I saw the Gazoo episodes in reruns about 1969; I was about eight years old! When I started reading Green Lantern comics (back issues from the early 60s) in my head I gave the Guardians of the Universe Harvey Korman's Gazoo voice!

Gazoo was my favorite character on The Flintstones. At the time, I couldn't have imagined anyone funnier than Harvey Korman (except Tim Conway). I had no idea Mr. Korman was the voice of Gazoo until minutes ago. Great history lesson.

I do not understand why people hated the character, he barely showed up, a pity that his story was left open, since the show was canceled, he wanted him to be able to return home and receive pardon from his people, or else his story could end up in the Jetsons in the future.

That's easy, Gazoo was introduced into the show midway through the final season and is considered by some to be an absurd character who alters the premise and dynamic of the show, he is often cited by fans and critics of the show as being an example of the show's having "jumped the shark". Also, the Great Gazoo was like Seven from Married With Children, Cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch, Scrappy-Doo from Scooby-Doo, and Poochie on Itchy & Scratchy in terms of unnecessary additions of characters.

The Flintstones lost all credibility at that point. Before that, it was a fairly accurate representation of stone-age life. Never understood why they thought Gazoo was needed.

Going off the theory that the Flintstones were taking place in a post apocalyptic nuclear fallout, the great gazoo did tell Fred and barney that he was there as a punishment from his planet. I think gazoo was one of the masterminds for introducing nuclear fission to humanity and now has to enlighten those left behind from the diaster. So he can't go back until he helps humanity create a better way of life for themselves. Because he's an evil bastard. He's like a fallen angel that insists he's helping but causes more chaos. So I guess he's here to learn things about himself too.
