I don’t know if anyone mentioned this in the comments, but the place where the crash happens is iconic for Canadians, and long before the crash happened. The lighthouse in Peggy’s Cove is often included in montages of Canada. For us, this tragedy was made all the more surreal because it happened in a place we all “knew”. Such a sad story. May the dead rest in peace and may their families continue to receive comfort.

Thanks to KZbin I’m up on all the Canadian catastrophes, like one of the world’s biggest munitions explosions in Newfoundland, which ended with “We must remember that it’s part of mainland Canada.” (I didn’t know that was a problem! A lot of Viking ghosts??) And the major train derailment on a route so long there are eleven shift changes.

The purpose of a checklist is to do all the right things as quickly as possible even when facing novel (to you) situations. It baffles me that they have a crazy long checklist in situations where every second counts.

And have right on the top and with big letters, this -Pitot tubes and system -? But as one accident investigator said, it is ok to sit in a nice chair on the computer. Checklists are like they are to make sure there's no vague or ambivalent information. Ideally pilots are to familiarize themselves with the checklists regularly. Allowing them to perform the steps more quickly without having to question its content or meanings.

They should prioritize landing instead of wasting time in the air checking the crazy amount of long checklists. Smoke in an aeroplane is not a joke since almost everything in a plane is highly flammable

I'm not angry with the many checklists, but why take Swissair 111 away from the Airport area to dump fuel? Why not dump fuel from over 10,000ft or land without dumping fuel. That way we would have had a chance for survivals

I'm so sorry for your loss! My friend Monte Wilkins was on Swiss air 111 we were at the same college, I knew him as we shared many good friends . He was just 19 when he boarded 111 and his memory will stay with me forever! He shared my dad's name and my birthday . I didn't know his family, but later a book was written on how they survived their grief as well as how it affected their faith .

Several things I don’t understand your entire cockpit is to the point you need your oxygen mask and you don’t declare a emergency nor do you start early wanting to land immediately and start preparing to in that 30 min window you were given than you fly out towards the ocean already having this problem to dump fuel. You should have just landed. I’m sorry but this was a instructor and a experienced pilot. I’m not saying he couldn’t fly well but common sense and logically thinking in a emergency situation there was no logic on the captains part. They still might have made it but he had 30 mins to arrive at the airport 20 mins later he’s over the ocean dumping fuel. No the air controller did everything right he himself was concerned the pilot was to high and by his wording more less why wasn’t he descending to be able to land. Bless all those souls and there family’s so sad.

I'm not an airplane pilot, I'm a fishing boat captain out of San Diego. But even halfway through this event, I was already calling this captain a moron. Here's why. First, "Where there's smoke, there's fire," and when you're in an enclosed vessel, be it airborne or waterborne, any sign of smoke is considered an EMERGENCY SITUATION. We have a saying on ships, and it goes like this: "A FIRE AT SEA CAN RUIN YOUR ENTIRE DAY." We take that statement seriously. This so-called "professional" captain should have put this airplane on the ground ASAP, but instead he flew around like a student pilot enjoying the view. This was an accident just waiting to happen, but could have so easily been avoided. He had plenty of time to land before things went critical.

I wonder how much quicker they could have landed if they just headed staight for halifax on that 2nd puff of smoke. What if's I know, but this urgency should be built into the procedures. My heart aches for all those people & their unimaginable suffering. I can't believe such an incredible electrical overload ever had the opportunity to occur. An excess of maybe 5 or 10 times the current rating of a cable is required to heat a cable to red heat like that. Where were the fuses? Arcing? Heating & cooling? This was rushed & because of this, hundreds died. So amateur. So tragic. It should never have happened.

The “flying blind” episode is really terrifying, I don’t know about you, but if everything fails, I would resort to using a glass of water to get an idea of what my planes attitude was and use a tube of mercury to get an idea of what my altitude would be, is it primitive? Yes. Will it work when nothing else works? Yes.

About a year after this incident my parents were on a cross Canada flight. There was a strong smell of smoke in the passenger cabin about an hour after takeoff. The crew made an announcement they were diverting and landing immediately. Within 15 minutes the plane landed safely in Calgary. I'm sure the Swissair fire was fresh on the minds of the pilots and ATC.

My Dad was a check airman on the 777 for United for a long time.. retired now. He used to fly to Delhi, Tel-Aviv, Shanghai, Paris, all over.. He used to say, "If I ever I had an on-board fire while at cruise over the ocean, I'd be making a B-line for the closest piece of land immediately. Also used to joke and say, "When going over the north pole, if there was an engine fire or a dual engine failure, there'd be very I can do".. would be crash landing on Santa's front lawn."

HB-IWF / SR-111 Disaster - then the 9/11 terror event with very limited Operation and the whole following SR grounding plus bankrupsy, was at the end too much of bad decisions and events, that Swissair had sadly no chance in survive. Those two guys were reluctant to descend in the first place. When the ATC cleared them to descend to 3000ft they simply replied: negative. The cabin isn’t ready for landing/fuel dump hasn’t done. What a moron! I totally blame this accident on the flight crew. Their lack of situational awareness and quick decision skills sealed the fate of everyone on board.

The situation was out of pilots control extremely quickly. That being said, when they realized a safe landing at Halifax seems increasingly impossible due to various technical and physical factors, they really should change their mind. If they had done so, many lives could be saved.

If weather plainly clear that definitively will be a help factor , right here fire blazes bored down the whole system so that did not ease off the situation . It’s cos towards the end no one in the cockpit was flying the plane. The captain left his seat fighting the fire. The F/O was likely unconscious. The autopilot was disconnected and primary flight displays failed due to the fire. So at the end the plane was left on its own.

I have a question, could you intentionally unpressurize the plane to put out a fire?? The fire needs oxygen and there wouldn't be much up there . The passengers and pilots can use the masks for a few minutes..

@@Kunfucious577 I'm not sure if you are familiar with how an aircraft works but the pressurization has nothing to do with the plane and how it flies, it's only for the use of the humans. So my theory would be depressurize the plane, that would trigger the oxygen masks to come down. The masks will provide oxygen to the humans while denying the fire the oxygen it needs to burn. So being that they didn't make it doing it the other way, why would you say this theory is ridiculous? And just so you know I am a pilot.

Bill did his best. Even though he missed a transmission from the captain but that’s no big deal. It’s the pilot of flight 111 failed to recognize the severity of the situation in the first place that let everyone down. So I blame this accident on the flight crew rather than the fire emergency or ATC. Lack of situational awareness and critical decision making sealed the fate for all 229 souls on board.

Definitely. By leaving the cabin bus on, smoke won’t enter the cockpit all at once causing the autopilot and primary flight displays to fail. Unfortunately turning the cabin bus off was one of the checklist items they were performing at that time.

@@RaisedLetter that being said, the reason why captain Sully was a true hero is because he did his job as a CAPTAIN. He wasn’t fixated on the best possible outcome (returning to an airport). Instead his situational awareness and decision making was superb. He was constantly analyzing the situation at hand and willing to change his mind. If that plane was flown by captain of Swissair 111, I believe the outcome will be very different.

it was a 50/50 decision.. i assume you are right but when a pilot chooses to dump fuel its to be able to even land. Planes are only fueled for the flight they take so they land with almost no fuel. This make its massively easier to land aswell as avoiding an all-consuming explosive crash landing with full tanks. He made a decision that i cant fault him for. He had no idea how long time he had or if the fire was even around the controls at all. His thinking was that since there were a fire "somewhere" he had to get rid of fuel, asap to avoid it combusting. then they can glide a landing. But they simply did not have enough time.

Safety is the most important thing. Planes should be simpler. Have fewer wires, fewer buttons and more safety plans like injector seats with parachutes for every passanger incase of impact they can fly out the plane before it crashes.

I always get a kick out of armchair "experts" deciding what the pilots "SHOULD HAVE DONE" -- When these experts have weeks to run through the options at their leisure and pick their favorite "should haves". All those people still remain dead. I have had to make instant decisions based solely on what I knew at that exact moment in time...Many while driving a car. In retrospect, knowing what I knew long after the fact was meaningless at that instant in the time of the need to act.

It seems to me there used to be a lot of pressure on pilots to follow policy and maintain schedules over a safety first and safety above all attitude. I'm not a pilot, but my instinct would be to land when there might be fire on board. We know there's limited oxygen at high altitudes, but to land you'll go through areas of progressively higher oxygen, fueling the fire.

Be it pilots, maintenance people, fuelers, baggage handlers, the companies that manufacture various parts, and those that produces the fuel...Then over time -in-use, there's component part failure. Anything traveling at a high velocity (like cars) or against gravity (like aircraft), or on water for that matter, will get people killed. Many have died from just running as fast as they can. Nobody makes it out of life alive in the long run.

My parents were involved in a plane airbus that went down over the Portuguese islands and I believe 2000, all because they put the wrong part into the engine,lucky for them they had an amazing flight crew flying that plane they made it onto one of the islands,all I have to say is double check everything on an aircraft before it takes off,I know I worked for Boeing for 27 years!!! I never gave flying a second thought. I 'hopped' from Sandy Eggo to LA, or whereever, with all the trust in the world, never, ever, even considering that any danger or malfunctions, organic or inorganic, might be an issue. I even put my beloved boys, about 7 and 8 years old, on a flight from Boise to Atlanta, without a thought that the [invaluable] Attendants would look after them; the aircraft was sound; and everyone would do their job, and beyond, when needed. The mechanics, electricians, & all whose job was to make the aircraft safe & sound, did their jobs perfectly. The flight crew would b perfect. Of these things I had faith & confidance. Thank God, they all did. My babies flew clear across America, twice, & thanks to so many consciencous people, doing their jobs well, i got my babies back. Thank YOU (plural). All of you.

There’s more than one profession where fire onboard calls for immediate action and evacuation. Aircraft along with high seas ships and boats are the top two. Of these two, obviously aircraft has more risk involved. I never would have even contemplated doing anything by the book and would have landed as quickly as possible, regulations and laws be damned. I’m sure we all hope the airline industry trains their pilots to land immediately if there is smoke on board these days. The military has as always been this way, fire onboard your craft is as serious as it gets and should always be treated this way. They had the time to pull it off and all would have lived. All those beautiful lives lost because the smoke/fire was not treated with the seriousness that it commanded. It is heartbreaking and shameful, absolutely appalling!

It may be true the plane couldn't get back, but heading out to sea to dump fuel when there is a fire on board would be poor reasoning even for a 5 yr. old. Fires are NEVER safe to delay evacuation/landing/fleeing or whatever the hell one has to do to get away from them.
