Flattening Workbench After 2 Years! How Did t Get This Bad?!
I have been waiting so long to do this! The bench top was made of green lumber. I waited two years so that the top can become stable. If I had done this sooner, the top would've continued to twist and warp. I am quite pleased with the end result. I hope you enjoy the video! :)

Nice video. Glad you gave Mark kudos. It was interesting to see you going along the grain in your routing. I wonder if that made the bench any smoother than The Whisperer ended up with by going across the grain. I have a Rockler bench that I need to flatten after three years and both the videos have helped me prepare. Thanks.

Thanks for the video! I am going to use the router method to level my benchtop just like you've demonstrated now... If I may, why did you not use the face vice to help hold your one guide rail? Looks to me that it would have helped, in itself, to solve the spacing issue.

Great video, but PLEASE balance the music volume and your voice volume. Not a lot of fun listening to you at one volume, and then getting blasted by loud music.

That bench-top must have been really out of alignment, you really took a lot off the top. I was hoping to see what you did with the center of the top.

What bit did you use? It looks like it left a nice surface without a lot of machine marks. Also what type of finish did you apply?

Well done video in every way. By the time you pass that bench on to a smiling grandson old Gramps bench top will have been resurfaced 20 times and is now only an inch and a half thick :-)
@Cadwaladr
@Cadwaladr 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, it looks like your well board shrank a half an inch, that's pretty bad. I've recently been working with some old pine boards that were cut in the 1940s, and the 1x12s are still 11 1/4", or near enough; That's the same as you'd get now, plus they're 13/16" thick. I think trees grow faster nowadays due to more CO2 in the air, and maybe that makes the wood shrink more as it dries. I also have a cabin that was built in 1964, and the 2x4s are 1 5/8x 3 5/8, and they've stayed the same size for over 50 years.
@WesleyAring
@WesleyAring 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it shrank quite a bit, but that's just a wood characteristic
@blueboyblue

I think most woodworkers spend most of the time and woodworking skill building their own shop, not working on projects for themselves or other people. Still everything you do whether for the Shop, for yourself, or for someone else, improves your woodworking skills, and that makes the next job that much easier.

Also I built my workbench 17 years ago and I haven't done anything to the surface. I'll have to check how bad it is at some point.

Some woods are more stable than others. Regardless, after 17 years, it should be nice and dry!

Nice job Wesley, hard to believe that wood shrunk so much. I need to build a heavy duty workbench similar to that when I FINALLY get my woodworking shop built, lol. Trying to grow a beard ? HAHA!!!!!!!
@WesleyAring
@WesleyAring 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you build one out of construction lumber, it WILL twist and shrink. You just have to wait several months so it becomes stable. Haha I just shaved yesterday ;)

Most would simply use a Paper Dust Mask, but I think the Mask you have is superb for dust and for solvents.

Those were some deep passes. Your router must have been crying by the end.

Actually, the router I was using was a Makita 3 1/4 HP. They were deep passes, but the router didn't bog down or heat up. I could've gone deeper if I wanted to. It was the perfect tool for this job!

It is where you put tool while you are working. That way, you can slide pieces to span the entire bench without knocking anything over :)
