The movement of the water deep underneath the surface counterbalances the movement of the water at the ssurface. This keeps the ship extremely stable in large ocean waves. Constant up/down/side-side movement is not conducive to delicate scientific equipment.

So.... the shape of the boat at the bottom helps cancel off the waves + its standing so more wave cancelation?
@scrippsoceanography4 жыл бұрын
Flipping puts 300 feet of the platform below the surface, in water that is not moving with surface undulations, and the shape and taper of the hull are designed to minimize the effects of surface waves.
@limaechonumismatics4 жыл бұрын
Where does the crew stand when the flip happens? How much. Force does the top of the ship experience while it is floating. How does it not snap?
@scrippsoceanography4 жыл бұрын
The flips take about half an hour, which gives the crew and science team plenty of time to adjust as the walls turn into the floors, though generally they're supposed to be outside, away from the shifting furniture. The structure is made of 700 tons of tri-ten steel, so it's very strong. Much of the original design work went into ensuring the structure doesn't twist along its length, so that instruments on the bottom are pointed in the same direction as instruments at the top. There's more information available on our website at scripps.ucsd.edu/ships/flip
