Beautiful bird. That plane has been flying right over my house in Springboro all week. Love seeing it. May 13-19 2018.

My Dad was a ball turret gunner on B26s and B17s. Survived the war, pretty scarred up. He flew on 4 different crews. He was a little man of 5 ft 3in tall. Had to be little to comfortably fit in the Sperry Ball turret!

Thanks to those that gave all for us. Never forget or disrespect their sacrifice.

That's what makes me so mad about these riots right now. The sacrifice of my Dad and so many who DIDN'T live through the War.

I flew on board the Aluminum Overcast when it was in Crossville two years ago, just a couple of weeks before COVID shut everything down. At fifty-nine years old, it was a dream of mine since I was a nine year old kid, from fifty years ago. The crew and the plane were just unbelievable, I walked around the airplane just dazed by it all. Maybe a little star struck by the airplane.

I got to fly on this B-17G 8 years ago it was so unbelievably awesome flight. It flew us over the smokey mountains. And the landing was the smoothest landing I've ever felt.

Absolutely my favorite WWII bomber!!! So much class & style went into this design! My dad’s POW bunk mate (SL#1) was a B17 pilot. Great views!!!!!

I was fortunate to go on board the Memphis Belle in 2005 whilst it was in the Jim Webb hangar at Millington A/F base. Although she was in pieces my wife and I had our own personal tour and had an informative guide that told us some interesting stories about her. This was one if the highlights of our trip to the US and only regret that she was not in all her glory as she is now. I for one would have loved to go for a fly in her in fact any B17 would have been nice. Maybe another trip to US on another ocassion.

They discovered the Belle in what was then an aircraft disposal depot that is now Altus Air Force Base about 25 miles from my home. Several of the Tuskegee Airmen's red tailed P51s and at least 2 of "Pappy Boyington's F4U Corsairs were scrapped there. The Belle was just a couple days from being scrapped when they found her there.

I flew in this plane when it was in Dayton last year. It was a FANTASTIC experience. I took both of my kids.. So they will, for the rest of their lives be able to say the first plane they ever flew in was a World War 2 B17 bomber :)

One of my uncles ferried seventeens and twenty fours (not sure from where to where). One uncle flew the left seat for fifty missions against the Luftwaffe's best. A third uncle was a ball turret gunner that made it to the UK but not into combat. At 10k ft over England, on a training mission, the crew was taking turns in the ball turret. The bombardier gets in and spun clockwise several turns rapidly for fun. My uncle yelled down frantically "YOU'VE GOT TO COUNT THE TURNS!! IF YOU GO MORE THAN FOUR TURNS IN EITHER DIRECTION THE TURRET COMES UNSCREWED AND FALLS!!!" The bombardier freaked and started turning the other direction.... pranksters....

Flew in her about 3 years ago. What an awesome experience. However I did have a lump in my throat thinking about the boys who had to fly in them with someone shooting at them.

after all the millions spent on the Memphis belle this is what she should be doing flying. if not then why was she fully restored when cosmetic repairs would have been fine to hang her in a museum where no one even goes inside her. just hang her up like a model plane. paint and detailing all it needed.
@USAFmuseum6 жыл бұрын
Millions were not spent on this restoration. Are museum aircraft restored to airworthy status? While most of the aircraft at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force have the potential to be made airworthy, our conservation and restoration work is directed at preserving the historical integrity and accuracy of an aircraft rather than achieving modern airworthiness. In preserving historical accuracy, we choose to use original parts that may be unserviceable or non-airworthy, rather than modern substitutes. The Memphis Belle, for example, will use wiring made to original wartime specification, which does not meet today’s flight standards, rather than wiring used in modern aircraft. This is vital to our mission of preserving the record copies of these aircraft for future generations to come.
