Awesome video. Very thorough. I knew nettle was used by native americans for cordage, and it's a healthy snack. Now it's a top notch tinder bundle!

No reply necessary. Thanks for sharing. Terrific discovery. Had we been universally literate very early on, l dare say we could have extracted all seasonal lists of suitable spark catching material. Which may make this a rediscovery. All Credit to you, and for sharing too.

OMG !!!! This is incredible work...OK I haven't actually tried it myself YET...but OMG. Like you say, the fact that nettles, of all things, something as common and easy to find as that,....well done guys, I think you may have nailed it. Next day off from wizarding is dedicated to this - I truly hope it is as you say. And the pestle which remains from a broken mortar in my kitchen is now going into my knapsack as a must carry Item too. Worth the weight lol. This dilemma has been on my mind for a very long time - how to make the fire that makes the char which makes the fire? - Our ancestors would probably laugh like hell if they saw us poncing around like we do. If I get results with this, I will celebrate with a nice cup of nettle tea. I think a few comments are kinda missing a point, saying it requires time to prepare etc - it only needs to work once and then you can make char with the results. Wizard is impressed👍.

As I remember in your flint and steel video, you could process both water leaf and burdock with your hands. I don’t have any nettle at my house but a lot of burdock, and I think a little water leaf. So I can’t wait to see the other burdock a water leaf video
@charlesartificer21582 жыл бұрын
I have hand processed Burdock and got it to take a spark. But only the brown dead leaf which is dry. Tried drying out a green leaf but it would not take a spark. Video is on my channel. Hope this helps.

It just doesnt work o.O I prepared them for like 15min with my hands... ill let them dry again now for like 1h and try it again 😆 Kind of frustrating to see you beeing so successful 👍 As always thanks for the great video Ill keep trying ^^ Ps: im from austria and its pretty tricky to not get confused with the words: try, dry, dried and tried 😆

Good on you for making a follow up video on this subject. I went out and found the driest stalks I could find. Could not get them to catch spark. Was starting to think you were utilizing witchcraft! I see now I have more work to do.

It definitely took us some time and practice (and patience) as well and sometimes it does take a few minutes before we can get it to work. Hope you stick with it.

I am curious as to why winter nettle can't catch spark as well as spring and processed. If would be interesting if you would find winter equivalent to charless flint and steel tinder.

That is really interesting. You might not remember but we had a brief conversation in the comments last year in your first nettle flint and steele video. We were discussing about the condition of the nettle, old or new. Now, I tried it again this summer but failed miserably. I used great, healthy, flowering summer nettle, picked around two weeks ago. Immediately peeled it and leaved to dry in sun for a couple of hours. Processed it thoroughly, to get this fluffy bundle. And still, after all that, I couldn't get any of the sparks to ignite it. And there were many sparks. From last year I upgraded to a new striker and got a hold on to real flint rocks. Now it makes me wonder, does flowering have something to do with it? Probably not because you used one as well. But I am not done with this, for sure. :)

I do remember. Sounds like you’re doing everything right. Definitely don’t give up on it. It’ll be a great moment when you eventually get it!

I got some stinging nettle and dried it for a little bit, don’t know exactly, then I worked it in my hands, rubbed by on the finer side of a farriers rasp, then tried it out. No luck. Gonna try it tomorrow but no luck. I’m gonna try some burdock soon though.

Hello, I have been enjoying your videos lately. I found your information very intriguing. A question that I have can nettles be found in Wyoming. I have been obsessed with bushcraft fire making. It's just not a good day without creating a fire without matches or a lighter. So, with watching your experiments with stinging nettles, I have got to learn how to do this. Where can I find this wonderful plant in Wyoming?
@wildernessstrong6131 Жыл бұрын
Try this map. Click on Wyoming and you should be able to see which counties in Wy have stinging nettle. Great to hear about your fire making obsession! www.eddmaps.org/distribution/usstate.cfm?sub=6569

Have you guys tried cleavers
@wildernessstrong61312 жыл бұрын
We’ve tried about 80 different plants now and made some exciting recent discoveries, but I don’t believe cleaver has been tried yet. We have a lot of it and it would be an amazing addition to the list if it works.

@@wildernessstrong6131 I tried it, goes very hard and straw like when dried, I'm thinking that it might need to be processes fresh first

I'm confused. Do you use the outer skin, the inner part, or both when you prepare it?

We peel the outer fibers off the nettle stalk, then dry and process.

Now yall need to experiment with fibers and the Rudiger Roll a.k.a. the Fire Roll. If you need a reliable reference, use BoggyCreekBeast here on KZbin he was the first to introduce it to KZbin and has already tested a fair amount of fibers and "accelerants" or fillers. I believe you could easily use just the nettle and nothing else and get an ember. Could be incredibly useful If you need to make fire and lost your flint and steel.

Do stinging nettle leaves (dried green) work?
@wildernessstrong6131 Жыл бұрын
We’ve tried the leaves but they did not work like the peeled fibers.

This os absolutely revolutionary, a great survival knowledge and a question arises: did our ancestors know this? Could they have used this for lighting their fires? It surely seems more convenient than charing materials to start a fire. Thank you for sharing!
@wildernessstrong61312 жыл бұрын
A great question. It’s certainly been more convenient for us. We love researching and learning what methods were used in the past and it’s especially exciting when we learn that something we’re doing that we thought was original was done way before our time.
@sipapito Жыл бұрын
Is it faster just to make fire with fire? You still have the process of getting your tinder ready with stinging nettle.I mean don’t get me wrong you don’t like having making fire with fire but the amount of time is needed to process stinging nettle I would rather keep some char cloth on my tinder pouch.👍🏻

Processed green nettle good, processed dead winter nettle bad! But as a tinder bundle Winter nettle is good? Have you tried dogbane? I have heard that is also a very good substitute for char cloth.
@wildernessstrong6131 Жыл бұрын
Yes dead dry Winter nettle will make a great smoldering tinder for matches, friction Fire, and ferro but won’t take a spark from flint/steel consistently unless charred. We’ve only made a few attempts with dogbane unsuccessfully but plan on trying again in the future.
