The musicianship of Flatt and Scruggs was awesome, they all could play off of each other so well.

This is so AWESOME, I'm listening to it over and over. Earl Scruggs is just so fluid and graceful, makes it look so easy. I'm teaching myself to play banjo and tryin to copy him. OK, so, let's have all the names of everyone in this group, they just click so well together, anyone ?

I always thought Lester Flatt held an extreme resemblance to my great grandpa. Ironically, his name was Lester! And I always did love how they wear their hats sideways. It just makes you feel comfortable (or laid-back) to watch them. Heck, I got chills just watching this, I love it so much!

Such a good performance. The band and Earl are brilliant, as always, but Lester's voice sounds particularly nice in this one. Awesome.

I heard this first on Bela Fleck's Tales From The Acoustic Planet CD and thought it was an original. Ha! All the years I listened to Flatt and Scruggs growing up and never heard this. Great tune. Thanks for the edyoukayshun!

I think some people think of it as "hillbilly" music, and they think "hillbillies" are incestuous ignoramuses. They are often portrayed that way. Different topic: There is great improvisation in good bluegrass. Watch this again and note how Earl improvises and jazzes up the melody. I guess you could call bluegrass the jazz of country.

Makes me miss hearing my grandparents play and going to festivals with them. The pickers would play well into the night when the fireflies are out and you all gather by the fire.

I love the choreography those guys displayed when performing. On this one, it's Earl on banjo and Curly on mandolin weaving in and out, to and from the microphone. On other songs it was Earl and Josh and Paul -- they were masters. They set the standard.

I have particularly loved "metal" music for about twenty years, although not exclusively. Hearing Flatt and Scruggs' music, (especially Scruggs on the banjo), makes me yearn for the 20th century when their lives were simpler. Music seemed to be fun then. Their topics are simple life and their music comes from "playing with instruments on the front porch". They are the "real" musicians. They worked together to share a single microphone! I absolutely love these guys and this video! Thanks!

Of course Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs up front. Cousin Jake Tullock on bass, Curly Sechler on mandolin. Uncle Josh Graves on dobro and Paul Warren are also in the band and can be seen in other videos. Sechler and Warren played with Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass after Flatt and Scruggs broke up. Great stuff...thanks for posting these!

I like music everyone can smile and sing along with. I see hoards of joggers and kids walking with their i pods, and I have never seen anyone smiling or singing along as they go. It would be hard not to sing along and smile as you jog to this.

To you and pegcage too, lots of the country and especially bluegrass was influenced by jazz. Watch and listen to Homer and Jethro and you see it a bunch. The riffs that Jethro played on the mandolin and the chords Homer played on guitar weren't standard bluegrass, but jazz. It fit really well with what they did and it's hard to distinguish, but it sounds so good! Jethro I believe I read was a trained classical and jazz musician. He was Chet's brother in law too.

@sowhatdude1,.mostly because of lack of room and also none if the instruments were electric so for them to be heard they had to get close to the mic. Same with the singers. Not enough room for extra mics plus other performers would be up right after. This was the early 60' s, think early technology.
