Hey, Ernie! Just saw this again in my suggested videos, so thought i would give a long-term reviewish comment. Over time, i have found myself using this kit more and more. I love carrying La Moderna Mexican Tomato Chicken soup packets, and with this kit you can add half a pack with 2c water and in around 12 minutes have a hot bowl of soup, then flip the lid over and boil a cup of coffee or cocoa. Also it boils and hydrates my homemade dehydrated meals quite well. The latest amazement was actually discovered on July 4th when my daughter and i were doing a little picnic waiting for the city fireworks. You can put a pack of hotdogs and 2 John Morrell smoked sausages cut in half in vertically with 1/2-1c water and have PERFECTLY steamed dogs. We were so amazed that we have used it several more times since lol. Add in the Esbit fry pan, ehich actually works quite well on top of the stand, and you can cook great food and have a perfect little kit for solo adventures. Also to add, if you take the lid of a larger veggie can, you can toss it in the bottom to make it into a twig stove in an emergency

This was the very first cook kit I ever bought for overnighters and weekend trips. For a rookie backpacker who doesn't have the experience to build their own kit yet this is definitely a good choice.

I used Esbit as my sole source of fuel for a Georgia AT section hike back in 2006. Temperatures dropped into the 20s and I was always able to boil 2 cups of water. I used a titanium Esbit cube holder, a titanium 1.3 liter Evernew titanium pot, and a titanium foil windscreen. I can't remember the weight, but it was stupid light, and Esbit cubes makevery good fire starters. The kit that you reviewed is a nice, light, compact kit. The boil time with the Esbit cubes was impressive. You would need a decent windscreen for regular use.

Thanks for all your great videos. I use my Esbit all the time despite having loads of stoves to choose from, I do 2-6 day hiking and camping trips. It’s quiet (helpful in UK for wild camping as it’s not normally legal), it has a handle on the simmer cover, mine has non-stick inside, the big slot in the windshield allows you to put the simmer cover over the flame without taking the pot off. I use an additional folding aluminium windshield which keeps even more heat on the pot as well as protecting against quite strong wind, I can fold the windshield for my frying pan size or the standard pot. I want to replace the plastic feet with aluminium so I can use it as a small twig burner too, for fun or if I run out of spirits. So far I’ve only used the small pan as a lid. Spirit burners do take longer than the noisy gas stoves but I’m always about enjoying the journey and the relaxation of nighttime camps and I don’t need to eat the miles to get to a destination. I use an additional pot bag to make sue the non-stick does not get damaged. I cook boil in the bag meals in the pot and use the same boiled water for tea, perfect. I fit tea bags, powdered milk, a lighter and trimmed down plastic spork as well as the burner etc. I love it. Hope this helps people.

I bought that same kit for my husband for Father's Day awhile back. We have been pleasantly surprised how often we use it! It's a 👍 great kit to take on day hikes, fishing trips and any outing when you're not in a hurry to make foods quicker. We often take it for heating canned soups and sammies. It makes a 👍 good pot of cowboy coffee too. All in all it's a really nice, compact kit!

Have had my 5 pc trail set for 7 yrs now. Made a wind screen from an aluminum oven liner sheet from the dollar store and I nest that around the pot holder then place it in the larger (bottom) pot. The wind screen makes a huge difference and weighs nothing. I don't store alcohol in the burner but I do store two Esbit cubes in it...fits w/the lid screwed on. It's funny that you mentioned how it takes some bloom time but you did count it anyway. Most people who time alcohol stoves will not count the bloom time. Just say'n. Aluminum is very close to Ti in weight. I use my pots for the solid fuel, alcohol and stick stoves. This is a great kit and will last the test of time. There is still room like you said for lighter, alcohol.....in small tightly sealed containers....1 oz.?, although I like to carry it in empty Heat bottles as they are indestructible and w/the long neck won't leak. Using the alcohol stove this is a great kit for 1-2 people and you've got the solid fuel as backup. Thanks for reviewing it!

I bought this kit a year or so ago. It’s a nice kit and the two fuel options give you some versatility in how it is used. Nice kit to toss in your car with solid fuel for emergencies, or pack alcohol for camping or planned usage.

I own the solid fuel kit and customized it to burn alcohol using a penny can stove too and a twig stove if needed. Esbit in my opinion is an example of German innovation and quality.

I like this cook kit. It looks extremely useful for a few people. I think this could cook things quickly for at most 3 to 4 people at a time if really stretching the food. But I just got the whole firebox set because that could feed a small army if need be or comfortably cook for 1.

I’ve owned my Esbit kit for 4 years now, I bought it for backpacking. Because of the sacks it sits very quiet in my pack. Very efficient and light weight rig. The only draw back is the fuel pellets, they smell like rotten fish and the smell will absorb in what you store them in. Stick with the alcohol as it can be purchased in any trail town easily.I have also tried to improve on this system, but in the end it works just fine as is. I’m learning about Carbon Felt, maybe for an additional wind shield.

We bought one of those sets awhile back and noticed that the larger size isobutane gas canisters fits perfectly in the cook pot, making this kit even more versatile.

The Solid Compartment is made for Fuel Paste, the one for Fondues or the Military one. Thats why it has wholes. And then it burns faster than Alcohol

Neat piece of kit. I was wondering how the simmer ring would work given the diameter of the pot support. I watched it again and saw a cut out in the support. I assume that's where the simmer plate would rotate into.

It’s a complex issue...I’m a slacker! I have applied to get Starlink internet here at the house and have been able to put down a deposit on a unit. I should get it before the end of 2021. Once I do I can livestream from home and I will much more frequently. Right now I have to go to the office, so I often don’t. Laziness :)

@@PaleoHikerMD Slacker, eh? As much water as you boil in between all that doctorin'...? I'd say you're doing a dang good job. Here's a pic of my latest setup. Made a tray for a little quicker bloom; a snuffer that seats itself about 95% of the time; holes drilled inward at an angle - good vortex flame pattern. Couple that with my 420 windscreen, it boils 2 cups in 5:35. Keep up the good work. [Edit] Trouble with the pic. It's a DX stand with DIY penny can w/wick. Shield is made from Sweetwater 420 beer cans.

I'd like this but with a flat lid, not the fry pan lid. Also I would make a windbreak to just wrap around the bottom part of the stove. I have written to Esbit asking if I can purchase this and purchase a flat lid.

Only issue is it has plastic feet on the bottom that would melt. If you removed them, or better yet replace them with nuts or something, don’t see why not!

Another fuel source is to use a can of Sterno. Simpler than using a cube of alcohol. Extinguish when you are done and not waste any fuel.

I'm a senior citizen planning to start camping after many many years. I'm gathering the basic gear and would like to know what you would suggest for a stove. I have a one burner Coleman stove. I also have the ohuhu wood stove after seeing several different KZbin videos. Not sure if I also need an alcohol stove or a jetboil type stove. Thank you for your help.

Rebecca, there is no one answer to that question. My recommendation for ease of use, reliability, and allowed in national and state parks would be a canister type (propane or butane).

I'm a senior citizen too; when I was young (many years ago) in Alaska I just always made a small wood fire and cooked all my meals. Anything beyond that is easier and good, but maybe the best is the simpler. God bless and enjoy.

I might have liked this but the fry pan lid is not good. I would rather have a regular "flat" lid. SO . . . I am going with the Calder Cone and a Toaks titanium pot. Really light. The Caldera Cone with pot is pretty consistent in burn times. and all. Without the cone one will go through a lot of alcohol.

Excellent review! I can't do solid fuels due to the emissions (smell) they put off because of my COPD. Regardless, with an alcohol burner as an alternative, this is a viable choice. Thank you!

My advice to anyone receiving these freebie/included spirit burners with Esbit and Alocs cook kits is to NEVER use them if you already own a legit Trangia burner... I put one of them to the test recently and found that they are far less fuel-efficient and somewhat dangerous, being that they will often hiss and spit flames and pieces of the wicking material through the little holes while they're warming up due to the lack of exacting tolerances in manufacturing. They also smell like burnt plastic after a single use, compared to a Trangia, which when completely dried out after a full fuel burn return to their clean brass smell... If you receive one along with a cook kit, take the upper lid from it that has the flip-out handle and use it on your Trangia instead.
