What do cabin-crew REALLY think about pilots hitting on them, what naughty things do they do when passengers are not around and what is the best thing about the job? Find out today as I pose the most burning questions to my cabin-crew wife, Sandra!
These questions have been sent in from my Patrons as well as from the general public . I hope you will enjoy this and please ask YOUR question in the comments if you want us to do a follow up.

Back in the 1960's, Finnair ONLY hired former nurses as cabin attendants. Even in the modern days, professional level medical qualification is considered a big plus in applying for cabin crew jobs. So, a significant percentage of their cabin personnel have professional medical training. In spring 2020, when it looked like the covid-19 cases might overwhelm the intensive care capacity also here in Finland, a large amount of Finnair's cabin personnel, all of whom had qualification in nursing, were assigned to work in nursing homes. While nursing home personnel were recruited to hospitals.

If for no other reason than gossip spreads like wildfire around an airport and it can be bad for both your reputations if it gets out. I work on the ground crews and my partner is a pilot, we don’t work for the same company but my employer provides ground services for his airline and we both think it’s a good idea to just “not recognise” each other if we encounter each other at work. Thoroughly enjoyed your wife on this video. I worked for several small private US airlines in the late 80s-mid 90s, starting in flight operations, then cockpit & cabin crew scheduling. Both were interesting jobs, but I did like crew scheduling and working with the flight attendants and their manager. I really developed an appreciation for how well they were trained. For people outside the airlines, please keep in mind, the cabin crew's primary duty is to ensure the safety of the passengers in all stages of the flight. They are not glorified waiters/waitresses. They work far harder than you can ever imagine and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. One last thing: I'm really impressed by Spain requiring Flight Attendants to be licensed, including in aircraft operations. Would be great if more countries required this level of qualifications!

I used to know someone who was cabin crew for a small regional airline. When confronted with a very fearful passenger, he'd tell them, "I'll be sitting in front of you; watch me. As long as I'm smiling, everything is okay." And then he'd sit there and smile the whole time while the passenger watched him. Cabin crew don't get credit; a lot of people think it's a frivolous job. Maybe that's Pan-Am's fault, but who knows.

I can relate to your comment about watching the cabin crew's body language...I was flying into Boston on a 767, sitting towards the rear of the aircraft, and we hit some pretty nasty turbulence. I enjoy flying, and have been in some bad weather before, but this was worse than anything I remember. As my anxiety is going up, I happen to look over to see three flight attendants who were dead-heading, sitting very calmly in their seats drinking coffee (which was amusing to see how they kept it from spilling), reading, and even finishing a late lunch! I calmed right down and enjoyed the rest of the flight! I actually still tell the story and laugh about it!

I was a passenger on a flight back from DFW to AMS in the late '90s when I noticed one of the cabin crew was terribly pale and sitting against a bulkhead. She told me she always got horrible stomach cramps at altitude. She had been doing this work for some years at this point. That's dedication. I felt sorry for her having to go through this but her dedication really stuck with me. It was truly impressive.

We cleaners do it too. When we have an intermediate or deep clean with no pilots, cabin crew or engineers around, someone always gets into the overhead compartments and we always get into the PA system to play music at full volume, make silly versions of the PA announcements pax usually hear from the pilots and bring our snacks on board. We sing, we dance, we play and we work. My best experience of this was aboard a 787-800. Good times. But in answer to your question, I think it’s just because it’s a silly challenge and something of a tradition to get into the overhead compartments. Admittedly we have a better time of it than the cabin crew because we wear practical clothes.

My personal cabin crew story.... Some years ago I was a passenger on a non-stop Virgin flight from Heathrow to Niigata, Japan. A colleague and I had seats in the first row of business class immediately behind the first class rows. We were next to an exit, & I had the aisle seat with a cabin crew jumpseat directly facing me. We had pushed back and were taxiing onto the runway. The safety video was playing from drop down screens and during this, a flight attendant was standing in the aisle less than 1m from me pointing out the exits, etc. I thought they were leaving it very late because they were only part way through the safety presentation and the plane had arrived at the end of the runway. All of a sudden the engines went to full thrust and we started accelerating down the runway. At this time all the cabin crew were still standing in the isles, and the young lady close to me tumbled into my lap. I was being pressed into my seat and she was being pressed into me. We on clung on to each other for a few minutes (it seemed longer) until the plane was airborne and she could move over to the jump seat. I looked up and down the plane and several other cabin crew had fallen down in the aisles as well. She was quite embarrassed, apologised several times, and we got some extra freebies for the rest of the 12.5 hr flight.

Huh, a bit similar to my own experience as pax several years ago before I joined the ground crews. Only this time we were in cruise, a couple hours into the flight and we evidently hit turbulence without any warning. Nothing, not even the seatbelt signs were on. It was dumb luck that few of the trolleys were out. One of the flight attendants just happened to be near me talking with another passenger and the turbulence was bad enough that she didn’t stand a chance of keeping her balance and I could see the start of her arms flailing to grab something or help balance her. I don’t quite know why, I wasn’t especially brave back in my early twenties but I basically grabbed her and pulled her towards me. She definitely cooperated with the motion and she basically fell onto my lap and we held onto each other until the turbulence stopped. I won’t lie, it hurt when she fell onto me but I didn’t care about that in the slightest. Finally she got back to her feet and was grateful for my help and I got free food for the rest of the flight. I didn’t care about that either. I just didn’t want her to get hurt and I’d do the same again. It’s interesting that so many years later other cabin crew helped me when I needed help so, it’s all good.

I'm a dual RN and Paramedic, and PPL. I had a job for several years training pilots and flight attendants in in-flight medical emergencies, and how to stay healthy overseas. I was in the middle of class one day in Long Beach, CA teaching about bird strikes. We took a break, and everyone in the FBO was looking at an Airbus in the Hudson River live on TV. A moment I will never forget! Thanks for remembering us little guys in your video :)

As a flight attendant I can say turbulence is fun kind of like a roller coaster! ... if I'm in my seat with everything secure. If we didn't know it was coming and are in the aisle or don't have time to secure heavy objects in the galley it can be scary. I'm surprised she didn't mention many fas are injured by turbulence because we can't just sit with our seat belts on the whole time like passengers.
@Asptuber
@Asptuber 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! "Like a roller coaster" is exactly how I think of it as a passenger. Turbulence is an extra, something you hope for. And sadly, as a not-so-frequent-flyer, rarely get. Four times out of five any warnings of turbulence turns out to be a dud. As a child (semi-frequently flying a domestic hop of about an hour) I was always hoping that the normal DC-9 would have been switched for a Fokker Friendship F27. Mostly because it usually meant a more bumpy ride. The negative of the F27 was more engine noise in the cabin. Longer flight time was both positive and negative: more flying, yay, but longer in that noise. Positive was also the high wings: you could get a seat under the wing and be able to see all the details of the gear extending and retracting. Positive was also that my ears usually hated how the DC-9s pressurised. Don't know why. At around the same age I also got to fly the DC-10 and the DC-8 (and the F27), and they were never that bad. Landing in a DC-9 often meant ear pain for at least a day afterwards.)

Once when I was a young woman, during a flight we hit unexpected and quite substantial turbulence. A flight attendant happened to be talking to another passenger near me and started to fall. She didn’t stand a chance of keeping her balance so I grabbed her and pulled her gently towards me. She fully cooperated with the motion and fell onto my lap. The impact hurt and forced me to partially exhale but we held onto each other until the turbulence stopped and settled before she finally stood up. She was very grateful and I saw that a few of her colleagues had fallen though none seemed injured. I got free food for the rest of the flight but that’s not why I did it. I just wanted to prevent her from being hurt.

I work below wing in the states for a big name american carrier. I can't tell you how many flight attendants don't know what we do. Flight attendants do much more then just pour drinks. Airline pilots do much more than just fly the plane. And baggage handlers do much more than just load bags.

@@rachelduke1580 many flight attendants have no clue what we do. We divide the bags into a few groups. First local bags, so the passengers who are not transferring can get their bags in a timely manner. Then and depending on the plane we divide the bags into international and domestic transfers. We also make sure to meet the plane when it arrives as we are the wing walkers, making sure the plane can come into the gate safely. We then do a walk around the plane (twice) to make sure the plane is fine. First when it comes in and also before it leaves. We make sure their is water on the plane for things like coffee. We put on air on the plane to make sure the plane is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We also load passengers bags into the plane, also mail and other items that need to go onto them. All this making sure the weight of the plane is balanced. When you see us on the gate bridge we are looking for bags that can not fit when passengers are boarding or if the it's taking a while for them to board. If their something wrong with the engine and needs an air start we do air starts to make sure the plane can take off. At the very end we push the plane out safely. All this in all types of weather. I've worked outside when it feels well over 120 and -50 Fahrenheit. Now I know I couldn't be a flight attendant, I enjoy sleeping in my bed every night. I enjoy not starting at the crack of dawn and don't go to an airport or home until after midnight. I can't deal with people always having a smile on face when they are acting like buffoons. All I'm saying is all the jobs we do are important and no job is more important then others. We are all working for the customers and we need each other to make sure the customer returns flying with our airline, whatever airline it is.

On the passenger ships I worked, I don't remember a time when we needed some kind of medical person when we didn't have, at a minimum one nurse aboard. Ships from 850 passengers to about 110, voyages 2 hours to one week, crew 7 to 63. Usually, Medivac wasn't an option , or was hours away. Our Pursers (Min. of 1 per ship) were trained as "Medical Person In Charge" - more of less the equivalent of an EMT, with a doctor-sponsor available by radio to talk the purser through it or approve of them doing some "conditional procedure". They had yearly or every-2-years refreshers. That was International law, by the 1990s, for the U.S., earlier for Europe & Scandanavia.
