Thank god you are sticking with the sub! I get & respect that people have fond memories of it & are nostalgic, but in 99% of cases, the sub is superior to the dub. And it's no different for Death Note. (Also, I feel like switching just breaks the experience to some extent, usually better to stick with the one you started with if the quality is somewhat there) Also very happy you're enjoying Death Note this much! 12:00 Ryuk asked the same question at the end of episode one. Light answered beautifully. making them all heart attacks was the whole point. He WANTED them to know someone was killing the criminals. He wanted to be known as a god. And he wanted them to think he can kill by heart attacks so other ways of killing stay reserved for secret killings that wouldn't draw attention

Like, if someone do the same thing as light (only killing criminals...) without trying to be a God (so no only hearth attack death etc), it's basically impossible to prove the existence of the Death Note and even if you do, it will be extremely hard to find the one using it.

I think that from Light's perspective, "evil" means something different. For Light, anyone who is against him is evil because they are rejecting his "peaceful new world." So, from that point of view, "L" is indeed evil.

Brings back memories of watching this with my friends in middle school. Light is very dedicated to the cause, he got obsessed :D fun fact the INTERPOL members' nameplates have the names of famous soccer players from a number of countries and the flags on the nameplates corresponded with their namesakes' country too :) you are right it would be smart to make it all less suspicious with the killings, though Light did say in the first episode he wants people to notice that bad guys are being punished :) now he is the famous Kira :) he already cracked the whole internet idea back in the early 2000s how clever :D people really are different when anonymous compared to public life :) wasnt very smart to kill that guy on TV though, L truly played him :P the battle for the ages is perfectly set up :) Ryuk is just having the best time :D

L is the GOAT! My man narrowed the scope from global to a single region in Japan and more or less deduced the method of killing. Light has an access to a killing method that is mostly untraceable and wouldn't even have been considered by most people - and L has already cornered him to this extent. It's just like you said, Flexie - if Light had spaced the murders out & chose different types of death (which he actively decided against - incredibly thoughtless decision also driven by hubris and wanting to think of himself as a god), chances are he wouldn't even have been discovered at this point. And even then, if his hubris didn't lead to him trying to kill L, they would have had basically no leads, they wouldn't have been able to pinpoint his location, they wouldn't have been able to make deductions about the method of killing either. The "genius god" got outplayed in Episode 2 already.

Regarding the L & Light distinction. The Kanji for Lights name regularly gets interpreted as Tsuki( which also means light) so a lot of early manga readers and translators actually thought his name was Tsuki. It wasn't until a certain chapter that his name pointed for readers and translators was actually Light. Anime viewers or later manga readers never actually made that mistake though since it was already figured out.

Death note is my personal favorite show. It has its flaws, but I love how deep you can dive into all of the symbolism, dialogue, and characters. Even just the simple premise of Ryuk thinking the human world is so lively and exciting while Light sees it as dull (similar to how Ryuk sees the shinigami realm) is a really cool dynamic. There will be plenty more connections to make, plans to analyze, and story beats to dive into. Also Mamoru Miyano is my favorite VA and him as light is my favorite overall VA performance ever. The cat and mouse game begins, where both sides are simultaneously the cat and the mouse Also, with naruto being my no3 anime, youre only missing Code Geass and then you would be watching all of my top 3 anime simultaneously lol

When the plot says “Write a name on the deathnote and they will die” the impression is more of a child’s play at least for me, but no one expects in episode 2 this will get too serious and too real and the never ending debate of two sides of justice. Also the flaws and immaturity of Light makes this more believable. Even when you are the most intelligent person when you are young, wisdom comes with age. This is the perfect example of that. As a teenager when I saw this, I rooted for Light. But now as an adult, episode 1 I instantly recognize how stupid Light is.

Counter point, the idea is for Light's 'purpose' to be noticed. If people die just a little more quickly than usual, there doesnt appear to be someone 'passing judgment' like what he's trying to accomplish here. He wants to be known about so that criminals feel threatened. You **could** write out scenarios and make it harder to tell, but in the end, not only does that not demonstrate a consistency to 'being judged' but also, it eats up his time as a hard working student. He's got a lot of hobbies that he has to maintain while doing this, so the names are the maximum of what he can currently dish out, and this is something of a theory of why he's doing exactly what he's doing.

The situation with Lind L Taylor is that, L found a prisoner that was scheduled to be executed this day and offered him a pardoning case he lived through the whole think. In case Taylor died hw would lost nothing since he was going to killed anyway, avoiding any crime to be done and actually even giving a chance to save his life. L tried at his best to not cross the line of choosing over the life of others preserving his sense of morality and honestly that's already one of the best scenes in the anime considering how he found a way to execute the plan still keeping him morals . If I'm not mistaken that is explained better in the manga or the movie

Just a side note, while the episode exposed Light's god complex, it did a good job in showing L as a perfect match for him. After all, L had no qualms about sacrificing Lind L Taylor as a guinea pig (yes, he was a death row criminal but it's not so different from Light killing criminals). And Light isn't the only one to call himself "justice", L does it as well.

12:30 Why people shouldn't notice? If they fear death, they may not commit the crime they want to commit. 'There is an entity who kills when you commit a crime' thinking may do the work for him. I see 2 extreme options: 1. He shouldn't kill anyone because killing is bad and even the life of a criminal is precious because he should consider and think over his deeds and should have a chance for a redemption, or 2. He shouldn't restrain himself at all and since sees himself as a god then he should unleash his full power. For some time he was oscillating between those ideas. 16:55 Raito should refrain himself to being only the Kira, but his pride made him a murderer.

I loved this anime, but all through itI was also thinking that Light is not very smart, he did dumb mistakes that a smart person wouldn't do, then when he is planning some evil thing he goes into some genius mode for the kill and then returns to slightly above average intelligence again It was as if Light had a quite high IQ but entirely lacked wisdom, such are the most dangerous exactly because of what happened to Light, he would never ever kill another human being... as long as fears to be caught

Can't help but point out that L's entire plan to pinpoint Light's location hinged on Light's immediate response to the live televised provocation. In other words, had Light missed the live telecast & responded by killing Lind L Taylor after a while, it would have been much more difficult to pinpoint his exact location. Nevertheless any response by Kira - delayed or otherwise would have helped to answer L's other 2 questions (i.e Kira's ability to kill without contact & the need for a name & a face).

Hey Flexie. I really enjoy every reaction of yours because you have a very expressive and beautiful mimic. You are probably right with your comment on smart people, but I would phrase it differently. You said that very Smart people who get bored are very scary. I think high IQ people are considered smart, but there are high IQ people with also high EQ out there, and they don't get bored easily because they are more wise and know that your own high capability are worth of helping people who can not help themselves. The world is very complex and filled with problems. It's impossible to get bored if you see the world from multiple perspectives. It's more likely to be getting very frustrated and depressed until self-inflicted death.

Ah I remember like 9 yrs ago my dad got some og blockbuster type dvds from a friend who didn't want them. Some British comedies and.. the og live action double disc set WITH the book lol. If Light genuinely cared more about the world and humanity as a whole, than he wouldn't care about whether or not people know Kira exists. But he wants the attention and the fame, so he gives himself an MO of only killing with heart attacks. He also doesn't believe people will become good on their own; he believes they will only stay good if they are afraid of Kira. In other words, he's using fear to subjugate people.

The biggest problem with Death Note is that Light has to rely on media and police reports to determine guilt. Which leaves the possibility of killing innocents on the table. Also the fact that Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, so there really isn't a need for this extreme a measure.

Those aren't issues at all: 1. The possibility of killing innocent people doesn't arise from Kira's limited sources of information, but from the mere fact that he is egotistical and corrupt. He didn't kill Raye Penber and Naomi Misora because he lacked complete information, but simply because they were obstacles to his twisted agenda. 2. Kira's "new world" is obviously not limited to Japan. 3. A low crime rate means little if those who commit the greatest evils have the means to evade justice. History is rife with "non-criminals"--politicians, bureaucrats, CEOs, hedge fund managers, archbishops, etc.--who have caused much harm to humanity but never faced justice. Part of Kira's brand of justice is to use mass executions of criminals as a deterrent to evil, which applies to both criminals and non-criminals.

However (in the abstract) it's weird that a story about an anti criminal crusader being in Japan considering it's crime rate. It would be like a story about destroying capitalism taking place mainly in the Soviet Union. 3)That might could happen, but I don't recall Kira killing any powerful evil people.

I think people should enjoy anime the way they want, whether dub or sub. The reason I watch dub is because I have a hard time differentiating between Japanese people's voices; a lot of them sound very similar to me. Also I like to be able to understand a show without having to do a lot of reading. I'll just pick up a book in that case. 😋 Anyway enjoy the sub. They both have good voice actors.
