Why not consult the original design as a base? The swanston street facade was originally meant to be a glass and wrought iron structure similar to St Pancras station in London. I am worried that this competition will give melbourne yet another clashing modern design that will fail to compliment the Edwardian/Victorian surroundings like how Melbourne Museum and Federation Square spoiled the effect of the exhibition building and St Pauls.

Hi there. Both. The competition’s objectives are to improve transport function, restore a cultural heritage icon, increase the value of the public building and integrate the station with its surrounding precinct. The competition’s statement of key objectives will be posted on the competition website in the near future.

Question: is the 'new' design for Flinders Street primarily supposed to look good, or primarily to improve the flow of passengers and trains?

@stikibunn That's a great idea, and we think anyone who enters this competition will look carefully at the original structure and design - in fact we've posted the original drawings on our website. Restoring and protecting the station's heritage is a key objective of the competition as well as taking into account the way the restoration will 'fit' with the Melbourne CBD.
