The proper way to secure a container on a flatbed

Without at least one twist, on each side of the container, the strap will vibrate like crazy and tend to cut on the slightest rough edge. Also never wind more than 3 or 4 layers of strap on winch. Excess strap is pulled through winch slot, leaving a bit of slack, excess strap is folded in more/less 18" lengths, tucked between wrap on winch and length of strap going over load. This insures that the strap is tensioned and not coming loose. Winding layer after layer of strap on winch can never be tightened enough. Especially if it is wet or semi frozen. Also on removal...a frozen strap is more easily removed by unfolding those 18" lengths rather than trying to unwind multiple layers off winch. Also when storing straps between loads...either remove them and store in dry place or hook to rubrail and do the 18" lengths. 34 years of doing this way...48 states and all of Canada...no issues.

I don't think a twist in a strap hurts anything. In fact some drivers do it on purpose to eliminate wind flapping!

Did he say “you’re good for 80,000 pounds with one of these chains “? A 3/8” grade 7 chain is rated at 6600 WLL.

1. Tear drop the chain around the pocket. 2. Crossed chains CANNOT touch. 3. Never store your straps on the winches - traps moisture and causes them to rust out which you won't notice if the strap is not removed. 4. Throw the roll of the strap, not the steel end. Prevents damage to the load and other drivers. 5. Put a twist in the strap - if you don't know why, then stick to rubberbands and pieces of paper and leave trucking to those who know.

You can not hook on the pocket as the little pcs of aluminum is Not raided for 5400 lbs,the holl pocket is when you hook back in the chain. Also chains can Not touching eath other as rubbing Will cause damage on the chain

Good video but its go to have a twist in your straps always on tall loads it keeps them from vibrating.

container locks are about standard on open trailers here, many places they wont let you load offshore loads if dont have locks. and if you leave a twist on the straps they are not so likeley to vibrate :)

weiserbud67 has something about the airflow i think, but i dont rarely have to strap down my loads sence i drive a graveltruck:) we only use 4 ton straps with hand tighteners so heavy straps cranked very tight mite not have that problem.

If I had to trave on the freeway, I would put one twist in the strap to prevent it from vibrating, or buzzing

Marked G-70 3/8 chain has a working load limit of 6600 pounds .Chains are not to rub each other per D.O.T.

Correct, however WLL for the weakest link should be used, that is the snap or ratchet binder typically marked on the handle.👍

That's a good way to tie it down if you want it to fall off. One chain around the front going back, binder in the middle. One chain around the back going forward binder in the middle. Number of traps equal to the first number in the length of the container. If its loaded 2 chains front and rear in an X to the opposite corner and tighten down. Again straps equal to the first number on the length of the container. 40' can = 4 Straps and so on. Put twists in the straps so they don't vibrate against the container.

Why would you take the twist out now it will flap around in the wind no matter how tight you winch it always leave a twist on both sides that prevents the strap from flapping which causes premature strap damage twist both sides that's flatbed 101 people
@jimkunce551
@jimkunce551 9 жыл бұрын
thats right why would you? A real flat bed truck driver knows a twist is better then no twist at all flapping straps loosen up a twist in the flap makes in more arrow dynamic so to speak, put a twist in your straps..

don't yall have container twistlocks installed in the bed of the flatbed? Don't think its standard here, but most of us who do both flatbed and containertransport have them installed, just easier.... and faster.

What load of bs for a stat you don't have steel on steel you have twist locks if u don't sit it on 4 car Tyre's and choke the chains on the corners and the chains closes to the corner as u can then have binder in the middle all you need is one chain each end

Lazy People leave the strap on the winch and STUPID people throw the chain end or hook end over the load. You just KILLED the person walking past or broke the window or dented the load! GOOD JOB steering wheel holder! A TRUCK Driver would know not to do those things!

is that can loaded or empty? if it"s loaded your not legal chains from top corners of can, ever notice your straps flapping in the wind no matter how tight are and your straps wear right near the bottom of the can ? put a half twist in your strap solves flapping and useless wear on straps which will render you illegal for worn straps in a matter of hours. half twist is legal full twist and more is not.

He definitely said 80,000 pounds . What I think he meant to say was a 3/8 × grade 70 chain Is rated at a safe working load of 6600 pounds. With a Max break strength of 26000. Give or take a couple 100 pounds.

3/8 chain will 6600 lbs straps 5400 lbs with the text you put in I'll assume 4 strap plus you chains give 48000 of load secument so yes 80000 but if that container weighs more than 54000 you need oversize permits next never throw hook end of strap for safety especially not ones with chain ends and another dot violation no protection between the chains to prevent them from rubbing on each other so now by dot those chains don't count so now you have 36000 lbs of load securement and no protection from forward or rear movement so unsecured load and never heard a "binder" ratchet or snap called a bear trap
