In this video we start a fire using chaga fungus, flint, and a Scottish steel fire kit. This is a great bushcraft survival skill to know how to do. This is part of a fire making series I am doing which includes videos on: Friction fire - Bow Drill Fire, Hand Drill Fire, Fire Plow, Fire Thong, Fire Piston, and more.

I love stuff like this. It'd be so cool if you could regularly show catch and cooks using fire like this, with the rats/squirrels you catch, rather than feeding them to the wildlife.

I'm from Thailand and have with me a kit. The tinder(kapok tree fluff) is packed in bamboo, the top is charred from the previous lighting, you would add tinder from the bottom and keep the char on top. The steel is a broken file. My housekeeper got me this when she visited her dad in the northeast of Thailand. He used to light ciggarette with flint until he quit smoking.

You guys should be able to source the fiber / fluff from the fishtail palm. Its fantastic. Check out Dalem Gumino on you tube.😝🤘 you could soak that in potassium Nitrate, like i do my Cattails same principle.

Love this stuff, keep it up, please! It is nice to see these methods. At some point it would be interesting to see things like how to find dry fire starting materials when the conditions are far from ideal, such as heavy rain or snow. I've done it just for practice, but never for an emergency.

Nice video! Try Neanderthal style, it's quite similar. Use tinder fungus + manganese dioxide. Then, make sparks with pyrite + flint (handaxe would be nice). When you caught the ember, add it to the tinder bundle.😁

I don't think Otzi had iron (certainly not steel). I think he had pyrite, which has iron and iirc sulphur in it. I wonder if you could make a fire with that! That would be great.
@marcogenovesi8570

yes pyrite is the mineral you should use if you don't have other metal stuff. Its name literally means "rock that makes fire" in ancient greek

It is quite possible Ötzi had a piece of iron or steel. The Iron Age occurred between 1200 B.C. and 600 B.C and possibly earlier in certain regions.
@johneubank8543
@johneubank8543 Жыл бұрын
@@ezee51 I looked it up - Otzi had pyrite in his fire starting kit. But yes, iron was rare but known to humas before the Iron Age. King Tut had an iron dagger made of meteoric iron. We know pre-iron-age people used pyrite and flint onto tender to create fire. There's lots of evidence of this (again, Otzi had pyrite). And yes, we made iron before the iron age, just not much of it. We didn't have good methods for mass-producing iron tools, armor and weapons - what we made from iron ore, early on, was thought to be low quality and abandoned, until we worked out how to better smelt and make iron. Meteoric iron objects, however, were highly prized and quite valuable. Otzi was pre-bronze-age. The bronze age may have just started in other parts of the world, when he lived, but for his part of Europe - they were in the copper age. He had a copper axe and no bronze artifacts. His people likely did not know how to make bronze - they may have needed to trade for their copper - could have gotten ingots or premade tools. But Otzi was not iron age, for what it's worth - copper age.
