FLEETWOOD MAC reunite for the first time (sans Christine McVie) to record their first studio album in over fifteen years. Follow them as they write and record their album Say You Will from the first day Stevie Nicks walks into the studio to the opening night of their tour. Cameras rolled practically every moment from start to finish. Fleetwood Mac: Destiny Rules captures the ups and downs of a legendary, storied band like no other documentary before.

I understood him saying what he did about 170 retakes of a song in the studio ... just exasperating. Stevie is so stubborn about having her songs a priority, most of this documentary featured her songs only. It would have been good to hear more of Lindsay's songs. You can overthink how a song sounds, should sound, could sound and I thought Lindsay was very patient with Stevie's demands and insisting on having her songs take over the album. The one thing I didn't agree about was his view that it didn't matter if a double album didn't make money, it was about the music. If you don't make money you can't make the music, and if you can't make money a record label isn't interested.

One thing I have come to realize about Lindsey Buckingham is that he is a very deep thinker and quite articulate and that he is able to diplomatically discuss deep issues with a sense of eloquence. Stevie is gifted in her own way -more of a poet than a deep thinker.. together they are all magic!

Dennis Cassley Well...OTOH none of them are children or hostages. They all have adult agency they can-and do-exercise at their discretion. They’re all autonomous human beings with their own ideas, styles of disagreeing etc. It’s just not realistic to put a group of people together all of whom are creative, passionate and incredibly talented and not have some fireworks, Yk?! In fact, their “disagreements” have provided tons of material that has informed their music for decades ;-)

@@MerkinMuffly He's not an a$$hole--absurd comment. Somebody has to creatively lead a band, and there are a 1001 things that go into creating/producing a quality collections of 12/18 songs, not to mention all the business/financial complications that go into organizing a tour and planning ahead. It's enormously challenging and stressful and there are always going to be conflicts big and small among band members. It goes with the territory.

Imagine if they'd included footage of when he kept kicking her onstage with his cowboy boots, or deliberately played the wrong notes to throw her off her solo moments. He would also follow her around onstage with a scarf around his head, a cruel mimic borne from his jealousy of how much press coverage she was getting. Christine McVie slapped him across the face after one show, yelling 'don't you ever do that to this band again, or to Stevie'.

@@skylinerunner1695 - That was in the past way in the past. Here's a news flash Stevie was no saint either. Without Lindsey's contributions, the early success of Fleetwood Mac (White album '75, Rumours '77, Tusk '79, Mirage '82, and Tango in the Night '87) would cease to exist. In fact, it's highly doubtful that Stevie would have remained in the music business without Lindsey. If Lindsey would have not agreed to join FM, Stevie was going to give up on the music business and return to college. Lindsey was the catalyst to FM's success.

@@stannis768 I'm well aware of how much the band owes Buckingham for their resurgance. He was the creative engine behind their highest successes, and their current status as a global supergroup is largely down to him. I don't dispute any of that and I think it was a gutless move for them to fire him at this late stage in their lives, especially as they originally only wanted him, and it was at his insistence that Nicks be allowed to join as well. I don't know how Buckingham can even sleep at night for just how unfair it was for them to ditch him now. I was simply repsonding the many comments that gushed and glowed about the man, who, like all of us, was imprefect and could be a right royal bastard at times.

So essentially Fleetwood Mac is a 40 year therapy session for two people who split up in the 1970s and have never quite been able to get away from each other. But that aside, it just shows the creative, personal and business politics that make producing a cohert product so difficult. Especially when you have multiple managers, record companies and lawyers involved.

The songs are fantastic, but I don't think all of them were produced well. Some of the demos sound better. Say Goodbye has this weird up-tempo vibe with filtered vocals- it sounds so much better live. Goodbye Baby has these beautiful harmonies that got swallowed by filters on the album version, but the live recordings give you chills...Thrown Down started out with a really cool 'question and answer' effect on the chorus of her demo version that got cut... Some of the songs were over-produced in a way that wouldn't have happened if these songs came out in the 70's... Even so, they are masterpiece songs... and that's a testimate to how amazing this band is... I listen to this album and think 'I wish they did this song differently' but I still love and appreciate the songs.

His refusal to exist in mediocrity is inspiring. As far as Stevie believing that no one would want to buy a double album, I for one would have purchased at least one, but more likely a few more as gifts for friends. Lindsey seemed to feel a need to justify his feelings, or to say that maybe they were self serving, but for f*#@ sake, he worked his ass off, pouring his heart and soul into the album. I would never say that is self serving, as the group received the benefits of his labor of love. Saw him play some years back in San Francisco, and my life is better for it. My soul was moved.

There are sooo many FM documentaries out there that they all start to meld together as the same recycled content after awhile, but this one will always stand out for me (along with the Tusk doc) as one of - if not the best one. I could watch their dynamic as a group for hours on end. Especially Stevie and Lindsey, whom I will always believe are soulmates in another reality. Seeing them behind the scenes and watching how they talk through things with each other is just so entertaining. I hope more than anything that they will end on good terms and reunite eventually, before it's too late...

The issue has always been about control. Lindsey is a “control freak” when it comes to album producing. He’s an absolute fanatic and doesn’t care about the “commercial” side of the product. For him it’s about the pure artistry of the music. For many years he was FM’s leader as far as the direction of their music. The albums “Tusk” and “Tango in the Night” are prime examples. When he left the band in 1987, and return to the fold (recording wise) in 2003 (Say You Will), he expected to resume where he left off. Unfortunately, the music industry had changed significantly and Stevie was far from that meek, naive, and dependent singer from the 70’s.

They were around before I was born but connect with me just as much as anything released in my own youth. It’s intimate and we know this stuff really happened. People talk about the Nicks/Buckingham connection all the time, but to me, McVie/Buckingham really play off each other. Love McVie, but on her own her songs are too soft rock/pop (see her solo stuff and songs she did on Behind The Mask) to me. Lindsey adds a much needed edge to her songs to make them perfect (Little Lies and their recent "duet" album are prime examples).

there is a tortured dynamic to the makeup of this band. it's like if you forced Joni Mitchell, the Wilson Brothers, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and Dusty Springfield into a band together and then FORCED them to make albums together. One may have little use for one member or another.. certainly Christine(Dusty Springfield) may seem the most lightweight or trite of the band. But look at the genius of it.. two brilliant innovative L.A. types.. first rate songwriting, next level pop production, with a deep soul level connection to their music .. a classic late 60s blues rhythm section.. and then sprinkle on top British pop songwriting like Elton John along with a singer steeped in British blues & r&b. It certainly paid off up front.. Christine's first hits for the band were bullets.. "You Make Lovin' Fun" "Over My Head" "Say You Love Me" ... she could have retired on those 3 ALONE! But she kept on producing singles for the band. That can't be denied though I agree you needed Lindsey to polish those diamonds! But Christine has an "IT" factor that the other two don't quite have. Even during the pre Buckingham Nicks era! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKa7nneNZquCbas

When Stevie was getting more press coverage than him, he would kick her onstage while wearing his steel-capped cowboy boots, and follow her around wearing a scarf around his head, a cruel mimic of her outfits, and deliberately play the wrong notes to throw her off her solo numbers. Christine MacVie slapped him hard across the face after one show and told him to never do that to Stevie or the band again. His girlfriend of 8 years, Carol Ann Harris, was strangled by him on more than one occasion and punched in the face due to his jealous rage. Christine MacVie, again, witnessed him reversing out of her driveway with his arm out the window dragging his young girlfriend by the hair. After he let go and roared off, her scalp was bloody. I actually bought this on DVD years ago. I really love this film for many reasons. But, after Lindsey " departed " from the band recently, all of a sudden I saw a TOTALLY different viewpoint about Lindsey. He really worked hard on this album: You could really see how much he was making up for lost time between he and Stevie ( to the point where I felt that Stevie really resented his ideas during the making of this album ). In fact, there are several points in the film where you can see Lindsey is really wanting Stevie's songs to excel for HER songwriting purposes ( especially from the 36:04 to 37:20 mark ). I don't feel Stevie really ever got over the fact that Lindsey has always been and will always be about the CRAFT of songwriting versus just throwing something together unedited ( see the Rumors documentary where Stevie says she has a hard time of letting her songs go ). Fleetwood Mac's loss of Lindsey, while not the first time they've gone on without a top songwriter, is a slap in the face to Lindsey for shortsighted reasons ( which was proven false with cell phone video contradicting Stevie's claim ). And, as a result, I feel Stevie is only going to regret losing Lindsey's important contributions. And, even before their personal relationship dissolved, you can see the professional one dissolving here in this film, which Lindsey tried to salvage through his workmanship production.

Hi, there are still people who will buy a record, people in their 50 I know. They still do. I find they have to consider and save before the purchase, however. I'm in my 50s and still do buy music, but I have to really want it and then go get it. I like vinyl and have been disappointed by CDs since '83. The additional formats, I don't bother with gadgets. Just my two cents. I'm American but have been in France for a long time and vinyl is absolutely still sold here. It isn't a typical format, however, for most people unless they are really old timers or have a specific interest. I agree with you, she was right about who the target market is. Definitely. I find I am fussy about new music. Of course I consider new things, but I may need a referral.
