"Flickering Inertia" was written for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Composer Fellowship Program. It was an attempt to write an academic essay in musical form. In a five-paragraph essay you have the intro/thesis, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
In this piece, there is similarly a thesis where three rhythmic motifs are introduced which will be developed on later in the piece. The following three sections are body paragraphs that elaborate on the rhythmic motifs, somewhat like a theme and variations. In the end, the coda-like conclusion wraps everything up by restating the opening paragraph but with slight variations.
