdiannestephens5546 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your video. It is very nice. I am wondering the function of doing the method as a print and cut. Maybe I am missing something, and am very open to understanding. As for myself, as a test, I doubled common cardstock using a repositionable glue stick, cut (vs. print and cut) the choosen image at the poster board setting , removed from the Cricut, and weeded. I then changed the original image to score. I put a single sheet of common carstock on top of the cut doubled common cardstock, again using a repositionable glue stick, clicked "make it". The machine scored right over the stencil. For a stencil I wanted placed at a specific location on the doubled common cardstock (for example, to position it for a greeting card), attach the image where desired on a sized rectangle shape. When cut and weeded, go back, detach, change the image to score, attach, then "make it". My test worked, however the embossed area was not as deep as I would like. I have also used craft foam attached with repositionable glue stick, and merely scored an image directly on cardstock that I also used repositionable glue stick. The small rollers must be moved for this method as they will leave an imprint using the craft foam method. Mirroring the image to be cut, and then scored can be helpful in certain circumstances.

Very good question. The sensor marks are used to ensure precise placement of the tool with respect to the stencil every time and give you a stencil that is reusable even after you remove it from the mat. Positional error when just reloading the mat in the machine tends to be about +/- 1 mm, which in my experience was not precise enough for consistent, deep embossing results. (At the current time, you can not change your file in Design Space and re-run it without unloading the mat.) Direct embossing with a soft mat is the usual method for embossing with a diecutter. It is simple and effective for vellum and thin metals, but most people are not satisfied with that method for embossing card stock with the Cricut Explore series. The additional blade side pressure of the Maker may be a solution to this, but remember that this still produces line embossing, not flat, folder-look embossing.
@kdiannestephens5546
@kdiannestephens5546 6 жыл бұрын
I see! You are using the sensor marks as a guide. I am using/keeping the usual "throwaway" frame created by the cut-perfectly fitting my stencil into it for the reload to do the scoring. I have found many times I do not need to remove the stencil from the mat,, instead I remove the negative space..weeding. BTW - using craft foam for direct embossing a prepared image using just the 2 scoring images creates a decent result. Many ways to skin a cat!!!!! :-) Love it!!

Oh yes, I tried you method. It works perfectly. My method produces the same embossed result, albeit more flexible as I mentioned, in that my method is not limited to the print and cut sizing, weight, and color of the material to be embossed or the material the stencil is made from, since I am bypassing a printer, and the print and cut limitations. Additionaly, one can easily create different sized and shaped templates, created in DS, to act in place of the print and cut "lines". I did move into adhering 3 layers to be cut, if using standard weight cardstock for the stencil. The SVG with it's inset/offset images is the key to great embossing with the Cricut!! Many ways to skin a cat!! Great video.
