In a significant move to bridge economic disparities and foster inclusivity, the Honourable Melissa Lee, Minister for Economic Development, visited The Cause Collective (TCC) recently. Her visit marked a pivotal moment for Pacific peoples in Auckland, as she engaged with key partners involved in the Alo Vaka Pacific Auckland Skills Shift initiative: The Southern Initiative and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited.
Hosted by TCC through its transformative Matangi Fou initiative, the event aimed to spotlight the collaborative efforts in reshaping the future of work for Pacific communities. The Matangi Fou initiative, a beacon of hope and progress, strives to bring about substantial changes by addressing the unique challenges faced by Pacific peoples in the workforce.
One of the highlights of the event was Project Ikuna, an exemplary program that hosted a panel discussion featuring employers who have trained their staff in various Micro-credential programs such as Assertiveness and Confidence, Money Confidence, and Life Online. Employers from prominent companies including Fletcher Steel, Foodstuffs, The Warehouse Group, OfficeMax, and Pacific Homecare shared their experiences on how these programs have significantly benefited both their businesses and employees.
The employers were asked about the impact of these programs on achieving business outcomes and supporting their employees' professional and personal development. Most commented on how the Assertiveness and Confidence program, designed by Zeducation, has instilled more confidence and improved communication among their staff. This has led to highly positive employee engagement surveys, which generally translate to better retention and increased engagement within the workplace.
Additionally, some employees highlighted how the Money Confidence program helped them budget their finances and reduce financial stress. The Conflict Resolution program, also designed by Zeducation, was noted for its effectiveness in managing conflicts and fostering better relationships both at home and at work.
A particularly memorable moment came from Fletcher Reinforcing employee, Woxy, who was the last speaker on the panel. He surprised everyone by standing up to speak in front of the audience, demonstrating newfound confidence in action. This moment not only brought smiles to the audience but also highlighted the real, tangible impact of Project Ikuna on individuals' lives, bringing a smile to Minister Lee’s face as well.
