About the disc-brake and quick-release: Always tighten the quick release with the bike standing on the floor. Put the wheel on, place the bike on the floor, open and re-tighten the quick release. Works for me.

With quick release disk breaks wheels I always like to adjust the wheels when the bike is on the ground. Let the weight of the bike put them in the right spot. Works most of the times

Doing this all the time at work. Setting wheels with the bikes own weight so they're always in the same spot, then set the brakes up and continue doing the wheel setup process so usually never have to touch the caliper setting again.

​@@fabianalejandrodiazjimenez3947A few times I've put wheels on with the frame upside down resting on the seat and bars the rim is too far over when I get the bike back on it's wheels and the brake pads rub, I open the quick release and it fixes itself most times then when I reclose the quick release the brake pads stop rubbing unless the pads or calipers are out of alignment, just had it happen earlier today when I put brand new quick release wheels on my full suspension mountain bike after I got the old tires put on the new rims and I only had to help it fix the wheel alignment a little bit and readjust the brakes so the pads wouldn't rub on the tire sidewalls.

quick release has a point.. Well it is always adjusting, yeah maybe, but this is less of a problem.. It is a problem of a lesser extent. It counts if the wheel is trued, if the spokes are tensioned, if the gears changing in the way it is planned, the headset set up. The seat clamp not overdriven to a point of no return. The seatpost should have some minimal special grease too.. It just moves when the diameter of the Seatpost can have slight differences. That can happen. I adjusted the brakes yes on the ground. Either you look if the disc is in the middle and then screw one side right.. I go from up to down. Watch out to have that disc in the middle when you screw .. Maybe take sure the hub does not move LOL that could make it more troublesome to ever have it the "right" way..

No, you have to put the bike on the ground with your ribcage on the seat with 100% of your weight THEN wiggle the top of the tyre left and right till you feel it stop clunking, then tighten the quick release

The number of good bikes that are thrown away is astounding. I pull 6-10 from the metal pile at the town transfer station every year. I'm talking about 10-30 year old bikes that were upper mid to high end bikes when they were new. Most look like they were rode a few times then tucked into the garage or basement until someone decided to get rid of it. Usually the only parts that need replacing are dryrotted tires and tubes, brake pads and sometimes a torn saddle. Plenty of newer WalMart bikes end up on the pile, too. These can be good to salvage tires, saddles and brake pads. Someone who buys a $250 reconditioned bike from me doesn't care if it has cheap tires. He only wants tires to have good tread and hold air.

Love the schraeder conversion tip. I have a high-end e-mtb (turbo levo). The obsession with presta on wide rims is baffling. I convert to tubeless schraeder on all my bikes and I don’t need to mess with adapters etc. not just for “regular people”. I use a drill BTW/. The reamer looks like a PITA. I use a different size drill for hub side and tire side for a hollow rim.

Schraeder tubless just makes so much more sense. I've seen so many alumimum tubless presta valves broken - because they offer NO give way when pumping up. Either go full brass presta values or go schraeder where the larger size is so much more sturdy. With tubes the valve has some give way, not tubeless.

Glad to see someone taking a stance against presta valves.. I really don't see the point unless you have the most narrow wheel on a road bike. It's just a hassle and they always bend.. Regular shrader valves are also so much more universal. Just roll up to a gas station and you can pump your tires. No special tools needed.

Presta valves have their uses if you’re a track, time trial or road race cyclist but you’re right: for us normies and most recreational riders, Schrader just presents less potential for hassle. And hassle takes the fun out of cycling. I don’t need any more excuses to avoid taking my bike out 😂

The only substantial downside is you can't pump up your tyres at a petrol station. The slightly more complicated handling is something you get used to. And they supposedly keep the air in a little better which I like.

​@@Jacksparrow4986well yes, I know, but I don't run ultra skinny 23c anymore that really necessitate Presta since my racing bike got replaced by an old Dave Quinn 'cross bike with relatively kinder geometry and clearance for wider tyres, hence lower pressures. One day I'll grow up and graduate to tubeless, if only to install something like Vittoria's Air-Liners for maximum peace of mind (fixed too many flats / replaced tubes with cold fingers), so I may return to Presta again 😅

@1972hermanoben I don't think you graduate to tubeless, I think a good part of it is hopping on the hype train (check out the hassle of tubeles vs. Cheap tpu from china). I don't know the exact difference in air tightness, I just very rarely check the tyre pressures and am happy when they are close to ideal and still okay. When looking at other peoples bikes, my most frequent complaints are loose mudguards (I live in a road with cobblestones, so I hear any loose mudguards), too low tyre pressure and unlubed chains. So, I'm not sure if the "lower frequency of pumpups is ok" beats the "slightly easier to pump up." I'm all presta (I believe), so changing everything over would be a hurdle that I would need good reasons for. In germany presta feels dominant to me.

Schrader are only good for about 45psi unless you want to pump your tyres up like every day. I want to hold 65psi on my 26er sporting some rather delicious Sri Lankan made 26x1.50 slicks made by DSI and I'm struggling with Schraders. A lot. The hole in my deep dish rim (no pun intended 😂) well it needs a plug of some sort to accommodate presta, maybe bike Farmer from Wisconsin could offer some advice.

I find Schrader Valves annoying when pumping up a tyre, because I often can't get the pump off the valve fast enough. I especially mean pumps that hold onto the valve by pulling a lever.

I'm also not a fan of the presta valve aka sclaverand valve. If you have a flat and want to pump some air into it on a petrol station, you always gonna need an adapter. But if you have a shrader valve, you could just put some air into it, just like on a car. I mean there is a reason why all cars and planes do have these valves...😅

My favorite relatively recent "investment" was a flush cut pair of side cutters. I think they were $3 at Harbor Freight Racing and it's so nice not having sharp edges from the zip-tie tail trying to tear my HF gloves.

I haven't been a mechanic for as long as you have, but I always adjust new RD hangers. the frame is rarely straight. that might be why it's not perfectly shifting.

I understand your rationale on the schrader thing. Most non-bikies will never understand the advantages of the presta valve. And oh the disc brake fad! This a very good reason there's not one disc brake bike in my fleet of 6. Everytime I go on a group ride I hear that "zing-zing-zing" of the disc brakes dragging. I hate riding around a noisy bike.

This old Deore derailleurs and newer Alivio, always end up with a lot of pivot play prematurely. I always check it when it’s in high gear rear low gear front. It causes shifting issues, as you experienced

pro tip: cutting zip ties, use nail clippers - absolutely flush cut.

Good idea, I have used some pliers with curved blades, which are meant for mani pedi as well lol. At least when I find them from time to time. When I don't find them I often just melt the plastic with a lighter for one second or so. The plastic starts to bubble pretty fast which leaves a rough surface, therefore only melting it very short and then ending up with a smooth surface instead. I think it can also be molten again when it is rough, it only melts even faster. Or pressing down on the molten plastic to flatten it, but it should not be too hot of course and the zip tie should better not be very big in that case. Nail Clippers also have curved blades like the pliers, which leave no sharp edges when the zip tie gets cut at the very end. I now also have to put a Nail Clipper in my tool box.

Aluminium frames can hold up to about 5 to 10 years, afaik, maybe even longer but at some point they will crack. That is also why I like Steel frames more, when taken care of they last very long. They are also more elastic and less rigid than Aluminium frames, which makes riding the bike more comfortable.

@@bkefrmr I disagree wholly. I've raced NICA for my entire high school career, and many of my friends (myself included) work and pay for their own bikes and entrance fees. I think it's a very approachable, and, most importantly, FUN sport. NICA is one of the only interscholastic sport that I find offers fun if you want, but can also provide that competitive fix if the racer chooses so. The great thing as well is, while it might have a higher barrier to entry than a sport like soccer, the cost of a bicycle is an investment that you can use for transportation as well. So not only will the money be well spent on a bicycle that you can race and have fun on, but it will save you LOADS of gas money and even potentially save you from buying a car as well. NICA has changed my life with the people and places it's taken me, so I encourage every kid with an MTB to mow a few lawns and try it.

I stopped riding bikes when i turned 16 also but, it was 40 years before i started again. When I was a 1st year apprentice my journeyman taught me to twist the cable tie off so it doesn't leave a sharp edge. Do I ever agree with you on disc brakes, unless you are working your way down a mountain trail at high speed I see no reason why rim brakes are not adequate and a whole lot easier to adjust.

that's the perfect bike that'll get a kid many many years of enjoyment. call me old fashioned, but I so much prefer a 3x8 or 3x9 drivetrain with well spaced cassette gearing. none of those MASSIVE granny gear cassette. $400 was about what my kid's new 24" cost back in 2016, and if that used 4300 were available I'd have looked hard at it for him. after all he put just about the exact same scratches on it as that one has! 😂

Ever heard of Dingle Speed Drive Train? It is a single speed rear cog with a 3x crank set. I assume the wear of the chain is less severe and many use mainly the middle chain ring, which reduces the wear even more. I read about someone suggesting to drive on a big chain ring up to the third biggest cog, because the bigger cogs don't wear off as fast as the small ones. I now often only use the third biggest cog the whole time for all three chain rings (3×8). I still haven't counted how many teeth it has. I might try to set up a Dingle Speed Drive Train

I've bought multiple "AS-IS" bikes from Bicycle Blue Book before (they are local). Bicycle Blue Book put NOTHING into the bike other than photograph it and list it. They won't accept anywhere near the price they quote you on the "value" of the bike. Even their "AS-IS" bikes are priced higher than any worth they show you. So they F'up the rest of the used market by giving folks the impression that you're charging WAY too much when you sell a used bike. It's a racket they have going.

Personally i would never buy a bike with a big frame for tall people, cause you could only sell it to a big person. But if you have a midsized or small frame, you can almost always adjust the height for the new owner via the seatpost and stem.

I once bought a frame from ebay and somehow wasn't aware of the size of it. I ended up having a 23,5" frame at home, which is too big for me. After a while I had also put it back on ebay and it sold rather quick. There seems to be a demand for bigger bikes or frames.

If its got 26" wheels, it is long dead on marketplace. Even full XTR bikes with 26" wheels are dead. Not theres anything wrong with them, but nobody wants them. A friend has over 150 semi vintage bikes in his backyard, a hoarder. People call him and just want them hauled away, no charge. There they sit. Local craigsist there are guys with 60 bicycles for sale....150.00 each and they sit for ever and ever.

I'm curious if your business insurer grilled you about the liability of used bicycles? Big product manufacturers get sued alot (Trek) but what if you miss a crack in a head tube? Perhaps where you live there aren't many lawyers cycling around

I learned how to tune disk brakes from channels like this. There are so many nuances to the job. Just did this job today and grateful for thru axles! I'm too fussy about bike repairs that even with my experience I'd probably lose money. I wrench only for myself.

Disk brakes + quick release. Bike upside down on the ground, spin the wheel, squeeze the brake slowly (this centers the disk & wheel) then clamp down on the lever. it's never failed me, centers up every time, no rubbing. I take both wheels off my bike every time I chuck it in the car and attach the wheels at the trailhead, 2-3 times a week.

This was a very informative video for me. Never had a bike with disc brakes. Never even saw how they operated much less calibrating them. All of my bikes have cantilever brakes. That's my brake system of choice. It's nice to get a glimpse of the functionality and fine-tuning process of the disc brake. Even though I'm probably never gonna own a bike with that system. Just like you, I'm not at all a fan. I love watching, listening and learning. I hope you never change up. Excellent content Bike Farmer!

You're right about presta valves - I've had to explain to so many people how they work. I would never have thought of drilling out a rim to convert to schrader tho.
