Majority of animations are recorded this way. Sometimes they will do joint recordings (like previous Toy Story films). It's much funnier when they joint record I agree. Separate recording unfortunately is common practice haha

Maybe it's because of their hectic schedules. I was kinda disappointed with the director's manner of reading the lines as a sub for other voice actors :(

Yeah. It must add a layer of difficulty not feeding off the energy of the other cast member, but that shows how good they are. Keegan-Michael Key (Ducky) and Jordan Peele (Bunny) recorded many of their parts together for this film. So did Tom Hanks and Annie Potts. I was hoping to see that here. That's how they improvised the "we gettin' a kid! we gettin a kid!" part.

Annie Potts (Bo) and Tom Hanks did record together a lot, actually, same with Key and Peele. Key and Peele actually improvised a lot together, including the "we're gonna get a kid" song they did.
