A villain is supposed to be the hero of their own story, not a misunderstood hero or an anti-hero.

I miss when villains could be arseholes simply because they're an evil arsehole. Not because they have a sympathetic backstory, or because they want to "fix the system by killing 50% of all people", or because of "toxic masculinity". Just a villain who _knows_ they're evil and owns it, you don't really see much of that these days. I can understand throwing in a misunderstood anti-hero from time to time for a bit of variety, but they should be the exception to the rule.
