Flight have come a long way in a short time... Originally a small family run company producing novelty Elvis ukuleles for the European uke market about 12 years ago, they are now at the absolute top of the mountain of ukulele design and they listen so intently to the people who play their ukes that every new model they release seems to fit with the players that play them perfectly.
Back on their 10th anniversary, they changed the game with the first run of A10 ukuleles made of quilted and flamed Maples, Mango and Cocobolo. Made by a single luthier in batches of just 4-5 ukes; they are incredibly sought after and remain only sporadically available. The logical step for Flight as they enter their 13th year is to expand upon this series with the brand new A10 Koa.
Hawaiian Koa has always been the wood most heavily associated with the Ukulele. It chimes, it's bell like and sounds like a harp being gently plucked by an angel while you sleep on a bed of rose petals... or something like that! And, the Hawaiian K brand ukuleles have for decades (and in Kamakas case centuries) been the go-to instrument makers for Hawaiian Koa ukuleles, with only a few select instruments in recent memory breaking down that barrier with beautiful designs of their own made from premium Hawaiian Koa.
Flight have been building to a climax with recent high end instruments that reinvented the wheel or inspired people because they took the ukulele in a new direction. It feels fitting with the A10Koa model that they have come full circle and are producing a very traditional style 3 type of instrument. Each uke in this series is made from select instrument grade Hawaiian Koa with front Rosewood binding and a very sexy Ebony rosette and decorative maple trim on the bridge and around the soundhole.
Why would you choose the A10 over a Hawaiian made Koa Ukulele? Well, the A10 has a slightly bigger body than most Tenors with unique curves, it has a maple neck which feels softer and spongier on the hands than Mahogany. I find the A10 Koa to have more of a Super Tenor feel to it but with a softer, sweeter sound than say a Kanile'a or a KoAloha. You might find that those Ukuleles have more volume or more of a flamenco style snap to the sound but the Flight retains more of a traditional Ukulele sound more akin to a Kamaka.
The A10 series also has a unique slotted headstock with Gold tuners... classy, sexy - desireable stuff. Listing shows the actual Ukulele you will receive.

It sounds good, and although expensive it’s strikingly good value - sort of style 3 in looks at a style 0 price (comparing to the K brands). Another tempting option.

Thanks for the demo Alex, great run through as usual. Love maple necks and love the aesthetic statement it makes. Koa with black binding and rosette is classy. Would of liked a darker bridge to match. All in all shows Flight is a serious brand pushing the envelope, congrats to them.🎉🎉🎉

I visited a well stocked Flight dealer in Los Angeles this past Saturday and was able to take some lovely Flight ukuleles for a spin. Putting my hands on Flight ukuleles in the wild is something I've wanted to do for awhile now! I played and examined the Mustang (a tenor), the Nighthawk (a concert) and the Fireball (a tenor), which all impressed me with their good playability, nice sound, very good build quality and better than average value. I'm a particular fan of Flight's single-slot headstock design, it's darn sexy! My only real criticism is that the Nighthawk finish is an incredible fingerprint magnet that I don't think I would live with. But this A10 Koa? Based on what I've just seen and heard in your video, I'll list some concerns that spring to mind: -It's too big for me; that looks like a baritone. Heck, the lower bout almost brings to mind a tenor guitar. -I love koa and I love maple, but the two woods built together in this way look weird to me. Just my opinion, it might be just the ticket for you. -It seems like this ukulele has surpassed Opio money and is priced like a Hawaiian built Koaloha, or even almost approaching Kamaka money. It's a nice sounding ukulele but based on this sound sample, if anyone thinks it sounds as good as a less expensive Opio, or (almost...) comparably priced koa Koaloha, you might want to compare them more closely. It's marketed as a build featuring Hawaiian Koa so it seems appropriate to compare the A10 koa to other ukuleles in that class.

it is amazing - I'm very happy that thanks to the courtesy of SUS I was already able to order my copy (for me mine #1 one looks even prettier than the tested one, because I really like the small bright insert at the bottom of the body top - and it was also in hands of Alex, so I am sure it is a great one also soundwise, buildwise and so on - who knows it better than he does). I still have to wait a bit for it (but that is my fault), but I'm already super excited. I keep my fingers crossed for its safe journey. I have to admit that I am officially a new fan of SUS - this is my first (maybe just an entry level, but still, one of) premium uke, but I know one day I will buy one big K brands - and once I get my budget together I am going to simply just contact SUS and politely ask for huge advice, that I will fully trust in. I'm sure I will get the best advice from You and (seeing all that great work that you do, professionalism and such a nice and polite approach) that you'll take me seriously and basing on some information you will choose the best solution for me. Lot of love guys and keep up the awesome work that you guys are doing!
