OMG. And the question of how we see this as fun begins.... Loonie is attacking British food and British women yet he had the gall to call him racist. lol. It is all fun to us - this play with words but foreign sensibilities would not be able to understand this culture. Loonie kept dropping the word fagg*t and to the politically correct West, they would think that with the crowd cheering, we are all a bunch of bigots. 😮‍💨🙃🙄 There should be a disclaimer. Though we don't have gay marriage, gays are well regarded in the Philippines and they are openly accepted in our society. Friends would call each other "bakla" or gay and that includes female friends who are not gay. A mainstream favorite rap song called "Sirena" or siren is a reference to a proud gay who was constantly beaten by his father growing up but took care of him in his old age. This might negate my first assertion of how we regard gays because undoubtedly there might still be people out there with such beliefs but trust me when I say that they are outnumbered. And the song sirena is a testament of how men can take pride of being gay in this society. Fliptop is just that to us - play with words but because Filipinos love to fight, the more brutal, the more damaging, the more that it will be appreciated by the crowd. However because we are also innately friendly, the heckling even at the expense of the other mcee, it is regarded as just another competition so the mcees still appreciate each other after battle. It can be brutal and foreigners would not have a stomach for it. By FLIPTOP standards, this is not exactly lame - just regular. The rappers would also trash talk other Filipino sub-cultures like if someone from Manila will make fun of someone from Pampangga or Visayas and the customs there. And though it indeed sounds racist, we don't take it as such. We recognize the difference between real racism and FLIPTOP as a music culture that emerged. Btw, we also have gay linggo because apparently, other than Filipino, English and 100 plus other local dialects, we still need another. lol. Some words from the gay linggo may not be used formally but are actually used for daily inter action. Sorry for this long comment as I can see the reactor does not know what to make of it. He is caught between laughing and shaking his head in disapproval.lol . I am not apologizing in behalf of the Filipinos and the FLIPTOP community just because political correctness is kinda non-existent in my country. It is not for the faint of heart but it is what it is. . .and I am one of those who love it. It is like an evolution of balagtasan (exchange of differing educated ideas and opinions delivered poetically) and music cross-over with definite hip hop influence.
