Produced by California National, FLIGHT was a much beloved aviation TV show that unfortunately only ran for one season 1958-1959 (38 episodes total). Featuring dramatic stories from the annals of the U.S. Air Force, the series starred Gen. George C. Kenney. California National also produced SILENT SERVICE, a wonderful drama about submarines. In this episode, THE DART, a supersonic gunnery exercise takes a dramatic turn that causes a terrible accident resulting in a board of inquiry. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFi...

The footage shown where the bottle and other things were floating around exhibit zero-g, not negative-g. If the pilot had been experiencing negative-g, the bottle, etc., would have hit the canopy. Not to say negative-g wouldn't have produced the disorientation that caused the shootdown, just saying...

Sigh. Century series beauties, Super Sabre and the Drat. sorry Dart. Can still see the Revel Models I made all those years ago. However the acting is B movie standard. But who cares. The planes know how to act their parts so I m happy.

Great show for it's time, and the acting and aerial sequences are fine, don't expect this to be modern film, as styles of acting and film making have changed tremendously since 1958.

I remember this series! Through the years, I mixed up it's theme song with that of Twelve O'Clock High! Too bad it didn't have a longer run. Does anyone know where the sound track can be found?

Instinct to shoot the aircraft, this kept him alive. I don't stand on the edge of heights. Why, because I feel like I'll throw myself off. Chickens are 100% instinct, not a brain in their heads. Just because we have brains, doesn't mean we have no instict.

And now our pilots have G-suits to prevent this. A fairly thrilling episode. At first it was debatable what really happened. But thanks to the flight surgeon's diligence they found out it was negatie Gs that caused the problem. Thanks for sharing this episode.

"G suits" have nothing to do with negative "g". The bladders in a "g" suit inflate under positive "g" to put pressure on the legs and abdomen in an effort to keep the pilot's blood flow to his brain from being reduced. When under positive "g", the blood is pulled, by gravity, from the top of the body towards the feet. The loss of blood flow to the brain is what causes "tunnel vision", "black out" and, eventually, loss of consciousness. Under negative "g", the blood flow is the opposite, with the blood being forced into the head, which causes "red out", burst capillaries in the eyes, and more. A "g" suit can do nothing to prevent this, in fact it is designed to not inflate in anything but positive "g" conditions.

Fun vintage show. Boring if you're not an airplane fan but cool if you are. Yes, the acting isn't great by today's standards but was typical for a TV series of the time. Found a goof at 5:17. The white string pulled taught on the side of his helmet is to hold the speakers off the ear when you're putting the helmet on and taking it off. It's supposed to be released to let the speakers rest against your ear when the helmet is in use. :)

Is that why Captain Bennett's name tag was reversed, or did the lab goof up when printing the film?

Yes but, it was primarily experienced by stunt pilots who every so often flew right into the ground. It was not part of basic flight training and it isn't even until this day until one takes advanced training.
