Yeah, there was something wrong with her singing on that 1982 tour. Ive been doing the deep dive, something was wrong with her at that point,too much vibrato and not enough effort in the melody. I see elements of Stevie in performers like Maggie Rogers, Florence Welch, the Haim sisters, Paris Paloma (who will be opening for her in the UK), and even Taylor Swift (at select times, and Stevie by her own admission feels a connection with her). The new artist Chappell Roan also sometimes reminds me of her vocal technique (very very different musical style though...and I'd say she sounds more like Kate Bush & Pat Benatar, if we're being more specific). But no one has matched Stevie's presence and abilities. She is a legend for a reason.

I've previously posted some critical posts about this performance previously, but I will give Stevie the benefit of a doubt. I seem to recall that this festival performance was thrown in at the last minute into FM's Mirage tour schedule, and the stage sound setup was not unlike Live Aid, where 6 bands that night were being swapped out one after the other, and anything could and would go wrong. At the beginning you can tell Stevie is wildly gesturing to the sound person offstage to turn up the volume on her monitor -- she probably couldn't hear herself. Later you see her pulling something from her ear. It may have either been an ear plug -- or it may have been an in-ear monitor, because Todd Rundgren had started using them the same year, in 1982. However, back then they would have provided both stage monitors AND in ear monitors in case the musicians didn't like them. Looks like maybe Stevie didn't! So it's possible it caused issues for Stevie in terms of both timing and pitch. However, the rest of the band was clearly unfazed -- they're all playing in top form. They're all singing really well together on the choruses. Lindsey, especially, is really mixing it up and doing some amazing and playful stuff on his guitar solos. Unfortunately, Stevie apparently was trying to improvise at the end also, which was probably a bad idea when you can't hear yourself well. And then suddenly you can hear audio feedback squealing, which is probably precisely when they got Stevie's stage monitors working, and they forgot they had the volume cranked up, causing Stevie to briefly go into Exorcist eye-roll mode. At that point Stevie's voice was blown from trying to project when she couldn't hear herself. Finally, about Stevie looking pale -- during the Mirage tour, for whatever reason, she chose to start wearing makeup to make herself look whiter. A departure from her previous California Tan look. She carried that look forward to extremes up to the Dance album from that point on. I think she was getting dark circles under her eyes from overdoing.... STUFF.

You'd think the band would achieve a template concert version on a tour and play it night following night, stanza for stanza. That's not the case here. I have heard 3 different versions of this song from the 1982 tour, Memphis being my favourite. And every one of them is different. What that tells me is the musicians are keyed into each other in a way that the audience can never suspect. Yeah, Stephanie's voice is scratchy. But remember this is outdoors at night. 5:20-5:35 she looks like she is doing a zombie shuffle walk, which is quite fitting for this particular performance in my opinion. Also, a lot of people say (not just this vid), that she changes the lyrics often. I’ve probably heard only 10-ish different versions, but the lyrics always seem the same to me. She always (usually)adds the “Once in a million years a lady like her rises Oh no, Rhiannon, you cry, but she's gone, Your life knows no answer, your life knows no answer”. I honestly would like to hear the different lyrics, perhaps on her solo tours?

It looks like Stevie's ear piece was not working which can make it hard to sing because you can't hear yourself over all the noise. To me it looked as if she was struggling emotionally as well with the technical failure and probably was containing her anger and unable to really get into the song as she usually does. I would have been PISSED if I had been her and that happened! These guys are perfectionists and professionals. And for those saying she's "coked up", please don't assume it's drugs. I think this band has earned a bit more respect than that.
@billoleshkojr64695 жыл бұрын
Aubrey, ear piece monitors did not exist in 1982! Bands relied on those big clunky floor monitors! You can see Stevie motion with her left hand at the beginning to the sound guys to raise the volume, then she starts pounding her fists to let them know she wants the drums louder. Her emotions were running high! As we all know, Robin had very little time left at this point! And yes, she is under the influence of cocaine AND booze! Maybe more booze than anything! You can see it in her eyes and her motions, trust me, I've been there! But, our Stevie was a true pro! That's why we love her!!!

I was at this show. I had already seen Fleetwood Mac many times before this. Stevie was off this night. I don't know if she was wasted or not, but it seemed so. She went on a crying rant about her brother being a witch.
