considering the ultimate goal is a quest cape it seems to make more sense to me that you should really go for the quest completions over just buying upgrades, but I guess if the upgrade can speed up money making process moreso than the quest locked item would that could be the more efficient way to go about it. Comes down to your or I guess Trader Steve's personal preference(s)

Those dead chunks will let you get closer to being done with the desert diary for some free xp.

If you need to, you could make Very Expensive Items be worth more than 1 chunk. This would help cut into the amount of work and grind you have to put in for the series (most of which we don't see), and potentially help ensure you have the chunks you need for a quest cape. So long as the more expensive items are still less EFFICIENT, it should still be in the spirit of things while giving you a bit more control.
