Thanks Josh for the video, I've successfully braided up a six loop motor for my Spitfire using your other braiding video, once you've done it a few times it's really easy isn't it? Looking forward to the test glides.

Good tip, applying the lube in the bag. Seems much easier than putting on gloves and doing it by hand.

Mr Josh I see you wound the strands CW at first then when you brought the end to join the other end couldnt see what way you were twisting it to get the braid.............while im at it how much should the motor be sticking out of the nose?? or what % of the model length ??

I would think that you would not get full exposure of lubricant on the rubber that way. Don Ross's book detailed a tedious but effective lubrication method. I only say that because I would think that you would want to lubricate it before braiding and do it simultaneously while stretching the rubber.

Thank you. That helps a lot. For organizing your work place. Try a book or KZbin for the Japanese 5S system.

I learned 5S at work in the 90's. It's great in a print shop but hard to maintain at home!

I really enjoy your videos, I am getting back into rubber powered aircraft again it's been years since I have build stick construction aircraft. I have always had a problem with painting. In the 60's we used airplane dope but when I finished my models they lo9oked good but didn't fly very well as they were very heavy, How do you paint these without adding a lot of weight? What are you using for glue? I'm sure sionce the 60's a lot as changed in the model industry and a lot of new techniques are being used I need a little guidance.
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 4 жыл бұрын
Still using the same glues. Trick is to use as little as possible. I use at most two coats of nitrate dope, thinned to only 20% or so. I use that as the covering adhesive too, two thinned coats on the entire structure before covering, activated with acetone after laying down the covering. Most of my structure is assembled with CA these days out of sheer laziness.
@normbenjamin
@normbenjamin 4 жыл бұрын
@@joshuawfinn so to add color you use different color coverings right? In the old days we got covering material only in white in the kit. Then we had to paint or fly white. Originally I used Ambroid adhesive not very strong and pretty heavy. Thank yo9u for the response I'm ready to begin a build now.

@@normbenjamin you can also color the tissue with colored dope, Rit dye, or even rattle can spray paint if you just use really light coats (i did this after doping the Gipsy)

Amazoom 1300, sized for a hot McCoy .61. Unfortunately they're really twitchy and I'm not likely to ever fly it. Might be convinced to build something else of similar size though. Maybe a rear fin Satellite 1300. ;)

The big one? That's an Amazoom 1300, and upscale of Stan Hill's 400 sq in design from 1955. My wife likes the crazy oversized woodwork, so it became a living room decoration

@@joshuawfinn Amazoom was designed by a woman. No kidding
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 4 жыл бұрын
@@tomryan9718 Amazon was the one designed by Stan's wife, at least based on my research. Unfortunately I've never seen one of those. It's a little more boxy, but a slightly older design too. By all accounts both of them must have been brilliant designers and fliers. Amazoom is NOT an easy airplane to trim. Haven't heard anything about Amazon.

I know people in the rubber powered community call this braiding but technically isn't this more of a furling or a furled rubber motor?
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 4 жыл бұрын
Probably is. I call it what everyone else does to avoid confusion.

It is the same technique used in ropemaking, but hemp strands are not as stretchy, so requires a lot more force to create the twist in the rope.
