Clarus coming in clutch with the recall about the guy that impaled Miller's partner. Also, I can't wait for Season 2!!! Also also, Thoth "was the [Egyptian] god of the moon, sacred texts, mathematics, the sciences, magic, messenger and recorder of the deities, master of knowledge, and patron of scribes." I actually didn't catch that when I watched this episode. So, hmmm.....

Fun-adjacent fact! During Miller's rabblerousing scene, his line "we're just meat for the machine" is sort of an easter egg. In the show, the security company we see on Eros is only ever named as CPM. In the book, CPM stands for Carne Por La Machina-literally "meat for the machine."

@VLaks1
@VLaks1 Жыл бұрын
@@hubertkostkowski6903 I completely disagree lol. Neither the books nor the show ever have any "lazy or useless" writing. Both versions focus on different things, which is precisely what make them such great companion pieces to each other. But they both tell the exact same overarching story (at least up until Book 6). Personally, I prefer the show. The show does characters much better than the books do, particularly the supporting characters and the antagonists. The POV style of the early-books doesn't lend itself to giving much depth to those types of characters. I also prefer the show version of the main characters. I think the actors really made them their own, and the writers began writing to their strengths. I also think the show approaches the political and social issues of the series in a much more interesting way. Nothing wrong with preferring the books of course, but saying either way "lazy" is very off-base imo.

@Hubert Kostkowski Yes, I have read the books. Multiple times over, in fact. I'm genuinely not sure if it was your intention to be vague or if you merely have awful english grammar. But I'm glad for it all the same. Because either way, I'm gonna do everyone here the courtesy of not responding to you, so that we can avoid any spoilers. The book does sort of do "space zombies." They apparently decided there were already too many zombies on television, which was good. Remember that the original creators are also in the screenwriting room. They have said that they considered the series the final draft of their saga. Some of the changes from the books were required by the television medium. One real problem they ran into was that unlike the books, they couldn't drop a character out of the action and bring them back in later books, because actors have to be kept on contract or they lose them to other projects (which did happen at least three sorrowful times). So, the series enlarged the roles of some fan-favorite actors to keep them on contract. But many of their changes were a matter of streamlining the story, pacing it better, and making it much stronger. Remember Miller had killed only one person before Eros, and the the guy in the game parlor was first time Holden had participated in killing. Holden didn't kill Kenzo, and I personally don't think he managed to kill anyone in the melee escaping Eros. Amos agreed to take the Belters with them when he saw the child. Remember, nothing in this story is fluff. The scientist Dresden apparently does have a rationale, as shown when he said Julie was blessed and that she would save them all. We had to wait a year for the next episode.

One detail that the TV show left out in this episode that was in the books, was early on when the riots happened on Ceres, Miller's police department noticed their riot gear was missing. Later, in the chapters this episode is based on, Miller notices that the Ceres gangsters that left are wearing his department's riot gear.

I love this story because of how it blends sci-fi with classic murder mystery and horror. The books won multiple awards. The authors are also producers on the show, so the TV adaptation is very faithful to the source material. The first season of the show is roughly 2/3 of the first book, Leviathan Wakes, which is why the finale ends on a cliffhanger. Season 2 blends the remainder of book 1 with book 2.

The Book doesn't include any of Christen's material. The Earth government side of the issue isn't a part of book one. Introducing her and the larger side of the Earth government absolutely helps elevate the material it makes her growth even better than what is in the book. In fact while we loose a bunch of material that shows the day in life for Holden's group and Miller's side, they do introduce several characters earlier then what they would be introduced in the books and pretty much every case its makes the story better.

The creators themselves said that the Expanse is completely hard and realistic sci-fi with the exception of 2 elements: the first is the Epstein drives which propel the spacecraft - they are nuclear fusion reactors which have a way more efficient fuel/power ratio than anything we've even theorised, and that's a conceit just to keep travel times down to days or weeks rather than months and years between bodies in the system (though heading out to like Neptune is still months each way, but given that current speed is 12 years that should give you an idea). The second element is the blue goo. All I'll say is that it follows the spirit of Hard Sci-fi as well as a certain Third Law.
@kirkdarling4120

John Campbell, the legendary early editor of Analog Science Fiction magazine ("Astounding" when he took it over) had the rule that a good science fiction story could have no more than one or two "magical hand waves," upon which everything else in the story had to rest upon with firm logic and scientific plausibility. I consider the Epstein drive and the Protomolecule both rather half hand waves. The Epstein drive is certainly closer to reality than faster than light travel, and, yes, the blue goo is an example of that certain Third Law.

Holden was in the Military (and not just a grunt, command school) he will absolutely use lethal force. But unlike someone like Amos or Miller, he needs a reason to. He is deliberately missing when shooting at the spy. And why? Because the spy was unarmed and not a direct threat. Once the guns start going off Holden would absolutely shoot. That's why he refused to shoot a ship of smugglers because the smugglers weren't a threat. Holden would use lethal force to defend life, or when attacked. As Amos was about to shoot and kill Martian soldiers who hadn't yet attacked, Holden would have shot Amos, if the situation got to that point. At this point Holden believes in doing the right thing regardless of the cost.

That's why it's hard to explain The Expanse to folks who haven't seen it. It's MOSTLY hard scifi. There are specific elements that aren't... but the show is very good about isolating that. In some scifi, things are mostly hard scifi and then they introduce something... and then everything just starts falling apart. This show doesn't do that.

Iodine tablets are for fission products, basically where you are exposed to radioactive iodine. Having iodine already in you prevents you from absorbing the radioactive iodine. There are other ways of treating radiation itself, but right now they are limited in effectiveness. The amount of radiation they absorbed in that time shown here would usually be lethal, though you might somehow get bizarrely lucky and somehow recover (there are cases where people who should be dead didn't die, while people around them who had less radiation did die). That said, the recovery is pretty miserable.

Five more episodes to the end of Book 1. The second greatest streak of episodes this entire series has.

You know the initial climb at the start of an old school rollercoaster? You get to right near the top and you get excited by the view and a peak at what's over the first hill? Like you're having a good time and fun and you see there's more to come. "Whooo!" you happily yell to each other. That's where you are. Except you actually have no goddamn idea what the rest of the rollercoaster is like, y'all. Enjoy the ride.

The radiation affects Miller more than Holden because Miller is a belter. The people who set up the equipment were expendable. Everyone was except the scientists.

i think it's more like "mass effect," but "halo" is good, too. which character do you think is analogous with master chief? btw, i love it when you guys talk shop, giving details which would only be caught by someone (or someoneS) whose easy familiarity with the process makes it possible. can't wait to see you both reacting to season two -- and then three -- episodes.

7:50 I don't *know* if the writers intended that as a reference to Tommy Cooper, but being a Brit of a certain vintage, that is how I interpreted it.
