Noob here, sorry if it sounds dumb, isnt AM more long range than FM based on the fact that you can catch AM radio signals from hundreds of kms away? Or is it because FM requires lower power for the range provided?

The frequency of the broadcast typically matters more for range than the transmission mode. The FM broadcast band used to actually be lower at ~40 MHz (a bit above the shortwave band) in the US but the people at RCA were concerned that the range might go too far so the FM band moved up to 88 MHz and we have stations throwing out up to 100kW of power and only getting like 50 miles of range.
